Elon Musk will make global internet satellite network and use it to fund cities on Mars and then he will expand it

Elon Musk plans to launch a network of hundreds of communication satellites to orbit earth. The network would do two things: speed up the general flow of data on the Internet and deliver high-speed, low-cost Internet services to the three billion-plus people who still have poor access to the Web. "Our focus is on creating a global communications system that would be larger than anything that has been talked about to date," Musk told Bloomberg Businessweek ahead of the announcement.

Hundreds of satellites would orbit about 750 miles above earth, much closer than traditional communications satellites in geosynchronous orbit at altitudes of up to 22,000 miles. The lower satellites would make for a speedier Internet service, with less distance for electromagnetic signals to travel. The lag in current satellite systems makes applications such as Skype, online gaming, and other cloud-based services tough to use. Musk's service would, in theory, rival fiber optic cables on land while also making the Internet available to remote and poor regions that don't have access.

According to Musk, SpaceX will focus on making satellites for itself for the time being, rather than competing with its customers, although that may change over time. "I think we would consider building satellites for ourselves and for other people," he says. "We'll start by building ones that address the specific application that we are working on, and then we will be more than happy to sell to other people."

Musk said it will take many, many years to have his Internet service up and running. "People should not expect this to be active sooner than five years," he said. And it'll be expensive: Around $10 billion to build, he says. "But we see it as a long-term revenue source for SpaceX to be able to fund a city on Mars."

Elon says "It will be important for Mars to have a global communications network as well. I think this needs to be done and I don't see anyone else doing it.

Политика и патриотизм как средство конкурентной борьбы:

I mean, Boeing and Lockheed make decent rockets but three times more is really crazy, and then the main engine is Russian and the engine maker is majority owned by the Kremlin, directly, there's not even a fig leaf between. So, why are we sending hundreds of millions of taxpayer money to fund the Russian war machine? In the interests of national security, we're sending hundreds of millions of dollars to a country that is doing terrible things and certainly not acting in our best interests. This makes no sense, it's like a Joseph Heller novel. Ya know, it's so crazy.

Не хочет Маск финансировать русскую военную машину ;) .

Google may invest and partner with Spacex on global internet satellite network

Google is close to investing in rocket maker SpaceX, according to several people familiar with the talks, creating a formidable alliance in Silicon Valley's accelerating Internet space race.

The purpose of a deal, which is still in the works, is to support the development of SpaceX satellites that could beam low-cost Internet around the globe to billions who don't have it.

The price and terms Google and SpaceX are discussing couldn't be learned although one person familiar with them said Google has agreed to value SpaceX north of $10 billion and that the size of the total round, which includes other investors, is very large.

Google had previously talked about launching their own network of 180 satellites (to complement their internet balloons and drones.

Elon Musk wants to use the revenue from a global internet network to fund the cost of building cities on Mars.

Spacex raises $1 billion from Google and Fidelity

Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) has raised a billion dollars in a financing round with two new investors, Google and Fidelity. They join existing investors Founders Fund, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Valor Equity Partners and Capricorn. Google and Fidelity will collectively own just under 10% of the company.

SpaceX designs, manufactures, and launches the world's most advanced rockets and spacecraft. This funding will be used to support continued innovation in the areas of space transport, reusability, and satellite manufacturing.

It is believed that the Spacex satellite network would have up to 4000 smaller mass produced satellites that would fly at about 700 kilometers for faster response and communication speeds.

В 2016 SpaceX планирует запустить несколько тестовых спутников связи собственной разработки.

ЦитатаWASHINGTON -- SpaceX is planning to launch a series of experimental low Earth orbit communications satellites starting next year to test technologies for a future low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation the company announced earlier this year.

In a May 29 filing with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission, SpaceX sought an experimental Ku-band communications license for two spacecraft, named MicroSat-1a and MicroSat-1b, that it plans to launch in 2016 on a Falcon 9. The satellites will operate in near-polar orbits at an altitude of 625 kilometers.

The company said the two satellites are the first of series of six to eight "test and demonstration" spacecraft the company plans to launch. "These are prototype engineering verification vehicles that will enable in-space performance assessment and rapid iteration of technologies," the company said in its filing. "A main objective of the test program is to validate the design of a broadband antenna communications platform (primary payload) that will lead to the final LEO constellation design."

SpaceX said in its FCC application that will test the satellites using three ground stations. One will be located at SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California. A second will be at what SpaceX calls its "commercial satellite development center" in Redmond, Washington. The third will be at the Fremont, California, headquarters of Tesla Motors, the electric car company that, like SpaceX, is run by Elon Musk.

The FCC application offered few details about the two spacecraft themselves. The spacecraft, identical to each other, are designed to operate for six to twelve months, but SpaceX said it would consider operating them beyond that period "until such time as the primary mission goals can no longer be met." The orbit inclination and small size implied by the "MicroSat" name suggests the satellites will be launched as secondary payloads on a mission from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

In a speech in Seattle in January, Musk said SpaceX was planning a 4,000-satellite constellation to provide broadband Internet access, and had submitted filings for that system to the International Telecommunication Union. He did not give a specific schedule for developing that system.

