Если он продемонстрирует все, что им требуется, и быстро, не слишком утрудившись, то почему нет? Они просто скажут "Вот по той же ТД, по какой сделали этот, сделаем и остальные". Тогда проблемы белой вороны просто не будет )

Российский двигатель РД-180 планируется заменить на агрегат BE-4, разработанный компанией United Launch Alliance (ULA). Фаличев отметил, что иностранная установка сконструирована более экономично, чем отечественная.

«Есть разные показатели по тяге, в тяге они немножко проигрывают нам, этот двигатель, но в то же время тяга в космосе такая же. По общим показателям этот двигатель ничем не уступает РД-180, позволяет выводить грузы и людей на орбиты. Если наш двигатель, РД-180, стоит 25 миллионов долларов, то двигатель у американцев, он состоит из нескольких маленьких двигателей, но общая стоимость первой ступени двигательной равна 14 миллионам долларов, это в два раза дешевле, чем у нас».

In another example of driving down cost while delivering the launch services our customers expect, ULA is transitioning to a new kind of payload fairing that is more affordable and easier to build. ULA technicians took delivery of the first one recently at Cape Canaveral, Florida.

The Out-of-Autoclave (OoA) fairings will be used on upcoming Atlas V launches to accumulate flight experience before use on Vulcan Centaur, reducing risk for our next-generation rocket. In fact, a significant portion of systems will have flown on Atlas and Delta rockets before its inaugural launch next year.

The first OoA fairing was transported to the launch site by the RocketShip vessel from the RUAG Space USA manufacturing in Decatur, Alabama. It was offloaded from the ship at the Cape Canaveral wharf to begin pre-launch preparations.

RUAG Space formed a strategic partnership with ULA and established production capabilities inside our Decatur plant to make fairings and other composite structures in the U.S. The OoA fairing recently delivered is American-made by RUAG Space USA.

RUAG Space previously manufactured the Atlas V 5.4-meter-diameter payload fairings in Emmen, Switzerland. Those have flown nearly 30 times, all successfully.

The Out-of-Autoclave manufacturing method is an alternative process to cure carbon fiber composites using only an oven. It avoids a high-pressure autoclave that is expensive and restricts the size of pieces that can fit inside.

"Utilizing the OoA manufacturing approach allows for a more efficient production process, lower cost and lower system mass while maintaining the same level of reliability and quality as the heritage in-autoclave composites," said Amanda Bacchetti, ULA's payload accommodations leader for Vulcan Centaur.

The OoA oven allows the payload fairings to be produced in two halves instead of 18 or more smaller sections from the in-autoclave process. That means less opportunities for defects, fewer fasteners and doublers to hold the pieces together and a quicker manufacturing time.

"All that simplification leads to lower costs, higher reliability and less weight, which is an important point in the launch industry," said Robbie Harris, program office manager at RUAG Space USA.

The OoA 5.4-meter fairings for Atlas will continue to be made in different lengths for encapsulating the satellites during ascent through the atmosphere and retain the heritage design that features lower sections, called the base module, that surround the Centaur to share the loads from heavy payloads.

For Vulcan Centaur, however, the fairing will attach to the top of Centaur V and not enclose the upper stage. That will make the production even simpler and more affordable.

"The Vulcan Centaur fairing is a further evolution of the payload fairing design. It will be the same in terms of the Out-of-Autoclave material technology, but RUAG Space and ULA have worked together to eliminate some of the manufacturing steps that need to be taken after the cure," Harris explained.

RUAG Space will also supply Payload Attach Fittings (PAF), Interstage Adapters (ISA), and other composite parts for the Vulcan Centaur rocket using OoA technology.

New graphite epoxy motors will help launch ULA's Vulcan Centaur rocket beginning in 2021

PROMONTORY, Utah - Aug. 13, 2020 - Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) conducted its first ground test of an extended length 63-inch-diameter Graphite Epoxy Motor (GEM 63XL) today in Promontory, Utah. This variation of the company's GEM 63 strap-on booster was developed in partnership with United Launch Alliance (ULA) to provide additional lift capability to the Vulcan Centaur vehicle.


