The SpaceX Crew Dragon's hatch is closed and the stage is set for the Commercial Crew Program's first undocking and return to Earth Friday. As NASA and SpaceX get ready for Friday's splashdown, the Expedition 58 crew continued exploring a variety of space physics phenomena aboard the International Space Station.

The uncrewed SpaceX DM-1 mission has one final milestone and that is the safe return to Earth with a splashdown in the Atlantic Ocean around 8:45 a.m. EST Friday. The Crew Dragon will undock Friday at 2:31 a.m. from the Harmony module's international docking adapter. NASA TV will broadcast the departure and return activities live.

The first commercial crew vehicle from SpaceX will be bringing back over 330 pounds of science gear, crew supplies and station hardware. It delivered almost 450 pounds of materials to resupply the station crew on March 3.

Science took precedence as usual aboard the orbital lab today as SpaceX prepares to welcome its Crew Dragon back on Earth.

At 12:39 p.m. ET, the Expedition 58 crew aboard the International Space Station closed the hatch between the SpaceX Crew Dragon and the orbital laboratory.

NASA astronaut Anne McClain, David Saint-Jacques of the Canadian Space Agency, and Russian cosmonaut and Expedition 58 commander Oleg Kononenko, gathered briefly inside the Crew Dragon to pose for a round of photos before exiting the spacecraft.

"Dragon hatch closed, 17:39 GMT," Saint-Jacques reported to the team in the space station flight control room at the agency's Johnson Space Center in Houston, giving the time in Greenwich Mean Time.

The Crew Dragon's splashdown in the Atlantic Ocean will complete its five-day uncrewed Demo-1 mission dedicated to testing the company's end-to-end system designed to return human launches to the International Space Station from the United States as part of NASA's Commercial Crew Program. On board for the spacecraft's return is a lifelike, anthropomorphic test device named Ripley, outfitted with sensors to provide data about potential effects on humans traveling in Crew Dragon for critical phases like ascent, entry and landing.

Coverage of the Crew Dragon undocking will begin on NASA Television and the agency's website at 2 a.m. Friday, March 8, with physical separation of the spacecraft expected at about 2:31 a.m.

Live coverage from SpaceX mission control in Hawthorne and NASA mission control at Johnson Space Center in Houston will resume at 7:30 a.m. for the spacecraft's deorbit burn scheduled at 7:50 a.m. and continue through Crew Dragon's anticipated splashdown in the Atlantic Ocean at 8:45 a.m.

ВАШИНГТОН, 7 мар – РИА Новости. Экипаж Международной космической станции (МКС) задраил люк новейшего американского космического корабля Dragon-2, чтобы он вернулся на Землю, сообщило НАСА в четверг.

Корабль до этого прошел первый испытательный полет в беспилотном режиме.

Ведомство на своем сайте ведет прямую трансляцию закрытие люка космического корабля. Его провел канадский астронавт Давид Сен-Жак, которому помогал российский космонавт Олег Кононенко. В НАСА подготовку к отбытию корабля со станции называют "началом конца" его первого испытательного полета.

Если все пройдет штатно, Dragon-2 отстыкуется от МКС в 10.31 мск в пятницу. По графику НАСА и SpaceX, корабль должен сойти с орбиты и затем приводниться в Атлантическом океане ориентировочно в 15.45 мск в пятницу.

Аппарат возвращает на землю около 136 килограммов груза, в том числе результаты научных экспериментов, проведенных на орбите. В корабле также вернется на Землю манекен Рипли, названный в честь героини фильмов "Чужие".

Dragon-2 прибыл на МКС 3 марта после успешного старта с космодрома на мысе Канаверал (Флорида). Это первое испытание США новейшего пилотируемого корабля в рамках программы пилотируемых полетов, прерванной в 2011 году после завершения полетов кораблей "Шаттл".
