Mission Update: OA-5 Space Station Cargo Resupply

Mission Update - August 10, 2016
Orbital ATK completed a stage test at the end of May and final data review has confirmed the test was successful, clearing the way for the Antares return to flight. Simultaneously, the company has been conducting final integration and check out of the flight vehicle that will launch the OA-5 mission to ensure that all technical, quality and safety standards are met or exceeded.
Due to a variety of interrelated factors, including the company's continuing processing, inspection and testing of the flight vehicle at Wallops Island, and NASA's scheduling of crew activities on the International Space Station in preparation for upcoming cargo and crew launches, Orbital ATK is currently working with NASA to target a window in the second half of September for the launch of the OA-5 mission. A more specific launch date will be identified in the coming weeks.
To date, Orbital ATK has carried out five cargo logistics mission for NASA under the COTS and CRS programs.
About the Mission
For the OA-5 mission, Orbital ATK's Cygnus advanced maneuvering spacecraft will carry approximately 2,400 kg (5,290 lbs.) of supplies and science experiments for the International Space Station (ISS). Under the Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) contract with NASA, Orbital ATK will deliver approximately 28,700 kilograms of cargo to the space station. OA-5 is the sixth of these missions.
Cygnus will be launched into orbit using Orbital ATK's upgraded Antares 230 launch vehicle fr om Virginia Space's Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport Pad 0A on Wallops Island, Virginia at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility. The Antares 230 vehicle features all new RD-181 engines which provide increased performance and flexibility to the Orbital ATK cargo delivery service.
After being launched into low-Earth orbit, the Cygnus spacecraft will use its substantial maneuvering capability to transport the cargo from a low parking orbit to the ISS wh ere it will be grappled by the station's crew using the station's robotic arm and berthed to the station. After the cargo is removed and any disposal items are added, Cygnus will depart from the ISS, and begin secondary payload missions.
For the OA-5 mission, Cygnus will carry the Saffire II payload experiment to study combustion behavior in microgravity. Data from this experiment will be downloaded via telemetry. In addition, a NanoRack deployer will release Spire Cubesats used for weather forecasting. These secondary payload operations will be conducted after Cygnus departs the space station.

About Cygnus
Cargo is delivered to the station using Orbital ATK's Cygnus spacecraft. The Cygnus spacecraft consists of two modules: the Service Module (SM) which incorporates the avionics, propulsion and power systems fr om Orbital ATK's flight proven LEOStar and GEOStar spacecraft buses; and the Pressurized Cargo Module (PCM) which carries the crew supplies, spares and scientific experiments. The SM is integrated and tested at Orbital ATK's Dulles, Virginia satellite manufacturing facility. The PCM is supplied by Thales Alenia Space and is produced in Turin Italy.

Об этом говорится в заявлении подрядчика NASA - компании Orbital ATK, предоставленном корреспонденту ТАСС в пресс-службе космодрома на острове Уоллопс (штат Вирджиния).

"В силу ряда взаимосвязанных факторов, включая продолжающееся обслуживание, осмотр и проверки носителя на острове Уоллопс, а также составленное NASA расписание работы экипажа МКС в рамках подготовки к предстоящим грузовым и пилотируемым запускам, Orbital ATK в настоящее работает с NASA над тем, чтобы наметить "окно" во второй половине сентября для запуска (данной) миссии", - указывается в документе. Точную дату предполагается назвать "в предстоящие недели".

Ранее запуск ракеты-носителя Antares-230 с транспортным грузовым кораблем Cygnus намечался на 22 августа. Как сообщили ТАСС в пресс-службе НПО "Энергомаш", речь идет о первом запуске Antares после аварии 2014 года, а также о первом пуске ракеты-носителя данного типа с двигателями РД-181 российского производства.

В настоящее время Cygnus и Antares находятся на космодроме. Грузовой корабль должен будет доставить экипажу МКС более 2,5 тонны полезных грузов, включая воду, продовольствие и материалы для научных экспериментов. Кроме того, он привезет на станцию оборудование для вывода в космическое пространство миниатюрных спутников, предназначенных для наблюдения за погодой на Земле.

