GomX-4 CubeSat commissioning

European Space Agency, ESA

ESA's latest mission has completed its in-orbit commissioning. The cereal-box-sized GomX-4B performed a transfer of data across hundreds of kilometres of space from its Danish twin.

Both of the nanosatellites were built by GomSpace in Denmark. GomX-4A, financed by the Danish Ministry of Defence, is focused on monitoring and imaging Denmark's Arctic territory. The ESA-backed GomX-4B is testing a micro-propulsion system as well as an inter-satellite radio link with its counterpart. It also carries other technology payloads, including a hyperspectral imager.

CubeSats are small satellites based around standard 10cm cubic units, but these two 'six-unit' CubeSats still required weeks of in-orbit testing once they reached space, just like full-sized missions.

GomSpace showed the satellites in action for the first time during a live press conference from their Aalborg headquarters on 12 April 2018. The retrieval process from GomX-4A to GomX-4B – and vice versa – down to Earth went according to schedule, confirming the satellite pair can share both data and images and send them home.

A GomSpace GomX-4 cubesat measuring 30x20x10 centimeters

The host satellite, built by Danish cubesat specialist GomSpace, is a so-called 6U cubesat measuring 20x30x10 centimeters and weighing roughly eight kilograms. In addition to HyperScout, the European Space Agency-sponsored GomX-4B satellite also carries a miniaturized startracker for Innovative Solutions in Space, aircraft- and ship-tracking antennas developed by GomSpace and an ESA radiation hardening experiment.

The GomX-4B was launched with GomX-4A, a structural twin built under separate contract for the Danish Ministry of Defence, on a Chinese Chang Zheng-2D rocket Feb. 2 from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in China.

The 70-meter resolution images released April 19 were taken at pre-scheduled times, according to Cosine, resulting in two random locations being imaged: Scotland and Cuba.

Marco Beijersbergen, founder and managing director of Cosine, said in a press release accompanying the images that they are the first spectral images captured by a miniaturized hyperspectral camera aboard a such a small satellite.

Cosine said it will continue to calibrate the camera by imaging deserts and other landmarks with known hyperspectral characteristics and upload application software to demonstrate the camera's flexibility and utility.

China's first electromagnetic satellite bears fruitful results
Source: Xinhua | 2019-11-30 21:49:32 | Editor: mingmei

BEIJING, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- China's first seismo-electromagnetic satellite Zhangheng 1 has obtained fruitful electromagnetic data, according to the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC).

The satellite has enabled China to obtain a global geomagnetic map and an ionospheric map with its own intellectual property rights.

It has obtained information about global ground artificial sources, magnetic storms and signals of earthquakes above 7 magnitude. It also helps with understanding the coupling mechanisms of the lithosphere, atmosphere and ionosphere.

Shen Xuhui, the chief scientist of the satellite, said China is expected to have three electromagnetic satellites in orbit by 2022, offering support for earthquake forecasting as well as space weather monitoring and warning.

Developed by DFH Satellite Co., Ltd. under the CASC, the satellite Zhangheng 1 was launched on Feb. 2, 2018.

The satellite was named after Zhang Heng, a renowned scholar of the East Han Dynasty (25-220), who pioneered earthquake studies by inventing the first-ever seismoscope in the year 132.

Russian.News.Cn
