The development of the country's second lunar probe is well on track and it is to be launched at the end of this year, a landmark event for China's space program, scientists said Monday.

"Now that the development of the carrier rocket and the satellite is complete, we have started to conduct tests on their performance," Wu Yansheng, deputy general manger of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), said at the Global Lunar Conference held in Beijing.

China said it achieved progress on key technologies on the orbiter Chang'e-2 (CE-2) - named after a legendary Chinese goddess - including lunar scrutiny, orbit control and research using a high-resolution camera.

Flying in an orbit 100 kilometers above the moon, the CE-2 is tasked to collect data for a soft-landing designed for its successor, the Chang'e-3.

Equipped with a high-resolution camera, the probe is capable of spotting lunar surface features as small as three feet across, a notable improvement compared with the 120-meter resolution of the Chang'e-1 satellite, scientists at the conference said.

Berndt Feuerbacher, president of the International Astronautical Federation, said Monday at the conference that "Lunar missions will lead us to a new understanding of the origin and the development of our Solar System."

"They will open new avenues toward utilization of lunar resources that could be used in both the exploration of outer space and here on Earth," Feuerbacher said.

Ye Peijian, the chief designer of Chang'e-1, the country's first moon probe, said in March that the CE-2 would significantly reduce the flight time.

Compared with the CE-1, the CE-2 will be equipped with a rocket with greater thrust, sending the probe directly into lunar orbit in 120 hours instead of orbiting the earth for seven days.

Ouyang Ziyuan, the chief scientist of China's Lunar Probe Project, said at the China National Science and Technology Meeting early this year that "Not only can China's spacecraft reach the moon, but it can also land on the moon, laying a solid foundation for future manned and sample return missions. The future work will be tougher."

The lunar probe is another landmark since the achievement of the manned space program and applicable satellites, he said.

"How can we use resources on the moon to solve the energy crisis on Earth? This is just one topic that we are studying," Ouyang said.

The Chang'e Project is named after an ancient Chinese legend of a beautiful young fairy who took a magic elixir, flew to the moon and lived there with a rabbit.

The legend has been depicted and adapted in many traditional Chinese stories, demonstrating a long-standing fascination with the moon in Chinese imaginations.

Lofty plans

China was the third country to put a man in space, after former Soviet Union and the United States, with Yang Liwei's 21-hour flight beyond the arth's atmosphere aboard Shenzhou-5 in 2003.

On May 7, China's space authorities added seven new members to its astronaut crew, with two women included for the first time.

The five men are fighter pilots, while the two women fly transport aircraft for the Chinese air force.

In an interview with the Changsha Evening newspaper on Saturday, Yang said the female astronauts will receive two or three years' training before they begin their mission.

China's three-phase space program was initiated in 1992. It plans to build large space stations with the ability to house astronauts for long periods of time in the third phase.

However, despite the progress made, a source with the Chinese Society of Astronautics, who would only give her surname Zhou, told the Global Times that China's space exploration is still lagging behind that of the United States, which has set its sights on Mars.

The White House has announced the cancellation of the Constellation program that was supposed to send astronauts to the moon by 2020 because it was "unsustainable."

In February, Obama's administration called for the development of "game-changing" technologies that could one day take humans to Mars.

The PLA Daily, newspaper run by the Chinese People's Liberation Army, commented in a report in March that outer space has increasingly become a new strategic high-ground for countries including India and Japan.

ЦитироватьК концу этого года будет произведен запуск китайского спутника дистанционного зондирования Луны "Чанъэ-2"

2010-09-03 20:23:19 | Russian.News.Cn

Meanwhile, at an aerospace engineering forum Thursday, Ye Peijian, Commander in Chief of the Chang'e Program and an academic at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said China's lunar-probe program, the country's first step toward deep-space exploration, is expected to orbit the moon, land and return to Earth by 2020.

Ye proposed that China launch its first manned moon landing in 2025, a probe to Mars by 2013 and to Venus by 2015.

"China has the full capacity to accomplish Mars exploration by 2013," Ye said.

