Rasad is Military/government remote sensing satellite. It means 'Observation' in English.

The mission of Fajr is not yet known.

One of these may be the satellite referred to as AUT SAT, designed by students of the
Amir-Kabir University of Technology. Construction of AUT SAT began 2010 Jan.

Originally said by an Iranian government minister to be scheduled for period Aug 24-30.
Aug 16 came an announcement referring to launch by the end of the current Iranian year
(2011 Mar 20), and hinted at delays due to testing:

Iranian misunderstanding.

Defense Minister: New space projects to be unveiled
Tehran, Jan 30, IRNA – Defense Minister Brigadier-General Ahmad Vahidi said on Sunday that different high-tech projects such as domestically-made satellites named 'Rasad and Fajr' are ready for inauguration.   
    
'Fajr satellite is the first domestic orbit-oriented satellite with the ability of changing its oval orbit between 300 to 450 kilometers that leads to increasing the life of satellite to 1.5 years,' he added.

Brigadier-General Vahidi also referred to Rasad satellite as the first video satellite with the capability of grabbing video images with the resolution of more than 200 meters.

Iran unveils stations for remote images[/size]

On occasion of the Ten Days of Dawn celebrations, Iran has unveiled two domestically-manufactured fixed ground stations and another mobile one for receiving remote sensing images.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony, Iran's Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi told reporters that the fixed ground stations are completely designed and built by Iranian experts.

He added that the Geographical Department of Iran's Defense Ministry will use the stations to receive and process images with an accuracy of one meter and provide them to users across the country.

The Iranian minister noted that each station would be able to cover an area within a radius of 2,500 kilometers and to prepare images within an area estimating 10 million cubic meters every 24 days.

Vahidi noted that the images would be used in sectors including agriculture, urbanization, natural disasters and a variety of other fields.

The remarks came after the Iranian minister said late in January that the Islamic Republic would unveil a new range of missile and satellite projects during the Ten Days of Dawn celebrations.

"Fajr (Dawn) is the first satellite with the ability to change from the elliptical orbit of 300-450 kilometers to a circular orbit of 450 kilometers which increases the life expectancy of the satellite by one year and a half," Vahidi said.

The Rasad (Observation) satellite is the country's first satellite for photography, he added.

"The thrust of the Safir (Ambassador) 1-B rocket engine has been increased from 32 to 37, and it can carry a satellite weighing 50 kilogram's into an elliptical orbit of 300 to 450 kilometers," the Iranian defense minister went on to say.

The other rocket, Kavoshgar (Explorer) 4, has the ability to carry space laboratories containing biologic cargos within a range of 120 kilometers, he added.

The Islamic Republic of Iran successfully launches its second satellite christened Rassad (Observation) into the earth's orbit.[/size]


The satellite, which is the country's first such imaging device, was launched by the Safir-e-Rassad satellite carrier on Wednesday thanks to Iranian aerospace scientists and experts' endeavor, IRNA reported.

Despite its 15.3-kilogram weight, which puts it under the category of the micro-satellites, Rassad has all features of a big satellite.

It has undergone all the stages required for its designing, manufacturing, assembly, test and preparation for launch inside the country.

It will orbit the earth at an altitude of 260 kilometers 15 times every 24 hours.

Its mission is to take images of the earth's surface and relay them to the earth-based stations together with telemetric information.

The satellite is equipped with solar panels and uses solar energy to work.

Iran launched its first domestically-produced satellite Omid (Hope) in 2009, which made it the ninth country to develop satellite launch capability.

Tehran also plans to launch the country's first manned mission to space by 2019.
