Satellites for Asia and India are orbited on Arianespace's third Ariane 5 mission of 2011
May 20, 2011 – Ariane Flight VA202

The 44th consecutive successful Ariane 5 flight has further underscored the flexibility and performance of this workhorse launch system – orbiting a pair of telecommunications spacecraft today to serve one of the world's most dynamically-developing regions, and maintaining Arianespace's mission pace in 2011.

Lifting off on time from the Spaceport in French Guiana at 5:38 p.m., the heavy-lift vehicle deployed its Asian/Indian payload of the ST-2 and GSAT-8 satellite passengers during a 31-minute mission that marked Ariane 5's third launch this year.

"Coming less than one month after the previous launch, this 44th success in a row is particularly remarkable and demonstrates the competence of our operational team, which – launch after launch – confirms that it is the world's best," said Arianespace Chairman & CEO Jean-Yves Le Gall.

Nine Ariane 5 flights in 12 months

As a confirmation of Ariane 5's reactivity and accuracy, today's flight was its ninth mission in 12 calendar months, providing a near-perfect payload delivery.  The estimated orbital parameters at the cryogenic upper stage's injection were:
- Perigee: 249.3 km. for a target of 249.3 km.
- Apogee: 35,941 km. for a target of 35,940 km.
- Inclination:  2.49 deg. for a target of 2.50 deg.

The daytime launch was Arianespace's second at the service of ST Satellite Ventures, and follows the orbiting of its ST-1 spacecraft in 1998. ST-2 will be utilized by this joint venture of Singapore Telecommunications Ltd. (SingTel) and Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom Company in delivering IP-based fixed and mobile, voice and data transmission satellite services to businesses – especially direct broadcast TV operators and maritime companies in Asia and the Middle East.

ST-2 was built by Japan's Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (MELCO), and is configured with Ku- and C-band relay duties.  Based on the company's DS2000 spacecraft bus, the satellite weighed an estimated 5,090 kg. at liftoff, and its manufacture by MELCO represented the first time this Japanese manufacturer has entered the commercial telecommunications satellite market outside of its home country.

The second passenger in Ariane 5's dual-payload "stack" on today's launch was GSAT-8, which marked the 14th Indian satellite lofted by Ariane family vehicles during a 30-year timeframe.

GSAT-8 was built by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and weighed approximately 3,100 kg. for liftoff.  Configured with 24 transponders, this satellite will augment India's Ku-band relay capabilities – primarily for direct-to-home TV broadcast services, with a coverage zone over the entire Indian subcontinent.  Additionally, GSAT-8 carries the two-channel GAGAN system for aircraft navigation assistance over Indian airspace and adjoining areas.

Three more Ariane 5 missions planned in 2011

Today's 58th flight of an Ariane 5 was the 202nd liftoff of an Ariane vehicle since the European launcher family began operations in 1979.

Following this success, Le Gall confirmed that Arianespace will continue the sustained mission cadence in 2011, with three more Ariane 5 launches and the initial liftoffs of its medium-lift Soyuz and lightweight Vega planned from the Spaceport this year – complemented by continuing Soyuz operations at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

The Spaceport's next Ariane 5 flight is targeted for early July with the ASTRA 1N and BSAT 3C/JCSAT110R spacecraft, to be followed several days later by a Soyuz mission from Baikonur Cosmodrome with six Globalstar satellites.

The heavy-lift Ariane 5 provided a total payload delivery performance of more than 9,010 kg. for today's dual-satellite mission.

Такой вопрос возник: а за каким государством (де-юре) будет записан ST-2? За Сингапуром?
Тайвань ведь не является членом ООН, юридически это китайская территория.
По крайней мере, про госпринадлежность первого ST на ооновском сайте указано:

International Designator:    [1998-049A]
Name of Space Object:   [ST 1]
State/ Organization:    [(for Singapore, etc)]

ЦитироватьGSAT-8 takes to the skies

India's GSAT-8 satellite has been lofted into space aboard an Ariane 5 rocket that lifted off from the European launch facility in French Guiana in equatorial South America. It is the 20th satellite designed and built indigenously by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to meet this country's requirements for space capacity in communications and broadcasting. The 3,100-kg spacecraft's 24 transponders will relay signals in radio frequencies known as the Ku-band. These transponders will be used for Direct-To-Home television broadcasts as well as to support communications using small satellite dishes known as Very Small Aperture Terminals (VSATs). Other Indian communication satellites that are currently operational have about 150 transponders working in various frequency bands. That capacity needs to be augmented, given that a power glitch on the INSAT-4B knocked out half its transponders last July. Two satellites, GSAT-4 and GSAT-5P, were lost in consecutive failures of the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) last year. Besides, the INSAT-2E, launched 12 years ago, is nearing the end of its life. ISRO plans to launch the GSAT-12, weighing 1,400 kg, on the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle this July. The GSAT-10, with 36 transponders and weighing 3,400 kg, is to be put into orbit by another Ariane 5 rocket next year. Another communication satellite will go up when the GSLV is flown again, which is expected to take place in the first quarter of 2012.

