The first official weather forecast for Thursday's scheduled Falcon 9 launch from the Kennedy Space Center's pad 39A projects a 60 percent chance of conditions favorable for liftoff.

The main weather concerns are potential violations of the thick cloud and cumulus cloud rules as a cold front pushes through Central Florida.

"By Thursday, the strong high pressure push behind the front will bring cooler, drier air into Florida, moving through the spaceport Thursday morning," the U.S. Air Force's 45th Weather Squadron wrote in a forecast today. "Cloudiness and rain will diminish through the day as the boundary pushes south of the area. The primary weather concerns are lingering thick cloud layers and cumulus clouds associated with the front. Maximum upper-level winds will be from the southwest at 90 knots at 40,000 feet."

The Falcon 9's launch window opens at 3:46 p.m. EST (2046 GMT) and extends to 5:29 p.m. EST (2229 GMT).

During the launch window Thursday, forecasters predict isolated rain showers and mostly cloudy skies with scattered clouds at 2,500 feet and broken decks at 14,000 feet and 25,000 feet.

Winds will be from the west-northwest at 12 to 17 mph, and the temperature will be around 77 degrees Fahrenheit.

If the launch is delayed to Friday, conditions should improve, with a 90 percent probability of acceptable weather, the chief concern being gusty ground winds.
