Delta IV Heavy Countdown Begins!

From the Delta Operations Center at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, this is Delta Launch Control at T-minus 8 hours and counting.

We have just started the countdown to launch the Delta IV Heavy rocket on the NROL-44 mission for the National Reconnaissance Office today.

The countdown began from the T-minus 8 hour mark at 9:45 a.m. Two pre-planned, 15-minute built-in holds are scheduled in the count. One pause is reserved prior to fueling at T-minus 4 hours, 15 minutes, the other occurs prior to the terminal count at T-minus 4 minutes.

Launch is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. EST (2315 UTC) from Space Launch Complex-37.

This will be ULA's 142nd mission, our 89th for U.S. national security and 30th for the NRO. The Delta IV Heavy is making is 12th flight overall and its 8th launch performed the NRO.

Launch Weather is 90% GO

The updated launch forecast from the Space Force's 45th Weather Squadron here at Cape Canaveral continues to indicate a 90 percent chance of acceptable conditions this evening. The only issue could be cumulus clouds, but that is only a slight concern.

For launch at 6:15 p.m. EST (2315 UTC), meteorologists are predicting a few low clouds and scattered high cirrus, good visibility, variable light winds of 3 to 5 knots and a temperature near 60 degrees F.

There is a zero percent chance for lightning or rainfall at the Cape this evening.

The Mobile Service Tower drive motors are being powered up.

Also, the tie-down clamps at the base of the Mobile Service Tower have been opened so technicians could proceed to hydraulically raise the gantry for the rollback. These large claw-like devices secure the MST to anchor points on the pad surface.

MST Roll is Underway

This is Delta Launch Control. Retraction of the Mobile Service Tower is in progress at Space Launch Complex-37.

First motion occurred at 10:32 a.m. EST (1532 UTC).

An undercarriage transport system with drive trucks in all four corners of the MST is moving the 33-story building at a top speed of 0.25 miles per hour.

The Delta IV rocket has been powered up for the NROL-44 launch.

The flight control operator in the Launch Control Center performed the power up. Soon, he will begin avionics testing while the rocket's Inertial Guidance and Control Assembly (INCA) flight computer is allowed to warm up. Later, the operator will conduce guidance system testing and steering checks of the engine nozzles prior to cryogenic fueling.

The Mobile Service Tower is a critical part of Space Launch Complex-37, providing the primary access and weather protection during a rocket's stay on the launch pad, and its overhead crane system serves a vital role in vertical integration of payloads onto the Delta IV Heavy.

Rollback of the MST signals a major milestone at the start of launch day operations. Configuring launch pad systems and securing equipment will be completed over the next couple of hours before all personnel clear the site for fueling.

A check on Mobile Service Tower rollback, the gantry move is nearing completion about the length of a football field away from the rocket for today's scheduled launch.

The gantry stands 330 feet tall, weighs nearly 10 million pounds and is the integral element that enables vertical integration of payloads atop the Delta IV Heavy.

The flight control operational test for the Delta IV Heavy is beginning. This test is known as flight slews, which performs gimbal checks of the rocket's engine nozzles in a state prior to cryogenic fueling. A similar test will be conducted after the rocket is loaded with super-cold propellant.
