Now 60 minutes from liftoff. Today marks the 72nd flight for Atlas 5, born of the Air Force's competition to develop next-generation Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicles. In its previous 71 missions since debuting in August 2002, the Atlas 5 has flown 26 flights dedicated to the Defense Department, 17 commercial missions, 14 for NASA and 14 for the National Reconnaissance Office.
"NASA has a terrific record flying on Atlas 5. We've successfully launched 14 missions on this magnificent rocket -- missions to Pluto, Jupiter, the Moon, the Sun, radiation belts, three spacecraft to Mars, Asteroid Bennu, as well as two previous TDRS spacecraft. TDRS-M will be the 15th NASA mission on Atlas 5 and the 72nd Atlas 5 overall," said NASA launch director Tim Dunn.