The GSAT-8 is also carrying a payload that will broadcast data to increase the accuracy and ensure the integrity of navigation based on signals from orbiting satellites of the U.S. Global Positioning System (GPS) and the Russian Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS). The resulting improvement in accuracy and reliability will allow aircraft, equipped with suitable receivers, to make precision approaches for landing at all runways in the country. Aircraft will also be able to fly more direct routes to their destination, saving time and fuel. Such space-based augmentation systems have begun functioning in the U.S., Europe, and Japan. Ground stations for the Indian system, known as GAGAN (GPS Aided GEO Augmented Navigation), a joint effort by ISRO and the Airports Authority of India, have been put in place. After the GSAT-8's GAGAN payload becomes operational, further steps for testing the system as a whole and securing the necessary certification can start. All of India's remote sensing satellites are now launched domestically. This should be achieved in the case of communication satellites too. For that, the GSLV must be made as reliable as the PSLV and the next generation GSLV Mark-III got ready as soon as possible.

Orbit Raising Operation of GSAT-8 Satellite Conducted Successfully

The first critical orbit-raising manoeuvre of GSAT-8 was successfully conducted at 03:58 hrs (IST) this morning (May 22, 2011) with the firing of the 440 Newton Liquid Apogee Motor (LAM) on board GSAT-8 for 95 minutes by commanding the satellite from ISRO's Master Control Facility (MCF) at Hassan in Karnataka. The satellite was oriented suitably before the start of LAM operations prior to this critical manoeuvre. With this LAM operation, GSAT-8 perigee has been raised to 15,786 km. The apogee is at 35,768 km and the inclination of the orbit with respect to the equatorial plane has been reduced from 2.5 deg at the time of entering into orbit to 0.5 deg now. The present orbital period is 15 hours 56 minutes.

It may be recalled that GSAT-8 was successfully launched by Ariane 5 launch vehicle yesterday (May 21, 2011) from Kourou, French Guiana. The launch vehicle placed GSAT-8 in the intended Gesynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO) with a perigee (closest point to earth) of 258 km and apogee (farthest point to earth) of 35,861 km.

All systems onboard the satellite are functioning normally.

Orbit of GSAT-8 Satellite Raised Further

In the second orbit raising manoeuvre conducted at 12:22 hrs IST today (May 23, 2011), the Liquid Apogee Motor (LAM) on board GSAT-8 was fired for 35.8 minutes by commanding the satellite from ISRO's Master Control Facility (MCF), Hassan. With this LAM firing, GSAT-8 perigee (closest point to earth) has been raised to 32,385 km. The apogee (farthest point to earth) height remains at 35,768 km. The inclination of the orbit with respect to the equatorial plane has been reduced to 0.06 deg. GSAT-8 now has an orbital period of 22 hours 29 minutes. The satellite will now be in the continuous radio visibility of MCF, Hassan.

GSAT-8 was launched by the European Ariane-5 launch vehicle on May 21, 2011 from Kourou, French Guiana. The launch vehicle had placed GSAT-8 in an orbit with a perigee of 258 km and apogee of 35,861 km with an inclination of 2.5 deg with respect to the equatorial plane. With the first orbit raising manoeuvre carried out from MCF, Hassan yesterday (May 22, 2011), GSAT-8 had been put in an intermediate orbit of 15,786 km perigee and 35,768 km apogee and the orbital inclination was reduced to 0.5 degree with respect to the equatorial plane.

The next orbit raising manoeuvre to place GSAT-8 in near Geosynchronous Orbit is planned on May 24, 2011. Deployment of the two solar panels and the two antennas will be carried out subsequently.

GSAT- 8 Satellite Placed in Geosynchronous Orbit

India's advanced communication satellite, GSAT-8, launched on May 21, 2011 has reached Geosynchronous orbit with an orbital period of 23 hours 45 minutes. The satellite's orbit has a perigee of 35,543 km, apogee of 35,770 km and an orbital inclination of 0.04 deg with respect to the equatorial plane. The solar arrays on both sides of the satellite have been deployed and they are tracking the Sun and generating electrical power. These solar arrays are designed to generate 6,240 W of electrical power. Two large dual grid Ku-band antennae have been opened and are pointing towards the Earth.

Today, the satellite has been put into the final orbital configuration pointing towards the Earth continuously. GSAT-8 is presently located at 47 deg East longitude and is being moved towards its final orbital position of 55 deg East where it will be co-located with INSAT-3E satellite.

In Orbit Testing (IOT) of 24 Ku-band transponders of GSAT-8 is scheduled to begin on June 1, 2011 and the satellite is expected to be ready for service in about a month. Testing of the GAGAN navigational payload will be conducted from the new Navigation Control Centre at Kundanahalli near Bangalore.
