Antares/OA8: Looking ahead, a launch Sunday would result in Cygnus reaching the space station around 4:45am EST Tuesday, roughly the same time ULA/NASA plan to launch a Delta 2 rocket from Vandenberg AFB in California to put a new NOAA weather satellite in orbit

November 11, 2017

The launch of Orbital ATK's Antares rocket carrying the company's Cygnus cargo spacecraft had to be scrubbed at the last minute on Saturday due to a rogue aircraft entering the closed airspace around NASA's Wallops Flight Facility. Liftoff has been rescheduled for Sunday with a window opening time of 12:14:52 UTC to get the second Antares 200 series vehicle off the ground and send Cygnus on its way to the International Space Station.

Saturday's launch countdown had been mostly smooth sailing for the Orbital ATK launch team, heading into the Launch Checklist just after midnight local time when temperatures had dipped below freezing. Although on the low end of Antares' launch commit criteria, temperatures were not an issue and the Launch Team was successful in overcoming a range of smaller problems that cropped up over the course of the multi-hour countdown including occasional telemetry drop outs, noisy radio channels and problems with the warm purge flow supplied to the two-stage rocket.

With all issues closed out, Antares entered propellant loading at T-1 hour and 35 minutes to receive some 65 metric tons of Rocket Propellant 1 and 177 tons of Liquid Oxygen, loaded into the first stage of the rocket through interfaces in the launch mount with the solid-fueled second stage not requiring any tanking operations during the countdown.

Antares stood fully fueled when the Launch Team went through the final polls at T-10 minutes followed by the last manual steps to transition Antares to internal power, switch the twin RD-181 engines into high-purge flow and arming all ground and onboard ordnances. Computers assumed control of the countdown at the T-3-minute mark and Antares had begun pressurizing its tanks when the abort call was made by the Wallops range inside 90 seconds fr om the opening of the day's five-minute launch window.

The range had to call the abort due to a commercial aircraft entering the closed airspace around Virginia's Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport.

Notices to Airmen and Mariners were sent out in ample time to notify operators of the planned launch; however, Wallops has been plagued by rogue boats and aircraft in the past since the site is only used infrequently for space launches as opposed to Cape Canaveral and Vandenberg Air Force Base wh ere launches are a common occurrence. Also, Wallops is NASA's only owned and operated range without the benefit of having a nearby Air Force base to help enforce range closures.

Antares has the luxury of a five-minute window as opposed to other launchers like Soyuz and Falcon 9 that only have instantaneous opportunities when aiming for ISS, but the window time was not sufficient for the aircraft to clear the area. As a result, the launch team was forced to safe Antares and back out of the terminal countdown, initiating de-tanking of the first stage and putting in motion a 24-hour turnaround.

Sunday's launch window opens at 12:14:52 UTC, 7:14 a.m. local time with launch moving earlier every day due to the progression of the Space Station's orbital plane.

The cargo of the OA-8 mission is more on the supplies side compared to the recent science-laden Dragon missions that gave the four U.S. Segment crew members plenty of work to manage dozens of experiments riding up and down on Dragon. The majority of cargo on Cygnus is comprised of food provisions and supplies for the crew, consumables and spare part for the Station and some spacewalking gear. This will extend the available supplies until at least June 2018 when food provisions would reach their reserve levels as food is typically the limiting consumable per the Station's supply management plan.

Had it confirmed that Jet Blue is off the hook. I'm told it was a small plane, a few miles offshore, was not answering FAA warnings. Bad pilot.

Managers aborted liftoff of a commercial Antares cargo launcher Saturday when an aircraft strayed into restricted airspace near the rocket's planned flight path east from a launch pad on Virginia's Eastern Shore.
Спойлер
The Antares rocket and a Cygnus supply ship, both owned by Orbital ATK, were ready for liftoff at 7:37 a.m. EST (1237 GMT) Saturday. The launch team loaded kerosene and liquid oxygen propellants into the first stage of the Antares booster, and a computer-controlled countdown sequencer took over for the final three minutes before liftoff.

But an unidentified aircraft ventured into the safety zone surrounding the rocket and its planned trajectory over the Atlantic Ocean.

"LC, LC, we are red," a member of the launch team told Adam Lewis, Orbital ATK's launch conductor. "We have an aircraft in the hazard area."

"Copy that," Lewis replied. "Abort, abort, abort. This is LC on the countdown net. Abort, abort, abort. Proceed to the abort safing checklist."

The Antares rocket had five minutes to take off Saturday and still send the Cygnus supply ship on a path to intercept the International Space Station and deliver 3.7 tons of cargo, provisions and experiments to the lab's six-person crew.

There was no time to wait for the aircraft to clear the the safety box, and managers ordered a scrub.
Another launch attempt is set for 7:14 a.m. EST (1214 GMT) Sunday from pad 0A at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility on Virginia's Eastern Shore.

Despite freezing temperatures in the upper 20s Fahrenheit, weather was not a problem during Saturday's countdown. Mostly clear skies and light winds will continue to be in the forecast Sunday, and there is less than a 5 percent chance weather will violate any of the Antares rocket's constraints.

Orbital ATK's launch team planned to drain propellants from the Antares first stage later Saturday morning, then prepare to return to the launch control center just after midnight Sunday to begin the countdown anew.

Authorities publish notices to pilots and mariners to keep them away from rocket drop zones and safety corridors, but the warnings sometimes go unheeded, prompting launch delays.

The Antares launch operates under a commercial license issued by Federal Aviation Administration, which oversees the flight to ensure public safety.

With Saturday's scrub, the Cygnus supply ship's arrival at the space station will move back one day until Tuesday.

Astronaut Paolo Nespoli will capture the automated cargo craft with the station's robotic arm around 4:45 a.m. EST (0945 GMT) Tuesday, around the same time a United Launch Alliance Delta 2 rocket is set to lift off from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California on an unrelated mission to loft a NOAA weather satellite into orbit.

The Delta 2 launch is set for 4:47 a.m. EST (0947 GMT; 1:47 a.m. PST) Tuesday.

Forecast for Nov. 12: 90 Percent Favorable

Aside from the slight chance of cloud ceilings at 2,000 feet for Sunday morning's launch attempt, conditions look excellent with no real weather concerns at this time. The Wallops range forecast is 90 percent favorable.

Canadian high pressure will ridge over the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states today with dry and unseasonably cold conditions. The area of high pressure will remain over the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states through Sunday morning's launch attempt, before sliding off the coast Sunday afternoon. The low-level stratus cloudiness off the Wallops coastline this morning will remain off the Wallops coastline today. As the area of high pressure begins to slide off the Northeast coastline Sunday morning, there is a slight chance of the low-level stratus moving onshore over the Wallops Region Sunday morning.

The launch of Orbital ATK's Antares rocket carrying the Cygnus cargo spacecraft was scrubbed for Nov. 11 after an aircraft was detected in the vicinity of the launch pad. The next launch attempt is set for Sunday, Nov. 12. The five-minute launch window opens at 7:14 a.m. EST.
