On Wednesday, February 16, Arianespace's first mission of the year successfully launched the second ATV (Automated Transfer Vehicle), designated Johannes Kepler, for the European Space Agency.

200th Ariane launch, 56th Ariane 5 launch, 42nd success in a row

This latest successful Ariane 5 launch, the 200th Ariane launch and the first mission in 2011, once again proves the launcher's operational capabilities. Ariane 5 handles a complete range of missions, from commercial launches into geostationary orbit to dedicated launches into special orbits.

The 56th launch of an Ariane 5, and 42nd successful mission in a row, clearly demonstrates the launcher's reliability and availability. It also set a new payload record, by boosting more than 20 metric tons into low Earth orbit.

Today's mission confirms that Arianespace's launch Service & Solutions continue to set the global standard and guarantee independent access to space for all customers, including national and international space agencies, private firms and governments.

Second successful Ariane 5 ES launch

For the ATV2 Johannes Kepler mission, Arianespace used the Ariane 5 ES version of the launcher. It was the second successful launch of this version,  following the original ATV1 Jules Verne mission in March 2008.

Arianespace uses the Ariane 5 ES version to launch ATV cargo vessels to the International Space Station. Ariane 5 ES uses the same lower composite as the standard Ariane 5 ECA launcher, comprising the cryogenic main stage and solid boosters, plus a special upper composite, the EPS reignitable storable propellant stage.

A new mission for the Guiana Space Center

Today's launch marks Arianespace's second mission to the International Space Station, confirming the Guiana Space Center's membership in the highly select "club" of launch sites serving the Space Station, alongside Baikonur, Cape Canaveral and Tanegashima.

ATV2 mission at a glance

The mission was carried out by an Ariane 5 ES launcher from Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. Liftoff was on Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at 6:50 pm local time in Kourou (21:50 UT, 10:50 pm in Paris, 3:50 pm in Houston, TX, and on Thursday, February 17, at 12:50 am in Moscow).

The Automated Transfer Vehicle, or ATV, is designed to bring supplies to the International Space Station (water, air, food, propellants for the Russian section, spare parts, experimental hardware, etc.), and to reboost the ISS into its nominal orbit. The ISS now weighs more than 376 metric tons, including the European laboratory Columbus. After being docked to the ISS for several months, the ATV2 will be loaded with waste items, then detached from the ISS and deorbited.

After separating from the launch vehicle, the ATV2 will be autonomous, using its own systems for energy (batteries and four large solar panels) and guidance (GPS, star sensor), in liaison with the control center in Toulouse. During final approach, an optical navigation system will guide the ATV2 to its rendezvous with the Space Station, where it will automatically dock several days after launch. The ATV2 will remain docked to the ISS for about three and a half months, before separating and making a guided reentry, where it will disintegrate in the atmosphere.

The ATV2 was built by Astrium leading a large consortium of European manufacturers. A large cylinder measuring about 10 meters long by 4.5 meters in diameter, the ATV2 comprises two main parts: a service module with the avionics and propulsion systems, and a pressurized cargo carrier.

Ariane 5 opens a busy year of Arianespace missions with the milestone launch of another Automated Transfer Vehicle for Europe[/size]

Arianespace began a landmark year of launch activity with an "exceptional" Ariane 5 mission today that orbited the second European Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) for servicing of the International Space Station.


Ariane 5 begins its ascent from the Spaceport's ELA-3 launch zone with the ATV payload.

Lifting off at 6:50 p.m. from the Spaceport in French Guiana, the Ariane 5 vehicle carried its heaviest payload ever, lofting a total mass of 20,050 kg. – which included 19,700 kg. for the ATV, plus associated integration hardware.

"This exceptional launch was the 200th for Ariane, and therefore marks a particularly important step for European space," said Arianespace Chairman & CEO Jean-Yves Le Gall in comments from the Spaceport.  "In addition, it is the second time that Europe contributes to the International Space Station's servicing.  And finally, this is the first of 12 launches Arianespace is targeting this year – nine to be performed from here in French Guiana and three from Baikonur Cosmodrome."

Today's launch used an Ariane 5 ES version equipped with a storable propellant upper stage, with a flight time of just over one hour.  During the mission, the upper stage performed two burns that were separated by a ballistic coast phase, after which the ATV was deployed with the following estimated orbital parameters:

    * Perigee: 254.9 km. for a target of 255.3 km.
    * Apogee: 262.2 km. for a target of 262.3 km.
    * Inclination: 51.6 deg. for a target of 51.6 deg.

The ATV cargo resupply spacecraft was developed for the European Space Agency by an EADS Astrium-led industry consortium, and has been named after German astronomer and mathematician Johannes Kepler. It is the first operational ATV, following the qualification flight of ATV Jules Verne, which was launched by another Ariane 5 in March 2008.