Earlier this month, Wu Weiren, the chief engineer overseeing China's lunar exploration program, also revealed that work on the Chang'e-2 lunar orbiter had entered the pre-launch testing stage and it would make its first trial flight before the end of the year.

Chang'e-2 will carry out a soft-landing test in preparation for the launch of Chang'e-3, which is scheduled for 2013.

The Chang'e Project is named after a Chinese legend of a goddess who took a magic elixir and flew to the moon.

Space-program officials had said previously that the Chang'e-2 mission would be launched in October around the Mid Autumn Festival, dedicated to the Moon Goddess, Chang'e, but no precise date has been given.

"Change 2" started pre-launch testing, will be reduced to 15 km orbit
Core Tip: 9, the National Defense Industrial Authority disclosed, the current second phase of China's lunar exploration project, "Chang'e II" tasks smoothly, including the Chang'e II satellite, Long Route C carrier, etc., preparation of the five systems basically completed, is doing pre-launch test preparation, plans to be implemented before the end of this year flight test mission.
Data for: the technical features for Chang'e II
People's Network on Sept. 10 reported on the 9th, the National Defense Industrial Authority disclosed, the current second phase of China's lunar exploration project, "Chang'e II" tasks smoothly, including the Chang'e II satellite, Long Route C carrier, etc., basically completed preparations for the five systems, is doing pre-launch test preparation, plans to be implemented before the end of this year flight test mission.
Implementation of the pilot Star sangrakwol task for the "Change III" to prepare sangrakwol
"'Chang'e II' mission is designed for the 'goddess of the moon on the 3rd' sangrakwol to prepare, verify some of the key technologies lunar soft landing, to reduce risk, gain experience, so the task more difficult." Chief architect of the lunar exploration project Wuwei Ren said.
Wu Weiren introduced, compared to "Chang'e One" and "Change II" of the task increased, the number of new technologies, on lunar exploration play a key role in forming a link between, on the whole project or even the development of space industry are of great significance. As in many key technologies must be original innovation, the task more difficult, more risky, and all those involved in the systems engineering research staff is now in accordance with the "high standard, high quality, high efficiency" requirements of the work, and strive to successfully complete task.
Among them, the Chang'e II satellite is the second phase of China's lunar exploration mission of the pilot implementation of sangrakwol star of "pioneer." It was originally a "Chang'e I" satellite backup tasks, taking into account two key technology projects need to overcome many technical span and difficult to implement, and finally be transformed into the precursor of the lunar exploration project two satellite - satellite Chang'e II .
The landing to the moon only 15 km away from the track
Wuwei Ren said, "Change II" the leading role of the task that is mainly reflected in four aspects: first experience the process of flying to the moon, the moon at a distance of 100 km of track work, and landed to the moon only 15 km away from the track, on the future, "Chang 3 No. "lunar landing probe topography.
Wuwei Ren explained that the "Chang'e One" task than the "Change II" will achieve the six technical innovation and breakthrough: Breakthrough rockets to launch satellites directly into the earth-moon transfer orbit launch technologies; test X-band deep Air Control Technology, a preliminary verification of deep space monitoring system; verify 100 km lunar orbit capture technology; verify 100 km x 15 km orbit maneuver and rapid determination of rail technology; test new landing camera, and verify a substantial increase in data transmission capacity; on "Chang'e-III" pre-landing zone high-resolution imaging test.
"Can be captured is very important, if not reach the precision measurement and control, satellite may hit the moon or lost." Wuwei Ren said, "In recent months, landing to the point, since the satellite is in the side of the moon, our monitoring and control out of reach, rely on self-Orbit Satellite. "
Chang'e II satellite mission in the process, there are three major risks. Wu Weiren, said, "First, whether the satellite launch rocket into Ben precise orbit; second satellite to the moon when the moon can be successfully captured; third, smooth down 15 kilometers from the lunar orbit."
5 days to reach the moon
"To sum up, we can also use the 'quick, close, fine, more' four characteristics to describe 'Chang'e II' mission." Wuwei Ren said.
"Fast" refers to the arrival time. Compared to the first launch of lunar probe satellite to orbit the earth in the vicinity of the transition, and then after several adjustments into flying to the moon's own orbit, Chang'e II satellite launch vehicle will be sent directly to perigee 200 km, apogee of about 380,000 km of flying to the moon orbit so efficient.
Chang'e One satellite and spent nearly 14 days into working orbit, Chang'e II satellite to the moon within 5 days, 7 days we can enter into working orbit. As a result, "Change II" mission on the launch vehicle thrust demands greater precision and control of precision orbit later.
"Near" is a ring of satellites on orbit 200 km from the original down to 100 km, the closest point only 15 kilometers, will be more close to observe the moon. Compared Chang'e lunar satellite in 200 km from the moon captured by Chang'e II satellite will be 100 km from the lunar surface for braking, flying faster, track lower, more braking capacity. Uneven gravity field at the same time the Moon satellite orbit perturbation effects will also increase accordingly, thus greatly improving the accuracy of satellite brake control requirements.
Meanwhile, the Chang'e II satellite will also test orbit adjusted by the 100 km circular orbit 100 km away on points in recent months, point 15 km elliptical orbit.
"Spirit" refers to the measurement accuracy is improved, 100 km orbit the camera resolution is 10 meters, 15 km orbit to 1.5 meters, the resolution greatly.
Chang'e Chang'e II satellite will be pre-landing area on the 3rd High-resolution satellite imaging test after Chang'e satellite carrying the CCD camera at a resolution of 120 meters. The Chang'e II satellite in circular orbit 100 km and 100 km x 15 km orbit point in recent months, will be on the 3rd of the Chang'e satellite better than the pre-landing area 10 meters and 1.5 meter resolution imaging test.
"Multi" means more than experiments, to carry out deep space exploration, land camera pilot projects. Chang'e II satellite mission flight monitoring and control will be the first validation of our new X-band deep-space monitoring system. Compared to "Chang'e One" tasks used in S-band satellite-based monitoring network, X-band high frequency radio transmission, remote monitoring and control communication is better, is an important means of deep space exploration. Will also be testing a new landing camera, verify a substantial increase in data transmission capacity.
Chang'e II satellite to increase landing camera configured to test the imaging capability of the month, it has a landing with satellite imaging capabilities for lunar satellite Chang'e III to prepare a soft landing. Data transfer rate also by the Chang'e satellite 3 MB / sec double to 6 MB / sec, will be 12 MB / sec transmission rate testing.
Wu Weiren said Chang'e II satellite design life of six months, but as long as everything goes according to plan, save the fuel that allows satellite Chang'e II "with month" longer.

