Компания Eutelsat обнародовала данные о планах купить еще два космических аппарата серии Quantum. Первый аппарат серии был куплен оператором у Airbus в 2015 году за $198 млн. (запуск КА должен состояться в 2019 году) При этом, к настоящему времени компания уже успела предпродать порядка 50 процентов от емкости нового спутника (данные примерно годовой давности).
К особенностям серии Quantum производитель относит:
1. Возможность полной перенастройки спутника путем изменения его программного обеспечения.
2. Использование фазированной антенны, которая позволит адаптировать спутник под требования рынка (поставщик компонентов компания Anaren). При этом, согласно заявлению Airbus использование данной технологии позволит создавать спутники без заранее определенной зоны покрытия.
3. Емкость КА должна будет составить восемь одно гигагерцовых луча на передачу данных. При этом, каждый луч будет способен изменять свою зону покрытия от одной трети Земли до 600 км.
4. Потребители аппарата будут иметь возможность разделять лучи на составляющие, которые будут способны следовать за передвигающимся объектом.   
5. Текущее поколение аппаратов Quantum будет работать в Ku диапазоне, однако в дальнейшем будут созданы и Ка диапазонные аппараты.
6. Технологически спутник унаследовал многие свои свойства от военных КА геостационарной связи.
7. За счет использования фазированной антенны спутники Quantum будут способны определять источники радиопомех с точностью до 20 км. При этом, КА будет способен либо ограничивать вещание на регион с радиопомехами либо менять частоту передачи данных.

Традиционно конфигурацию спутника задают еще на Земле. На орбите он выполняет только ту работу, которой его научили перед запуском. Британская компания Eutelsat хочет изменить подход, пишет Futurism.
Уже в 2019 году компания хочет запустить спутник Eutelsat Quantum. В отличие от аналогов, он меняет свою конфигурацию прямо на орбите. Там он может изменить частоту излучаемого сигнала или, например, перенацелиться на другие области на поверхности Земли, за которыми спутник ведет наблюдение. Все это оператор сможет делать из центра управления, в реальном времени.
В компании говорят, что уровень гибкости и изменяемости параметров спутника — это прорыв. До этого не было технологий, которые бы позволяли настраивать спутник по стольким же параметрам прямо в космосе. Спутник рассчитан на 15 лет непрерывного использования. Любой другой за это время устарел бы, говорят создатели, но не их аппарат.

Eutelsat Quantum
Eutelsat Quantum is an experimental communications satellite with a software reconfigurable payload It is developed jointly by ESA, Eutelsat and Airbus Defence and Space.
The Quantum programme is a departure from the traditional, custom, one-off approach to building satellites by offering a new and generic payload design. For the first time, it will enable users to request the performance and flexibility they need in terms of coverage, bandwidth, power and frequency.
The satellites developed under the Quantum umbrella will be cheaper and quicker to build compared to current methods by using generic subsystems and equipment, enabling larger-scale production and more efficient control of stock.
Quantum will also be able to completely transform in orbit. Once in space, the chameleon-like satellite can adapt to new commands in coverage, frequency band, power use and even change its orbital position. This will make it the first generation of universal satellites able to serve any region of the world and adjust to new business without the user needing to buy and launch an entirely new satellite.

Star One ordered the new Star One D2 communications satellite from SS/Loral in October 2017.
Star One D2 is equipped with C-, Ku-, Ka- and X-band payloads for high-speed telecommunications, television broadcast and fast broadband in South America, Mexico, Central America, and parts of the Atlantic Ocean. It is designed to provide service for 15 years or longer and is based on the highly reliable SSL 1300 platform, which has the capability to support a broad range of applications and technology advances.
Star One D2 is based on the SSL-1300 satellite platform. The satellite is designed to deliver service for 15 years or more.

Computers are now in control of this automated final phase of the launch countdown to prepare the rocket and ground systems for liftoff. There are three computers running the countdown - one aboard the Ariane 5 and two redundant computers at the launch complex.

The launch time is set for 2100:00 GMT (5:00:00 p.m. EDT; 6:00:00 p.m. French Guiana time). Liftoff actually occurs even seconds later with ignition of the solid rocket boosters.

       Париж. 31 июля. ИНТЕРФАКС - Тяжелая ракета-носитель Ariane 5 стартовала на геостационарную переходную орбиту с европейским спутником Eutelsat Quantum и бразильским спутниками Star One D2, сообщила французская компания-оператор Arianespace.
       Запуск был осуществлен с космодрома Куру во Французской Гвиане в пятницу в 23:00 по парижскому времени (в субботу в 00:00 мск).
       Примерно через 36,5 минут два космических аппарата после отделения от второй ступени ракеты должны быть выведены на орбиту.
       Eutelsat Quantum является первым в мире перепрограммируемым коммерческим спутником. Его универсальность выводит на качественно новый уровень функциональность спутников связи, которые теперь смогут приспосабливаться к задачам операторов с помощью программного управления, когда это требуется.
       Его приемная антенна работает с электронным управлением в Ku-диапазоне с восемью независимыми реконфигурируемыми лучами. Это позволяет оператору перенастраивать радиочастотные лучи в зоне покрытия, обеспечивая беспрецедентную гибкость в работе мультимедийных и радиовещательных служб. Схема применима как к каждому конкретному лучу, так и к нескольким одновременно, и включает до нескольких десятков предварительно запрограммированных конфигураций каждого луча.

       Спутник массой 3,5 тонны разработан совместно Европейским космическим агентством, оператором Eutelsat и компанией Airbus Defence and Space. Предполагаемый срок его эксплуатации - 15 лет.

On Friday, July 30, between 09:00 and 10:30 p.m. UTC, the Ariane 5 VA254 flight successfully placed two satellites in orbit from the Guiana Space Center (CSG): Star One D2, built by Maxar Technologies for Brazilian operator Embratel, and EUTELSAT QUANTUM for Eutelsat, developed with Airbus Defence and Space and the European Space Agency (ESA).

Star One D2 is a high-capacity, multi-mission satellite with Ku-, Ka-, C- and X-band transponders, that will enable it to expand broadband coverage to new regions in Central and South America and add an updated X-band payload for government use over the Atlantic region. Built on Maxar's proven 1300-class platform at the company's Palo Alto, California, manufacturing facility, Star One D2 will improve access to high-quality services, serving the parabolic fleet in Brazil, Pay TV, cell phone backhaul, data, video and Internet for corporate customers and government agencies.

The EUTELSAT QUANTUM satellite was developed in the framework of a public-private partnership between the European Space Agency (ESA), the operator Eutelsat and Airbus Defence and Space. With its configurable software-based design, EUTELSAT QUANTUM will be the first universal satellite in the world that can be repeatedly adjusted to the customer's requirements at any time. It is equipped with electronically steerable receiving antennae and operates in Ku-band with eight independent reconfigurable beams. This configuration allows the operator to reconfigure in-orbit the radio-frequency beams over the coverage zones, providing unprecedented flexibility in data, government and mobility services.

The relationship between Arianespace and both Embratel and Eutelsat goes back more than three decades and has only become stronger over time. Since 1985, the year of its first mission for Embratel, Arianespace has launched the Brazilian operator's entire fleet of 12 satellites. In addition, global operator Eutelsat has entrusted the launch of 36 satellites to Arianespace since 1983.

For this flight, the performance required of the Ariane 5 was 10,515 kg, including 9,651 kg for both payloads. Ariane 5 was also equipped with a cryogenic upper stage called ESC-D, whose tanks were extended for this mission, with an overall mass of the stage at liftoff of more than 19 metric tons.