European Space Agency Director General Jean-Jacques Dordain said the Ariane 5's launch was viewed – and photographed – by the International Space Station's crew as they watched from the facility's Cupola, an observatory module that is equipped with seven windows.  "We usually see an Ariane launch from the ground, but this time we will have pictures from yet another perspective, in space," he added.

More than seven metric tons of payload is loaded on the ATV Johannes Kepler – including 4,534 kg. of propellant to be used in the International Space Station's attitude control system, and for the facility's altitude re-boost operations. Additionally, it carries nearly 1,600 kg. of dry cargo, plus 100 kg. of oxygen to be used aboard the station.

"With this success, the Guiana Space Center once again confirms that it is part of the very small 'club' of space centers that serve the International Space Station – along with Baikonur, Cape Canaveral and Tanegashima," Le Gall said.

The launch today was the 42nd consecutive success for Ariane 5 – and the fourth in the past 3.5 months, confirming its reputation as the industry's workhorse heavy-lift vehicle.  "This results from the professionalism, commitment and efficiency of Arianespace's operational teams, who currently are performing Ariane 5 launches, and in a few months will be doing the same with Soyuz and Vega," Le Gall explained.

Arianespace's busy 2011 manifest calls for the Spaceport to host six Ariane 5 missions, along with the first two launches of the medium-lift Soyuz, and the lightweight Vega's maiden flight; along three more Soyuz missions from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

Arianespace's next flight is the March 29 liftoff of an Ariane 5 with the Yahsat 1A and Intelsat New Dawn telecommunications satellites.

МОСКВА, 17 фев - РИА Новоси. Второй европейский автоматический грузовой корабль ATV-2, названный в честь немецкого астронома "Иоганн Кеплер", должен состыковаться с Международной космической станцией 24 февраля в 18.45 мск, сообщает Роскосмос.

Ракета-носитель Ariane-5 с космическим грузовиком стартовала в ночь на четверг с космодрома Куру во Французской Гвиане, на сутки позже намеченного срока. Стыковка "Иоганна Кеплера" с МКС изначально планировалась на 23 февраля.

Сближение и стыковка ATV, на котором установлены системы стыковки и дозаправки российского производства, к стыковочному отсеку служебного модуля "Звезда" МКС будут осуществляться в автоматическом режиме под контролем Центров управления в Королеве и Тулузе, а также под контролем экипажа российского сегмента станции.

В составе МКС корабль будет находиться три месяца, с его помощью будет проводиться коррекция орбиты полета станции. Европейский грузовой корабль способен доставить на МКС около 7,5 тонны топлива, воды, кислорода, азота и других материалов. Это приблизительно в три раза больше, чем доставляет на станцию российский грузовой корабль "Прогресс". С помощью его двигателей также осуществляется коррекция орбиты станции. Кроме того, "грузовик" предназначен для освобождения МКС от отработанных материалов и мусора.

Корабль получил имя в честь немецкого астронома и математика Иоганна Кеплера. Такое решение было принято в 2009 году в связи с 400-летием публикации научной работы Кеплера "Новая астрономия". Системы стыковки и дозаправки для кораблей ATV поставляет РКК "Энергия".

Первый ATV получил название "Жюль Верн" (Jules Verne) в честь первого писателя в жанре научной фантастики, третий - имя итальянского физика Эдоардо Амальди (Edoardo Amaldi).

Грузовые корабли ATV доказали свою состоятельность в 2008 году, когда "Жюль Верн" совершил демонстрационный полет на МКС, куда доставил 4,5 тонны продовольствия, воды, топлива, материалов и оборудования. Корабли ATV играют важную роль в логистике станции и операционной деятельности.

Двигатели второго европейского космического грузовика ATV-2 "Иоганн Кеплер", который в четверг должен пристыковаться к Международной космической станции (МКС) в 18.45 мск, в пятницу будут включены в тестовом режиме для проверки их работы перед будущими операциями по коррекции орбиты полета МКС, сообщил РИА Новости представитель российского Центра управления полетами (ЦУП).

"Включение двигателей европейского грузовика запланировано на 13.33 мск пятницы. Операция продлится 198 секунд (чуть более трех минут). В результате тестового включения двигателей высота орбиты МКС будет увеличена незначительно, почти на 900 метров", - сказал собеседник агентства. "Тестовое включение двигателей европейского грузовика необходимо, чтобы потом, когда понадобится, проводить операции по коррекции орбиты МКС с его помощью и, если возникнет необходимость, проводить маневры по отклонению станции от космического мусора", - пояснил представитель ЦУП.

По его словам, в операции также будут участвовать российский грузовой корабль "Прогресс", двигатели которого также будут запущены, чтобы скорректировать станцию по крену. В операции будут задействованы угловые двигательные установки модуля "Звезда", которые исключат курсовые отклонения МКС влево-вправо и вверх-вниз.
