mike

The explorer HAYABUSA, launched by M-V-5 rocket on May, 9, 2003, is flying toward the asteroid Itokawa (1998SF36). HAYABUSA will arrive at the asteroid summer of 2005. While staying nearby it for about 5 months, it will make scientific observation and collect samples from the asteroid's surface. After that, it will leave the asteroid and return to the earth summer of 2007. It will take about 4 years to return to the earth from its departure. HAYABUSA uses continuously its high performance electric propulsion engines for a round trip to the asteroid. Returning to the earth, the reentry capsule released from the explorer will enter the earth's atmosphere

Sampling
After obtaining enough data on the asteroid and making a final decision on a landing point, the spacecraft finally starts its descent to the asteroid.

Descent Procedure

The spacecraft starts the descent measuring the relative position and attitude to the surface with ONC and LIDAR. When descending, the spacecraft autonomously adjusts the propulsion engine and also transmits the image of the whole process to earth.

Although the control station on earth cannot maneuver the spacecraft as it is so far as even radio waves take more than 10 minutes to reach the earth, it can send an order to stop the descent when assessing a danger.

However, this is about all the control station on earth can do, and most of the essential decisions have to be made by the MUSES-C spacecraft itself.

At about 100m altitude, the spacecraft releases a Target Marker onto the asteroid.

The Target Marker approx. 10cm in dimension glows brightly on the asteroid's surface reflecting the flash beam from the spacecraft, by which the ONC navigates the spacecraft. From this point onward, LRF is used in place of LIDAR, which measures the distance between the spacecraft and the surface as well as the gradient of the surface by radially irradiating multiple beams. FBSs are also used to detect a dangerous contact with the surface.

After making a close approach to the asteroid, and prior to the final touch down, the spacecraft stops using the propulsion engine and enters into a free fall descent. This is to prevent the jets from contaminating the asteroid surface by coming too close to it. From this point, the engine stays halt until the completion of sampling.

After the free fall descent, sampling starts as soon as the landing of a sampler horn on the asteroid surface is detected.

Right after sampling, the spacecraft starts the engine, immediately lifts off, resumes its hovering position at 100m altitude and waits for the next order from the earth.

Sampling Technique

Compared to the moon gravity that is believed to be less than 1/6 of that of the earth, the surface gravity of the asteroid is really small and is less than 1/100,000 of that of the earth. Unless a drill or any other digging tool is secured by a strong anchor onto the surface, the spacecraft may just be pushed away before the drill actually bores a hole.

Besides, there is one more factor that makes the sampling difficult, that is, we simply do not know what the asteroid is really made of. However, this is exactly why MUSES-C is going to the asteroid.

After performing many tests and designs, we have finally come to a conclusion, which is to "break the surface".

Hayabusa probe photographs asteroid ITOKAWA

The asteroid probe Hayabusa, which was launched on May 9, 2003, from the Uchinoura Space Center, captured a photograph of the small asteroid "ITOKAWA". An image was taken by an onboard camera called the "Star Tracker" for attitude control. Although the image consisted of only a few pixels, it contributed to the final orbit correction in the final phase of a 27-month long space journey. During the trip, the Hayabusa used the earth's gravity in a fly-by and an ion engine.

The relative distance between the ITOKAWA and the Hayabusa is about 35,000 km, which is about the same distance as the altitude of an earth geostationary orbit (as of Aug. 12.) In other words, it is located about 340 million km away from the earth with the sun in-between, or a radio wave from the earth takes about 40 minutes for a round trip. The observation team is planning for Hayabusa's arrival at ITOKAWA in mid September.

As of September 4th morning of 2005, Hayabusa is at approximately 1,000 km toward Earth with respect to Itokawa, a near Earth asteroid target of the spacecraft, with the approach speed of 10 km per hour.

Hayabusa took a series of its Optical Navigation Camera aboard on the day and the photos revealed, for the first time in space, the shape information of Itokawa.

Left one was taken when the brightness was at the top, while the right one was at the bottom. The upward direction here is almost identical to the north of the ecliptic frame.
