T+plus 15 minutes, 30 seconds. The AVUM fourth stage has ended the first of four engine burns required on tonight's mission. A second AVUM firing is scheduled for 10:29 p.m. EDT (0229 GMT) to set the stage for deployment of the first seven satellites.

The rocket is now passing in range of a ground station in Saint-Hubert, Quebec.

Liftoff of Arianespace's rideshare mission with Vega for small satellites

The light-lift Vega launcher has lifted off from the Spaceport in French Guiana on its Proof of Concept fight for Arianespace's Small Spacecraft Mission Service (SSMS), which opens new launch services opportunities for the rapidly growing small satellites market.

Departing the Spaceport's Vega Launch Complex at the 10:51:10 p.m. precise moment of liftoff (local time in French Guiana), Vega will deploy its 53 satellite passengers during a flight lasting 1 hr. and 44 min. – involving a sequence of seven payload deployments from the SSMS dispenser.

Designated Flight VV16 in Arianespace's launcher family numbering system, this mission to Sun-synchronous orbit is carrying 46 small CubeSats and seven microsatellites from 21 customers in 13 countries. Once deployed, the spacecraft will serve various applications – including Earth observation, telecommunications, science, technology and education.

• ESAIL, a maritime monitoring satellite for ESA and exactEarth

• ÑuSat 6, an Earth-imaging microsatellite for the Argentine company Satellogic

• D-Orbit's ION CubeSat Carrier, with 12 Planet nanosats inside

The Vega rocket's AVUM upper stage has completed a brief burn that was programmed to last about seven seconds. This maneuver begins the process of climbing into a slightly higher orbit to release 46 smaller nanosatellites.

Another AVUM burn is timed for 11:32 p.m. EDT (0332 GMT), setting the stage for separation of the 46 small payloads.