By Liu Chang

China's second lunar probe, the Chang'e-2 satellite, is in its final phase of pre-launch prepara-tions and is expected to be sent into space on October 1, China Central Television reported Monday.

The satellite has been installed on a Long March 3C launch vehicle, while the third pre-launch comprehensive drill finished on Saturday at Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan Province.

Ouyang Ziyuan, the chief scientist of China's lunar exploration team, told the Global Times that the countdown for the launch of the Chang'e-2 satellite has begun, and he will set out for Xichang, the launch location, in one or two days.

The only preparation work that now remains to be done is adding fuel to the rocket, which will be carried out three days before the launch.

To ensure the safety of local residents, officials at the Xichang Center held a meeting with the local government Monday to discuss evacuation and dispersal plans. Experts from the center said that residents within a 2.5-kilometer radius of the launch site should be evacuated, and residents within a 6-kilometer radius should be dispersed.

If successfully launched, the Chang'e-2 will take five days to reach its pre-set orbit, almost eight days faster than its predecessor, the Chang'e-1, and 100 kilometers closer to the Moon.

The Chang'e-2 carries a laser altimeter and a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera that can produce high-resolution 3-D images. The two devices will help find a suitable landing site for China's first lunar lander and rover, the Chang'e-3, which is expected to launch before 2013.

The Chang'e-1 satellite, launched on October 24, 2007, marked an end to a series of missions, including the launch and orbiting test and a number of exploration tasks, before it was directed to crash into the Moon on March 1, 2009.
