Following an intense period in French Guiana, with the required 2-week quarantine period due to the COVID-19 preceding another 2-weeks of operations at the Guiana Space Centre (CSG) in Kourou, we are very pleased to have concluded our launch preparatory activities. and to be Ready for Launch!

While the 2-week quarantine period was a period of relatively low activity, since we were not able or allowed to move around apart from the limited access to the hotel premises, activities ramped up quickly once we 'got out'. We were eager to get our access badges to enter the base and check on our hardware that had been waiting there for well over 2 months for our return. We did stop to take a memorable picture at the entrance still.



We performed initial hardware checks and supported our colleagues at Spaceflight with the activities required to take out their customer's satellites from one of the deployers for charging – and safely put them back in afterwards of course.

We then prepared for the final interface testing with the sequencers we have specifically developed for this flight for AVIO and Arianespace under the guidance of ESA. These two sequencers, mounted safely on the inside of the HEX integration module developed by SAB Aerospace, are responsible for the deployment command and telemetry feedback for all the deployers mounted on the HEX. These not only include our own QuadPack and ISIPOD deployers, but also the deployers of colleagues in the launch field.

Testing of the functionality and proper sequence execution of those sequencers with the entire upper stage system in the loop is crucial for the full confidence that all deployers separate the CubeSats correctly and at the right time. Following the successful completion of the tests, the sequencers were prepared for flight, including charging, locking and sealing of connectors, and preparing them to be armed for flight by adding the ABF connectors just before launch.



With those tests successfully completed, we had one other important task to complete: the integration of the last satellite to be added to the entire payload stack – DIDO-3. As this satellite, built by our colleagues at ISISPACE with a payload from Spacepharma, contains temperature-sensitive microgravity experiments, we had kept it at cool temperatures inside its insulated case all this time in our hotel room, and only transported it to the cleanroom facilities on the day of integration, which was coordinated with Arianespace to be as close to encapsulation as possible.

Following final checks and flight preparation of the satellite, which included placing the ABF and simulating deployment after launch to verify the satellite would power on and start booting up as planned, the satellite was integrated into the last remaining QuadPack deployer slot. We then set the QuadPack door to be ready for flight, torqued and locked everything, and removed all the RBF labelling from all our deployers. It was close to 02:00 am when we finished, being the last ones in the cleanroom that day, with encapsulation waiting to start only a short night away!

That was it then. A whole month on campaign. All done. At least for the part of our activities at CSG. For the delicate final task of installing the ABF connectors for the sequencers shortly before launch through the access hatch of the fairing once the upper composite was installed on the launch vehicle, we had instructed and trained AVIO specialists.

With all the hardware flight prepared, including 2 sequencers, 6 QuadPacks, 2 ISIPODs, and 21 satellites we have integrated for this launch, of which 3 completely built and to be supported for operations by our colleagues at ISISPACE, we are now officially Ready for Launch!

We would like to thank AVIO, Arianespace and ESA for the fruitful cooperation and support on this launch campaign, and of course all our customers for their business and trust in our services. Despite the current global situation fighting a pandemic, we didn't give up and managed to continue our activities and get ready for launch together! All the best for launch.

Vega Flight VV16 – the SSMS Proof of Concept mission: Postponed until August 17, 2020

Due to the persistence of exceptionally unfavorable winds at altitude over the Guiana Space Center, Vega Flight VV16 – originally scheduled for June 18, 2020 – was repeatedly postponed, despite full availability the launcher and the 53 satellites on this Small Spacecraft Mission Service (SSMS) mission.

With no improvement in the weather situation expected during the short term, Arianespace has decided to postpone Flight VV16 until August 17, 2020, when the forecast is expected to be more favorable based on modeling of the winds. The interim period will be used to recharge batteries of the launcher and the satellites, under all the required safety conditions.

Despite this delay, Arianespace is maintaining the target of performing three Vega launches during 2020.

Arianespace's next confirmed launch is Flight VA253, planned for July 28. This Ariane 5 mission to geostationary transfer orbit will be performed on behalf of the following customers: Intelsat (with the Galaxy 30 and MEV-2 payloads), and B-SAT (with BSAT-4b).

In the exceptional context of the COVID-19 crisis, Arianespace was prepared to launch the Flight VV16 mission as soon as possible after the interruption of launch campaigns at the Guiana Space Center, which was caused by the epidemic. The mobilization of Arianespace and its partners, in particular Avio (industrial prime contractor for the Vega launcher), the French CNES space agency and the European Space Agency, made it possible to envisage this launch as of June 18, 2020. Unfortunately, due to exceptionally unfavorable winds at altitude for this time of year, the launch was rescheduled several times through Sunday, June 28.

