Ariane 5 lifts off from French Guiana with four Galileo spacecraft

Arianespace's Ariane 5 launcher has begun its latest mission from the Spaceport, carrying four satellites for Europe's Galileo navigation system.

Lifting off at exactly 3:36:07 p.m. local time in French Guiana, the heavy-lift vehicle is to deploy its passengers on a flight lasting approximately 3 hrs., 55 min.

Payload lift performance for today's mission – which is designated Flight VA240 in Arianespace's launcher family numbering system – is estimated at 3,282 kg.

The Ariane 5's second stage is now in communications range of a ground station at New Norcia, Western Australia. The upper stage is in a "barbecue roll" to keep its temperature steady as it climbs higher above Earth, heading for an altitude of more than 14,000 miles.

Meanwhile, the Ariane 5 ES Upper Stage is enjoying a BBQ roll with its four passengers. (To new people, that's real. They rotate the spacecraft to aid thermal conditioning - i.e. how long each side faces the sun).

Another hour until the Arianespace coverage resumes, but Irina, Alexandre, Zofia, and Nicole are already a good distance from the planet.

IGNITION! The EPS upper stage fired up its 2,800kgf Aestus engine on a burn of six minutes and 18 seconds to boost #Galileo FM 15-18 into an orbit of 22,922 Kilometers, 57.0°.

The #Galileo satellites are dropped off in an orbit 300 Kilometers below their operational altitude where they will undergo activation and checkouts before phasing into the constellation. This keeps the operational orbit clean in case a satellite can not be activated.