The FCC application also did not provide a schedule for that full-scale system, other than it plans to deploy the constellation "in the near future."

SpaceX speaks up for its Seattle satellite operation after months of low-key work

SpaceX has provided a rare update on its Seattle-centric plans to develop a multibillion-dollar Internet satellite network, saying that the work is now at a "critical stage."
That assessment is part of the company's argument against giving away the bandwidth required for such a network for another purpose - specifically, for 5G mobile broadband services that would be offered by Dish Network and other members of an industry coalition.
The Multi-Channel Video Distribution and Data Service Coalition filed a petition on Wednesday with the Federal Communications Commission on Wednesday, asking that the Ku-band spectrum currently being reserved for satellite broadband should be reallocated for 5G services.
"There is simply no basis to jeopardize 5G deployment to give additional spectrum to a speculative NGSO (non-geostationary orbit) service that already has access to ample spectrum," the MVDDS Coalition told the FCC.

The coalition said the bandwidth reserved between 12.2 and 12.7 GHz was just sitting unused, and that it could use the spectrum instead to provide "faster speeds, enhanced connection ublquity and truly real-time services and applications" to 5G customers.
That brought a quick response from SpaceX as well as from Intelsat, one of the partners in a competing Internet satellite venture led by OneWeb. Intelsat told the FCC that OneWeb already has a pending FCC application seeking access to the reserved frequencies, and that the bandwidth "will not lie fallow."
Another satellite operator, SES, said it plans to use the bandwidth as well and was"alarmed by the prospect" that it might be reallocated.
The petition comes at precisely the wrong time.
In her filing, SpaceX's Patricia Cooper wrote that the coalition's request "comes at precisely the wrong time, given the ongoing, active investment and technological developments" relating to Internet satellite services.
Seventeen months ago, SpaceX unveiled its plans to develop a multibillion-dollar Internet satellite network, with much of the work being done at offices in Redmond, Wash. Since then, the company hasn't said much about how things are going. In fact, SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell said last October that the satellite plan was"actually very speculative at this point."
OneWeb has taken a higher profile: One of the partners in the venture is Airbus Defense and Space, which is gearing up to build hundreds of small satellites that would be launched into low Earth orbit starting in late 2017 or early 2018. In April, OneWeb Satellites said it would build a satellite manufacturing facility near NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. And just last week, the company announced that it had signed supply contracts with MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates in Canada, Sodern in France and Teledyne Defense in Britain.
Although SpaceX has downplayed its plans, there are ample signs of activity. For instance, plane-watchers noted last month that the company's billionaire founder, Elon Musk, made a quick stopover in the Seattle area - presumably to visit the Redmond office. (SpaceX provided no information about the visit.)

Musk has said that as many as 1,000 employees could eventually be working at the Redmond office, with many of them engaged in the satellite project. SpaceX's website currently lists more than 60 staff positions and internships to be filled in Redmond and Seattle. And last month, the Puget Sound Business Journal quoted SpaceX spokesman John Taylor as saying the Redmond operation was "making progress."
Cooper's filing for SpaceX puts a stronger spin on the operation - and also explains why the company is playing its cards close to the vest.
"It comes as no surprise that the details of these proposed NGSO FSS (fixed satellite service) are not currently well-known," Cooper wrote, "as the development and deployment of satellite systems are highly proprietary and may take several years to finalize, during which time the operators hold details as highly confidential for obvious competitive reasons."
Further details may soon come out in the open: In a document filed with the FCC a year ago, SpaceX said it would begin conducting satellite experiments this year. That was before a Falcon 9 rocket failure led to a months-long suspension of the company's launch schedule. Despite that setback, it's still possible for the first test satellites to go up as secondary payloads as early as next month, when SpaceX starts launching Iridium Next satellites from Vandenburg Air Force Base in California.

ЦитатаSpaceX plans to deploy a large constellation of small satellites for low-latency, worldwide,
high-capacity Internet service in the near future.
As a development step towards this initiative, SpaceX presently intends to experiment with
6-8 test and demonstration satellites starting in 2016. These are prototype engineering
verification vehicles that will enable in-space performance assessment and rapid iteration of
technologies. The first physical instantiation will be two satellites: MicroSat-1a and
MicroSat-1b.
Both of these satellites will be deployed from a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket into an orbital plane
of 625km circular at 86.6 degrees inclination. The designed operating lifetime of each
satellite is 6-12 months, but if this lifetime is exceeded, SpaceX plans to continue operation,
within the bounds of the license, until such time as the primary mission goals can no longer
be met. Both MicroSat-1a and MicroSat-1b are identical in construction.
A main objective of the test program is to validate the design of a broadband antenna
communications platform (primary payload) that will lead to the final LEO constellation
design. Using three broadband array test ground stations positioned along the western coast
of the United States, SpaceX intends to test this communication path at every possible
opportunity. With the orbit profile provided, broadband array tests (Ku-band) will be
conducted on average once every 0.9 days with duration of less than 10 minutes. For the
reasons explained below, interference with other systems is generally very unlikely.
