NASA  Deputy Administrator Lori Garver and Jim  Kohlenberger, Chief of Staff of the White House Office of Science and  Technology Policy recently visited Orbital - Dulles, Virginia  campus. After a brief overview of the company and its programs, Ms. Garver, Mr.  Kohlenberger and other NASA guests took a tour of Orbital mission operations center  where it will direct its commercial logistics missions to deliver supplies to  the International Space Station. The  group also toured the company satellite manufacturing facility where they viewed  a mock-up of the Cygnus spacecraft which will carry supplies to the Space  Station, as well as work in progress on the first Cygnus spacecraft. In addition, the guests were briefed on  Orbital manufacturing and test facilities and viewed several satellites in  production - both NASA scientific spacecraft and commercial communications  satellites.

 Кстати, вот что еще любопытно. С точки зрения NASA - все понятно, они специально поддерживают конкуренцию, дабы был стимул не тормозить. А что с точки зрения самих контор? Одна из них в конечном итоге первой запустит полноценную миссию и получит контракт. А вторая получается пролетит с треском и грохотом? Ведь иных покупателей на космический грузовик, кроме NASA, нету? Ну разве что Бигелоу, только что-то совсем хило у них дело идет (опять же - спроса нет?)
 Продадут все наработки России (или скорее Китаю) ?

Если не ошибаюсь, кто удовлетворит выставленные требования получат свой кусок.

Совершенно верно. Если кто-то срывает обязательства по контракту, то вторая фирма получает всё.

Контракты они уже получили (заключили) и деньги могут потерять только сорвав выполнение контракта. Все как в нормальном цивильном обществе.

The contracts include a minimum of 12 missions for SpaceX and 8 missions for Orbital Sciences.

Для полноты зоопарка Орбиталу осталось прикупить для этой разработки ещё что-нибудь в Японии. :)

А разве у них не используются японские движки на вонючке, от IHI? Много лет как уже. А для Цигнуса они еще прикупили лидар он Mitsubishi Electric. Так что японского там полно, даже на уровне подсистем.

Seattle, WA - May 10, 2011.      Andrews Space (Andrews) announced today that it has successfully delivered the first of four fight-qualified Cargo Module Power Units (CMPUs) that will supply power to payloads aboard Orbital's Cygnus spacecraft.

Andrews was contracted by Orbital Sciences Corporation (NYSE: ORB) in September 2010 to deliver three flight-qualified CMPUs, which power mid-deck locker payloads destined for the International Space Station (ISS) aboard the Cygnus cargo vehicle.   Under the $1.9 billion Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) contract with NASA, Orbital will fly eight missions between 2012 and 2015, delivering 20,000 kilograms of cargo to the ISS.  The recently delivered CMPU will provide up to 150 Watts of 28VDC payload power and will be used on the first CRS mission scheduled for early 2012.

New commercial cargo vehicle for the International Space Station preparing for launch in late 2011

Turin, May 30, 2011 – Thales Alenia Space announced that it has delivered to Orbital Sciences Corporation (NYSE: ORB) its first Pressurized Cargo Module (PCM) developed to transport cargo to the International Space Station. This first PCM will be used for the CygnusTM demonstration mission, under NASA's Commercial Orbital Transportation Services (COTS) research and development initiative with Orbital.

The module was shipped from the Thales Alenia Space plant in Turin, Italy to NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia, where Orbital will integrate it with the Cygnus service module to produce the complete Cygnus spacecraft. The first mission is currently scheduled for December 2011, using Orbital's Taurus® II launcher.

Following the demonstration flight, Thales Alenia Space will provide Orbital with eight more PCM units to be used for ISS cargo transport, in order to deliver crew supplies, spare parts and scientific experiments to the Station under Orbital's Commercial Resupply Service (CRS) contract with NASA, .

The first PCM will be followed by three more units in "standard" configuration, capable of transporting up to 2,000 kg of cargo each, along with five "enhanced" configuration units, boosting payload capacity to 2,700 kg.

"The delivery of the first Pressurized Cargo Module for commercial space transportation is a major event for Thales Alenia Space," said Luigi Maria Quaglino, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Space Infrastructures & Transportation Business Unit at Thales Alenia Space. "This program is a strong sign of continuity for our long-standing position as a leader in the space infrastructure and transportation sector. In addition, we want to highlight that the PCM delivery also clearly reflects a new trend in the space business, namely the private sector's engagement to fulfill critical services on a commercial basis – a segment in which our company is playing a major role."

The CygnusTM spacecraft comprises a Service Module (SM) built by Orbital, and a Pressurized Cargo Module (PCM) developed by Thales Alenia Space. Building on 30 years of experience in space infrastructures and transportation systems, the Cygnus PCM developed by Thales Alenia Space calls on the company's skills and expertise developed through previous programs for the International Space Station, such as the MPLM (Multipurpose Logistics Module), built by the company on behalf of the Italian space agency for NASA, and the ATV (Automated Transfer Vehicle) Cargo Carrier, built by Thales Alenia Space for the European Space Agency (ESA). Thales Alenia Space supplies half of the Space Station's pressurized volume, and is also a key player in the Columbus laboratory and prime contractor for Node 2, Node 3 and the Cupola.

    The first Pressurized Cargo Module (PCM) for Orbital's COTS demonstration mission completed Qualification and Hardware Acceptance Reviews at Thales/Alenia's facility in Turin Italy.  The PCM and its Ground Support Equipment will now be prepared for shipment from Italy to the Wallops Island Virginia launch site.  Read about the PCM in this press relise:

    As the PCM makes its way to the launch site, integration and testing of the Cygnus Service Module for the COTS demonstration mission continues in Orbital's Dulles, Virginia Satellite Manufacturing Facility.  The Service Module completed its Open Panel assembly activities and will transition to its Initial Integrated Systems Testing.
    Upon completion of all its testing, the Service Module will be shipped to Wallops Island, where it will be mated to the PCM.  The fully assembled Cygnus spacecraft will then be attached to Orbital's new Taurus II rocket and launched to the International Space Station to demonstrate the delivery of supplies and payload items.  See the Taurus II Microsite for more progress updates.