Northrop Grumman conducted the first test of its GEM 63XL rocket motor to serve the United Launch Alliance Vulcan Centaur on August 13 at its Promontory, Utah, facility.

"Our new GEM 63XL motors leverage its flight-proven heritage while utilizing state-of-the-art manufacturing technology to enhance launch vehicle heavy-lift capabilities," said Charlie Precourt, vice president, propulsion systems, Northrop Grumman. "The GEM 63XL increases thrust and performance by 15-20 percent compared to a standard GEM 63."

During today's static test, the motor fired for approximately 90 seconds, producing nearly 449,000 pounds of thrust to qualify the motor's internal insulation, propellant grain, ballistics and nozzle in a cold-conditioned environment. This test demonstrated materials and technologies similar to the GEM 63 rocket motor that qualified for flight in October 2019.

Northrop Grumman has supplied rocket propulsion to ULA and its heritage companies for a variety of launch vehicles since 1964. The GEM family of strap-on motors was developed starting in the early 1980s with the GEM 40 to support the Delta II launch vehicle. The company then followed with the GEM 46 for the Delta II Heavy, and the GEM 60, which flew 86 motors over 26 Delta IV launches before retiring in 2019 with 100 percent success. The first flight of the GEM 63 motors will be on a ULA Atlas V launch vehicle planned for fourth quarter 2020, and GEM 63XL motors will support the Vulcan rocket in 2021.

Yes.  We had sold 8 Vulcans in commercial procurements earlier, and have now sold Vulcan for 60% of the 34+ National Security Space Launches that will occur over the next several years.  So, 28+ Vulcan launches have been sold, so far.

It was a shock to hear of the sudden death of Bernard Kutter, Chief Scientist and Manager of Advanced Programs at the United Launch Alliance, on August 12.  He was 55.

While he worked within the framework of a "traditional" space company, his personal goals were within the vision of New Space.  He had been head of advanced programs for many years and I'd met him at several conferences. He was described as the "father" of the ULA's Vulcan rocket, which incorporates several unconventional features...

I found in my files copies of correspondence between Kutter and myself in 2010 on a draft write-up for this Report on space propellant depots (Vol. 5, No. 6, April 30, 2010).  It was evidently largely based on a panel he was on at the Space Access Conference of that spring. That was the era - which has left 'debris' even to this late date - when it was effectively forbidden by NASA that their people visibly admit that depots were desirable or feasible, at least without prohibitively costly research.  Of course, this was to prevent angering the SLS pork-mafia on the Hill.  In my 2010 story I recounted,

"'Hogwash', said Bernard Kutter during this panel; we don't need new technology for space propellant depots, just some demonstrations...[and] the required tests wouldn't be particularly expensive." Despite the opposition, finally, at the end of 2017, George Sowers, who had had similar titles as Kutter until leaving ULA in March 2017, could tweet, "Bernard Kutter of [ULA]: problems of cryogenic propellant storage and transfer now SOLVED. Enables the cislunar economy..."

При этом во время намеченного на 2021 год первого пуска в космос должен быть выведен лунный посадочный модуль Astrobotic, а во время второго - грузовой корабль  Dream Chaser компании Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC). В этой связи сделанное компанией Sierra Nevada заявление о переносе запуска на 2022 год породил соответствующие сомнения относительно планов ULA по сертификации своей ракеты. В частности многие отмечают, что корабль может быть не готов и к 2022 году, а следовательно компании придется искать альтернативу или выводить массо-габаритный макет. С другой стороны это не означает, что компания не сможет оказывать услуги по запуску военных аппаратов поскольку контрактом предусмотрена альтернатива в виде ракет Atlas-5, пишет Ecoruspace.
