Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-F10) will launch Geo Imaging Satellite (GISAT-1) from the Second Launch Pad of Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR, Sriharikota.

Weighing about 2268 kg, GISAT-1 is the first state-of-the-art agile Earth observation satellite which will be placed in a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit by GSLV-F10. Subsequently, the satellite will reach the final geostationary orbit using its onboard propulsion system.

Chennai, Sep 17 (IANS) India has four fully built satellites ready for launch and shipment to the rocket port out of the 12 that were built during 2019-2020, said a senior official of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

Kunhikrihnan said out of the four satellites, GISAT-1 is ready for launch at the rocket port in Sriharikota.

The other three satellites – Microsat-2A, GSAT-12R and, RISAT-2BR2- are ready for shipment to the rocket port.

The launch of GISAT-1 satellite slated for March 5, 2020 was postponed due to technical reasons a day before the launch.

According to him, the challenge in making satellites is that all are different and not uniform.

Further unlike a rocket which has to perform its task of putting a satellite into orbit in about 20 minutes, a satellite has to work in a harsh environment for about 20 years.

India currently has 49 satellites in Earth's orbit and four more are ready for launch this year, said Dr P Kunhikrishnan, Director of ISRO's Bengaluru-based UR Rao Satellite Centre.

According to the official, GISAT-1, Microsat 2-A, GSAT-12R and RISAT-2BR2 are ready for shipment, which means they are ready to be sent to the spaceport in Sriharikota for launch.

In the year 2019-20, ISRO built 12 satellites, of which eight have been launched and four are ready for launch. It is notable that ISRO hasn't had any launches this year, owing to the pandemic and related challenges.

Somnath, director, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, said that two rockets were already at the space port in Sriharikota, waiting to take off since March, but with lockdowns and restricted movement, it has been impossible to do anything. One of these is the first Geo-imaging satellite (GISAT 1), which was to be launched upon a GSLV rocket. The other is a PSLV.

The GISAT is the first of the earth observation geostationary satellites. So far, India has only had polar satellites for earth observation. It is meant for continuous, real time observations, and has applications for weather forecasts, disaster management, as well as military uses. The launch, scheduled for March 5, was called off mysteriously a day before, with ISRO citing technical reasons, and not specifying anything else. The secrecy over the cancellation led to a number of conspiracy theories.

"The technical issues are resolved," Singh said. "We are just waiting for travel to become easier." Almost all of ISRO's centres are involved in a launch, and it takes a minimum of a month's work at the spaceport to "integrate" a rocket for take off—stacking the satellite, evaluating, testing and then when the countdown starts, fuelling.

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has said that it plans to launch another observation satellite – GISAT-1 – on March 28. This comes after the organization successful launched PSLV-C51 carrying Amazonia-1. According to the reports, the GISAT-1 is expected to provide near real-time images of India's borders and also enable quick monitoring of natural disaster. "We are looking to launch this Geo imaging satellite on March 28, subject to weather conditions", an official of the Bengaluru-headquartered Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) told PTI on Sunday.
The satellite will be skyrocketed onboard the GSLV-F10 rocket from the Sriharikota spaceport in Andhra Pradesh's Nellore district, about 100 km north of Chennai. The rocket will place the spacecraft in a geosynchronous orbit. It will be subsequently positioned in geostationary orbit, about 36,000 km above the earth's equator, using its onboard propulsion system.
The launch was earlier planned for March 5 but had to be postponed at the last minute due to technical reasons. "It's going to be a game-changer in some sense for India", a Department of Space official said.
"We are looking to launch this Geo imaging satellite on March 28, subject to weather conditions", an official of the Bengaluru-headquartered Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) told PTI on Sunday.

EOS-03, also named GEO Imaging Satellite or GISAT is a planned Indian geo-imaging satellite for providing images quickly during disasters. GISATs will image in multi-spectral and hyper-spectral bands to provide near real-time pictures of large areas of the country, under cloud-free conditions, at frequent intervals which is, selected field image in every 5 minutes and entire Indian landmass image every 30 minutes at 42 m spatial resolution.
