Экипаж "Атлантиса" приготовил памятный сюрприз для МКС

МОСКВА, 15 июл - РИА Новости. Экипаж шаттла "Атлантис" оставит на борту МКС необычный сюрприз, призванный увековечить память о 30-летней программе шаттлов, сообщил журналистам командир шаттла Крис Фергюсон (Chris Ferguson).

"Атлантис" завершит свой последний в истории полет, приземлившись в штате Флорида 21 июля. Ранее его возвращение на Землю планировалось 20 июля, но затем миссия была продлена на один дополнительный день.

"Вообще-то у нас на этот раз запланировано кое-что особенное - мы собираемся оставить очень необычную вещь в ходе, как мы надеемся, очень трогательной церемонии прощания... Я бы посоветовал всем просто дождаться нашего сюрприза", - заявил Фергюсон в ходе пресс-конференции с МКС, которая транслировалась в прямом эфире на сайте НАСА.

Специалист миссии Рекс Уолхейм (Rex Walheim) добавил, что обычно экипажи шаттлов оставляют на МКС эмблему экспедиции, и команда "Атлантиса" оставит свой след в одном из узлов станции и в шлюзовой камере.

Последний в истории полет многоразового космического корабля типа "спейс шаттл" завершает эту 30-летнюю программу. В марте свой последний полет совершил челнок "Дискавери", в мае - "Индевор". "Вышедшие на пенсию" шаттлы планируется передать в американские музеи.

Астронавт шаттла "Атлантис" Сандра Магнус поместила многоцелевой логистический модуль "Рафаэлло" (Raffaello) в грузовой отсек шаттла с помощью манипулятора "Канадарм-2" (Canadarm-2), сообщило американское аэрокосмическое агентство НАСА в своем официальном микроблоге в Твиттере.

Модуль "Рафаэлло" был доставлен на Международную космическую станцию (МКС) на шаттле "Атлантис". На модуле были грузы запасов в объеме более пяти тонн. "Рафаэлло" доставят обратно на Землю, модуль вернется с грузами объемом около трех тонн.

Отстыковка "Атлантиса" от МКС намечена на вторник в 10.28 мск, посадка шаттла запланирована на 21 июля в 13.58 мск во Флориде.

Последний в истории шаттл "Атлантис" пристыковался к МКС 10 июля. "Атлантис" стал последним кораблем, запускаемым по программе Space Shuttle ("космический челнок"), которая существовала 30 лет. "Ушедшие на пенсию" корабли будут переданы в американские музеи. Причина прекращения полетов шаттлов - выработка ресурса кораблей и огромные финансовые затраты на подготовку и обслуживание космических челноков.

Atlantis crew presents model orbiter, flag[/size]


Before floating back into Atlantis, four shuttle astronauts presented two special gifts to six International Space Station residents: a small model of a shuttle orbiter and a small American flag flown on the first shuttle mission.

Both were displayed on or by the forward hatch of the Harmony node, the "shuttle's regular old parking spot," said Atlantis commander Chris Ferguson.

Ferguson said the model carried signatures of "modern day titans" of the shuttle program including Program Manager John Shannon and Launch Director Mike Leinbach, but couldn't fit the tens of thousands of shuttle workers "who rose to orbit with us over the past 30 years, if only in spirit."

Expedition 28 flight engineers Mike Fossum and Ron Garan placed the flag on the Harmony node hatch.

Ferguson said it represented "not just a symbol of national pride and honor, but in this particular case it represents a goal."

The flag will be presented to the next crew to arrive on a U.S. launch vehicle, "hopefully in just a few years," Ferguson said.

There was no video avaialable to show the presentations, but it came on in time to see the two crews thank and congratulate each other and exchange hugs before the shuttle crew floated out of the Harmony node and into Atlantis, becoming the last shuttle crew to depart the station.

Hatches will soon be shut and the Atlantis crew will prepare to undock at 2:28 a.m. Tuesday.

The shuttle crew is scheduled to go to sleep at 1:59 p.m., a half-hour after the station crew.[/size]

The crews of STS-135 and Expedition 28 float on the International Space Station with a U.S. flag that was flown on the first space shuttle mission, STS-1, in 1981. The flag returned to orbit on this mission to be presented to the space station crew. It will remain onboard until the next crew launched from the U.S. retrieves it for return to Earth. It will then fly from Earth again, with the crew that launches from the U.S. on a journey of exploration beyond Earth orbit.

The STS-135 crew consists of NASA astronauts Chris Ferguson, Doug Hurley, Sandy Magnus and Rex Walheim; the Expedition 28 crewmembers are JAXA astronaut Satoshi Furukawa, NASA astronauts Ron Garan and Mike Fossum, and Russian cosmonauts Andrey Borisenko, Alexander Samokutyaev and Sergei Volkov. Shuttle and station commanders Ferguson and Borisenko are in the 12 o'clock and six o'clock positions, respectively, on the circle.[/size]

Hatches on a vestibule connecting Atlantis to the International Space Station officially were sealed shut at 10:28 a.m. EDT, after a shuttle crew exited the outpost for the final time.