Without a foreseeable improvement in the meteorological situation to allow an authorization of the northward launch toward polar orbit in accordance with range safety rules, Arianespace decided to reschedule the next SSMS mission launch attempt for August 17. At this date, the wind forecasts – based on models observed during several years – are more favorable.

The time that is now available will be used to restore the readiness of the launcher and the SSMS mission's 53 satellites in the context of operations carried out with batteries on the launcher in the Vega Launch Zone; and with batteries on the satellites, conducted in the launch site's payload preparation facilities.

The launch planning for Ariane 5's Flight VA253 – to be performed for operators Intelsat and B-SAT – was confirmed on July 28. The two Intelsat satellites arrived at the Spaceport in French Guiana on Saturday, June 27. Arrival of the BSAT-4b satellite is expected on July 1st. The availability of this launch – with its eastward trajectory towards geostationary orbit – is not affected by the high-altitude winds currently observed above the Guiana Space Center in relation to the range safety rules. Therefore, a sustained level of activity continues at the Spaceport despite the health crisis that is particularly affecting French Guiana and the American continent.

"In the context of the COVID-19 crisis, which was as exceptional as it was difficult, Arianespace and its partners – especially Avio, ESA and CNES – mobilized in an absolutely remarkable way in seizing every opportunity to launch the Flight VV16 mission," confirmed Stéphane Israël, Arianespace's Chief Executive Officer. "This mobilization made it possible to carry out the Vega campaign from end to end, and to ensure the availability of both the launcher and the SSMS mission's 53 satellites.

Unfortunately, the persistence of exceptionally unfavorable winds at altitude in relation to the safety rules forces us to reposition this mission to August 17. We understand the impatience of our 21 customers, and we share it; we will now devote all our energy to ensuring the success of the 16th Vega flight for this emblematic mission as quickly as possible."

Flight VV16 is the first European rideshare mission in the framework of the Small Spacecraft Mission Service. Proposed as part of Arianespace's launch catalog offerings, SSMS is a European project.

With funding from ESA, the SSMS dispenser structure (on which the satellite payloads are integrated) was developed by Colleferro, Italy-based Avio – which also is the Vega launcher's industrial prime contractor. The structure was manufactured by the Czech company, SAB Aerospace. The European Union also contributed to the funding of the Flight VV16 demonstration mission.

The Vega launcher remains available for launch at any time when the required safety conditions are met.

Despite the delay in Vega Flight VV16, Arianespace continues to maintain its target of three Vega launches in 2020.

Colleferro (Rome), 1st July 2020 – Vega VV16 flight operations have been interrupted by Arianespace due to the presence of exceptionally unfavorable high altitude easterly winds. The Vega launcher has been available and flightworthy since June 18 on the launchpad but did not receive a green light from the safety authority since then. Two launch chronology attempts were made during the past week but unfortunately interrupted shortly before lift-off due to conditions exceeding the allowable limits.

It is important to note that 2020 presents exceptionally high altitude easterly winds compared to the statistical average, which has traditionally allowed Vega flights with northern trajectories to take place during this part of the year (when typically easterly winds are present). The high altitude winds do not pose any issue during a nominal launcher flight but may cause, although with an extremely low probability, the falling of debris over populated areas in case of a flight anomaly. For this reason, safety requirements restrict launch authorization in case wind exceeds certain limits.

Arianespace has announced that launch operations will be resumed by August 18, when easterly winds are expected to be less severe. Meanwhile, operations will be conducted to re-charge launcher and satellite batteries. In parallel, Avio will take the opportunity to conduct certain additional launch pad activities in preparation of Vega C maiden flight that were formerly planned by year end that will now be anticipated in July.

On July 28, however, the next Ariane 5 launch, for which Avio produces the two lateral solid-propellant boosters and the liquid-oxygen turbopumps, remains confirmed because its trajectory is not impacted by the winds that instead made it necessary to postpone the flight of Vega.

Giulio Ranzo, CEO of Avio, has declared "Safety requirements are of the utmost importance and we are therefore tasked by the safety authority to comply rigorously in the interest of all parties. Avio will do its best to optimize the use of time and resources in the interest of its customers and stakeholders, minimizing any inconvenience to the maximum extent possible. As in the past, the Avio team has demonstrated to be reactive and resilient in dealing with unexpected events and will continue like this, with a view, shared with Arianespace, to deliver three launches in 2020".
