TEHRAN (AFP) - President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Iran is working on a three-stage rocket to carry a satellite 1,000 kilometres (more than 600 miles) into space, Fars news agency reported on Thursday.

"The country's scientists are working on a three-stage rocket that will take us to 1,000 kilometres," the agency quoted Ahmadinejad as saying to a local television in the western city of Hamedan on Wednesday.

"Last time, we sent a satellite to 250 kilometres... Next year it will be sent to 700 kilometres, and the year after that to 1,000 kilometres," he said.

In February 2009, Iran launched its first home-built satellite, named Omid (Hope), into orbit to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the 1979 Islamic revolution.

The launch raised fresh concerns among world powers already at odds with Tehran over its nuclear drive.

"The rocket that we used for the first satellite had an engine thrust of 32 tonnes at the time of launch, but the rocket that we are building will have the thrust of 120 or 140 tonnes," Ahmadinejad said.

Western countries suspect Iran is secretly trying to build a nuclear weapons capability and fear the technology used to launch the space rocket could be diverted into development of long-range ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

Tehran strongly denies the charges, saying its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes and that it has the right to the technology already in the hands of many other nations, including its archfoe the United States.

Ahmadinejad also disclosed details about another satellite, which he said would be launched in the "near future."

"We plan to launch an experimental telecommunication satellite with a lifetime of one year," he said.

Telecommunication Minister Reza Taghipour had said in July that a home-built satellite, Rasad 1, was being readied for launch for the last week of August, without giving other details.

Ahmadinejad also announced that Iran had plans to put telecommunication satellites in the 35,000-kilometre (about 22,000 miles) orbit -- where geostationary satellites are placed -- within "five or six years," Fars reported.

In July, Ahmadinejad said the country planned to send a man into space by 2019 as a blow to Western powers pressing Tehran over its continued uranium enrichment work in defiance of UN Security Council demands.

"Iran was due to send a man into space by 2024 but in response to threats and Security Council resolutions against Iran, the plan was pushed forward by five years and the project will be launched in 2019," he said.

The hardline president has made scientific development one of the main themes of his presidency, asserting that Iran has reached a peak of progress despite international sanctions and no longer needs help from foreign states.

He has also rejected that the ambitious space programme has military goals.

In February 2010, Iran launched a home-built rocket carrying live animals -- a rat, turtles and worm -- in a capsule, marking the country's first experiment in sending living creatures into space.

It also unveiled another home-built rocket designed to carry satellites, dubbed Simorgh (Phoenix) equipped to carry a 100-kilogram (220-pound) satellite 500 kilometres (310 miles) into orbit.

Defence Minister Ahmad Vahidi said then a refinement of the Simorgh design would allow satellites to be placed in a 1,000-kilometre (more than 600 miles) orbit.

The 27-metre (90 foot) tall multi-stage rocket weighs 85 tonnes and its liquid fuel propulsion system has a thrust of up to 100 tonnes.

ЦитироватьIran to Send Larger Satellites into Space

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced that his country plans to send larger and heavier satellites into space in future.

"We are going to put a larger satellite into space that can operate for one year and send data," Ahmadinejad said on Saturday, adding, "Iran plans to shoot satellites to altitudes of 700 km, then 1,000 km."

"Once this target is realized, placing a satellite at a geosynchronous orbit of 35,000 km will be easy."

Ahmadinejad also said that the country would send man into space by 2025.

Earlier he had announced last month that the country plans to send a home-made measurement satellite into orbit in the near future.

"Iran's measurement satellite will be launched into space from an Iranian launch-pad and will have an Iranian exchange station and control station," Iranian president said.

Ahmadinejad further noted Iran's plans for sending astronauts into space in 2024, and said that the issue has gone under a second study at a recent cabinet meeting and that the cabinet has decided to implement the plan in 2019, five years earlier than the date envisaged in the original plan.

Iran has recently taken wide strides in aerospace. The country sent the first biocapsule of living creatures into space in February, using its home-made Kavoshgar-3 (Explorer-3) carrier.

Omid (hope) was Iran's first research satellite that was designed for gathering information and testing equipment. After orbiting for three months, Omid successfully completed its mission without any problems. It completed more than 700 orbits over seven weeks and reentered the earth's atmosphere on April 25, 2009.

After launching Omid, Tehran unveiled three new satellites called Tolou, Mesbah II and Navid, respectively. Iran has also unveiled its latest achievements in designing and producing satellite carriers very recently.

Also, Iran has recently unveiled a new generation of home-made satellites and a new satellite carrier called Simorgh (Phoenix).

The milk-bottle shaped rocket is equipped to carry a 60-kilogram (132-pound) satellite 500 kilometers (310 miles) into orbit.

The 27-meter (90 foot) tall multi-stage rocket weighs 85 tons and its liquid fuel propulsion system has a thrust of up to 143 tons.

ЦитироватьLapan developing rockets to put satellites in orbit

Jakarta, Nov 11 -- (ANTARA) - The National Aeronautics and Space Agency (LAPAN) is building a rocket named RX-550 with a cruising capacity of more than 200 kilometers in the initial phase of a project to make one capable of putting a satellite in orbit, a spokesman said.

LAPAN spokesman Soewarto Hardhienata said here on Thursday the RX-550 rocket would undergo a static test in December this year and a flight test in 2012.

"This one, which will consist of four stages, will be part of an RPS-01 rocket to put a satellite in orbit," Soewarto said.

He said LAPAN had earlier successfully tested the flights of RX-320 and RX-420 rockets whose components would be used to build a RPS-01 rocket to carry a satellite to an orbit around earth.

The rockets, he said, would be the prototypes of satellite carrying rockets to be launched in 2014.

"Besides developing home-made rockets, we are also doing a satellite making project. The aim is to have home-made rockets and satellites," Soewarto said.

He said LAPAN had in the past three years been implementing a project to make an earth surface monitoring satellite as part of its efforts to master satellite technology.

"The result was our Polar LAPAN-TUBSAT (LAPAN-A1) satellite created in cooperation with Germany," he said, adding that the satellite was successfully placed in orbit and until now still functioning well. (ANTARA)

Official Underscores Iran's Achievements in Space Fields

(FARS News Agency Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) "The Islamic Republic has made invaluable achievements in the field of space, which are bound to grow through the endeavors of Iranian scientists," Fazeli said.

A number of other Asian countries have expressed readiness to collaborate with the Islamic Republic in its space projects, Fazeli noted on Thursday.

The Islamic republic news agency quoted the official as saying that China has sought Iran's assistance for the making of navigational satellites.

He further pointed out that the country now eyes deep space explorations and made a reference to ISA's efforts to increase the participation of private sector in order to boost Iran's space plans.

Earlier this month, Deputy Head of the Iranian Space Agency for Technology Mohammad Mardani said that Iran has prepared the necessary technological grounds to send man into space by 2022.

Mardani also announced that Iranian scientists are currently working on the designs of 10 to 15 more Iran-made satellites.

"We have plans for the next 15 years and now we are designing and building a satellite for the 36,000km orbit which will provide service in telecommunication, radio and TV fields," Mardani added.

Iran has recently taken wide strides in aerospace. The country sent the first biocapsule of living creatures into space in February, using its home-made Kavoshgar-3 (Explorer-3) carrier.