"Never again will we see a space shuttle open through that doorway," said NASA TV commentator Josh Byerly.

Mike Fossum and Ron Garan, members of the station's Expedition 28 crew, swung the Harmony node hatch closed a short time later, revealing the U.S. flag just presented by the Atlantis astronauts.

"As we put this flag on the hatch that leads to Atlantis right now, and when we close that hatch when these guys go by, we're closing chapter in the history of our nation," Garan said during a farewell ceremony. "But in the future, when another spacecraft docks to that hatch with crew members on board, and we open that hatch, we are going to be opening a new era, and raising the flag on a new era of exploration beyond low Earth orbit."

The flag, flown on the first shuttle mission, is to be returned to Earth by the next crew to arrive at the station on a U.S. launch vehicle.

Also visible in the upper left corner of the picture is a model shuttle orbiter the Atlantis crew left behind to commemorate the shuttle's essential role in station assembly.

In all, hatches were open between Atlantis and the station for seven days, 21 hours and 41 minutes.

During all 37 shuttle flights docked at the station, hatches were open for a total of 234 days, 14 hours and 30 minutes.

The four Atlantis astronauts have begun preparations to undock at 2:28 a.m. Tuesday.

Nearly 10 full days have elapsed since Atlantis launched July 8. Landing at Kennedy Space Center is planned around 6 a.m. Thursday.

The Atlantis crew will go to sleep around 2 p.m. today. [/size]

 A ship's bell rang out in the International Space Station a few minutes after Atlantis became the last shuttle to leave it at 2:28 a.m. today.

"Atlantis departing the International Space Station for the last time," radioed station flight engineer Ron Garan, observing a longtime naval tradition followed for departing orbiters. "Thank you for your 12 docked missions to the ISS and for capping off 37 space shuttle missions to construct this incredible orbiting research facility. We'll miss you guys, Godspeed, soft landing and we'll see you back on Earth in the fall."

"From our unique vantage point right here perched above Earth, we can see the International Space Station as a wonderful accomplishment," replied Atlantis commander Chris Ferguson, a retred Navy captain. "Born at the end of the cold war, it's enabled many nations to speak (as) one in space. As the ISS now enters the era of utilization, we'll never forget the role the space shuttle played in its creation. Like a proud parent we anticipate great things to follow from the men and women who build, operate and live there. From this unique vantage point, we can see a great thing has been accomplished. Farewell ISS. Make us proud."

Atlantis made its first of seven visits to Russia's Mir space station in June of 1995, and went on to visit the International Space Station 12 times.

The current flight is Atlantis' 33rd since 1985, and the shuttle program's 135th and last since 1981.

The first ISS components were joined in space in December 1998, on an Endeavour mission commanded by Bob Cabana, now Kennedy Space Center's director.

After the final undocking, in darkness, Atlantis pilot Doug Hurley is backing the orbiter to a point 600 feet in front of the station.

He'll pause there while the station, under the power of Russian segment thrusters, yaws 90 degrees to present its football field-length axis, a 26-minute maneuver. Hurley then will guide Atlantis through a final flyaround of the station.

Atlantis mission specialists Sandy Magnus and Rex Walheim will snap digital pictures of the station's structural truss and modules to help assess their condition.

 Station turns for unique final flyaround[/size]





 The International Space Station is rotating to set up a first-of-its-kind final flyaround by a space shuttle.

The station is twisting sideways, or yawing, 90 degrees so that Atlantis looks directly down its long structural truss directly faces Atlantis from front to back, rather than presenting the typical side to side view.

 Orbiters fly around the station before heading home so astronauts can take pictures of its exterior condition, helping engineers on the ground assess how it's weathering the harsh environment of space, including potential strikes by micrometeoroids or orbital debris.

The station's unique positioning today will provide a last chance for camera-wielding shuttle astronauts to take pictures of areas of the station not seen during past flyarounds.

 Because of the angles, Hurley only needs to fly a half-lap over the top of the station to collect the desired imagery.

Atlantis is firing forward and aft steering jets to maintan its position 600 feet in front of the station.

Russian segment thrusters are propelling the station through its 90-degree yaw, which was expected to take about 26 minutes to execute.

Mission controllers reported some concern about cold temperatures from shadowing on solar array struts that could have cut the maneuver short, but they did exceed limits.

МОСКВА, 19 июл - РИА Новости. Погодные условия благоприятствуют успешному возвращению шаттла "Атлантис" из последнего в истории программы шаттлов космического полета, сообщил на брифинге руководитель наземной группы управления полетом Лерой Кэйн (Leroy Caine).

По его словам, посадка шаттла запланирована на четверг, 05.56 по времени восточного побережья США (13.56 мск) на аэродроме во Флориде, на мысе Канаверал. "Это примерно за 40 минут до восхода Солнца", - сказал он.

"Прогнозы говорят, что есть очень большие шансы, что все будет в порядке", - добавил он.

Проверка теплозащитных плиток шаттла закончена, по последним данным, никаких проблем с ними не ожидается.

"Атлантис" во вторник в 10.28 мск в последний раз отстыковался от модуля "Хармони" (Harmony) Международной космической станции (МКС).
