(Xinhua/Hao Wei)

JIUQUAN, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- China successfully sent six atmospheric environment research satellites and a test communication satellite into orbit Saturday.

They were launched by a Long March-2D rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China at 4:00 p.m.

The six Yunhai-2 satellites will be used to study atmospheric environment, monitor space environment, prevent and reduce disasters and conduct scientific experiments.

The test satellite, the first for the constellation Hongyan, meaning "swan goose" in Chinese, will be used to verify the function of mobile communications in low earth orbit (LEO).

The constellation, designed to comprise hundreds of LEO satellites and a global data processing center, was developed by Aerospace Dongfanghong Development Ltd. Shenzhen, a company under the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST).

After completion, the constellation will provide communication services for intelligent terminals across the world, Internet of Things and mobile broadcast. It can also help enhance navigation, monitor flights and sailing conditions and offer access to broadband Internet.

The constellation can help realize all-time and all-weather communications under any complex terrain conditions, according to CAST.

The upper stage Yuanzheng-3, or Expedition-3, atop the rocket, also contributed to the success of the mission.

Upper stages are independent spacecraft installed on the carrier rocket that are capable of restarting their engines multiple times in space to allow them to send different payloads into varying orbits. They are also referred to as space shuttles.

Saturday's launch was the 297th mission of the Long March rocket series.

China carried out the last global orbital launch of 2018 on Saturday with a Long March 2D sending the Hongyan-1 communications satellite and six smaller passengers into low Earth orbits.

The hypergolic-fuelled launch vehicle lifted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in the Gobi Desert at 08:00 UTC (03:00 Eastern, 16:00 Beijing time) December 21 carrying seven satellites.

The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) declared the mission a success close to four hours later. The announcement came later than usual due to the involvement of a new Yuanzheng-3 upper stage which was used to send the satellites into varying orbits.

The United States' Joint Space Operations Centre, under USSTRATCOM, which detects and identifies artificial objects in Earth orbit, has tracked four spacecraft in roughly 1,100 x 1,090 kilometre altitude orbits, with three more in 525 x 515 km orbits, all with a 50 degree inclination.

The launch was China's 39th of 2018 and the 114th worldwide, with this year being the first since 1990 that global launches surpassed the one hundred mark.

Long March-2D launches Hongyan-1 and six Yunhai-2 satellites.

This first Hongyan satellite will be used to test L- and Ka-band communication capabilities and compatibility in low Earth orbit (LEO), as one of nine satellites orbited by 2020 as a pilot demonstration for the Hongyan ('wild goose' or 'swan goose') mobile communications system, with the name likely coming from the fact that geese were used to deliver messages in ancient times in China.

Joining the Hongyan-1 communications satellite were six Yunhai-2 satellites which will be used to study atmospheric environment, monitor space environment, prevent and reduce disasters and conduct scientific experiments, according to Chinese state media Xinhua.

The Hongyan-1 satellite was developed by the Aerospace Dongfanghong Development Ltd. Shenzhen, a company under the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST), a major spacecraft designer and manufacturer and a subsidiary of CASC.

The first 60 satellites making up the first phase of deployment of the Hongyan constellation are expected to be in orbit and operational by around 2023, with the 300+ satellite system to be completed by 2025.

The system aims, "to provide a global solution for our future satellite broadband access and services such as the Internet of Things with our current telecommunication technology," according to Shi Pingyan, senior vice president of CAST, speaking to CCTV at the Zhuhai airshow in November.

The Hongyan system will provide global internet coverage including to remote places such as deserts, mountains and out at sea.

The launch follows the December 21 launch of the first satellite for the Hongyun constellation—whose name, while having an apparent similarity to Hongyan, means 'rainbow cloud'—for a sister state-owned entity to CASC, the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corpopration (CASIC), the country's largest missile maker.

New upper stage

The Saturday mission saw the debut of the Yuanzheng-3 (YZ-3) upper stage, designed for for the Long March 2D and Long March 4B launch vehicles.

The upper stage is capable of up to 20 engine restarts and 10 spacecraft separation events, allowing a single launch to send different payloads to varying orbits, and can operate in orbit for up to 48 hours.