В октябре 2014 года ракета Antares взорвалась вместе с кораблем прямо на космодроме. Пока продолжались доработка и испытания Antares с новой реактивной установкой, Orbital ATK использовала для отправки своего "грузовика" носитель Atlas V консорциума United Launch Alliance, созданного гигантами авиакосмической промышленности США - компаниями Boeing и Lockheed Martin. Контракт Orbital ATK с NASA на общую сумму $1,9 млрд, подписанный три года назад, предусматривает еще три рейса Cygnus к МКС.

NASA Opens Media Accreditation, New Target Dates Set for Orbital ATK Resupply Launch from Virginia


Media accreditation now is open, with new launch dates, for the next NASA-contracted cargo resupply flight launching from Virginia to the International Space Station.

Orbital ATK is targeting no earlier than Oct. 9-13 for the launch of its Cygnus spacecraft on an Antares rocket from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport's Pad-0A at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Wallops Island, Virginia. A more specific date will be identified after completion of final operational milestones and technical reviews. Launch times range from 10:47 p.m. EDT Sunday, Oct. 9 to 9:13 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13.  

International media without U.S. citizenship must have previously applied for credentials to cover the prelaunch and launch activities at Wallops. The application deadline is Friday, Sept. 30 for media who are U.S. citizens. Media should send their accreditation request to Keith Koehler atkeith.a.koehler@nasa.gov. This will be the sixth planned cargo resupply mission by Orbital ATK under NASA's Commercial Resupply Services contract with the company and the fourth launch from Virginia. ВАШИНГТОН, 21 сен — РИА Новости. Старт космического корабля Cygnus с грузом для МКС на оснащенной российским двигателем РД-181 ракете Antares состоится после 9 октября, сообщило НАСА.
"Orbital ATK планирует осуществить запуск космического корабля Cygnus на ракете Antares не раньше 9-13 октября с космодрома Валлопс в Виргинии", — сообщило ведомство. Более точная дата и время запуска будут определены по завершении основных этапов подготовки к старту.
Ранее представитель Orbital ATK говорил, что старт состоится в начале октября.
Первоначально первый старт модернизированной после крушения 2014 года ракеты Antares предполагалось осуществить в июле 2016 года, но сроки запуска были сдвинуты на август, а затем на сентябрь.
Новая модификации ракеты, получившей название Antares 230, начала создаваться после произошедшей в октябре 2014 года аварии, когда Antares, оснащенная в то время двигателем компании "Аэроджет" AJ-26 (модификация российских Н-33), взорвалась во время старта на космодроме на побережье Атлантического океана в штате Вирджиния. Новая Antares оснащена российскими двигателями РД-181.

Откладывавшийся ранее старт ракеты Antares американской компании Orbital ATK с российским двигателем РД-181 назначен на 13 октября, сообщает НАСА.

"НАСА и Orbital ATK успешно завершили достартовую инспекцию готовности к полету и назначили планируемый запуск на 13 октября", — говорится в сообщении американского аэрокосмического агентства.

Запуск назначен на 21:13 по местному времени (4:13 мск 14 октября) со стартовой площадки Среднеатлантического регионального космопорта в штате Виргиния. Ожидается, что запуск можно будет увидеть на большой территории атлантического побережья США.

Integration of the Orbital ATK Antares launch vehicle continues in the NASA Horizontal Integration Facility at the Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia for its flight to the International Space Station.
The Antares OA-5 launch vehicle is seen on the right.  The Cygnus spacecraft is on the left as crews prepare it for mating with the Antares vehicle.  Cygnus will carry approximately 5,100 pounds of cargo, including crew supplies and vehicle hardware, to the orbiting laboratory to support dozens of science and research investigations.
The Antares is schedule to launch at 9:13 p.m. EDT, Thursday, Oct. 13 from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport's pad 0A at Wallops.  Backup launch days run through Oct. 19 but additional days could be added if needed. The launch is expected to be visible from the entire east coast, weather permitting.
Rollout of the vehicle from the integration facility to the launch pad is scheduled for the afternoon of Oct. 11.
