Only 1 launch with Soyuz is expected in 2010. Pleiades launch slips to 2011.

Vega qualification flight is also postponed to early 2011.

"The European version of Russia's Soyuz rocket will be unable to conduct more than its inaugural flight this year, rather than the two launches planned earlier, and Europe's new light-lift rocket, Vega, is unlikely to make its debut until early in 2011, the head of the Arianespace launch consortium said."

EADS Astrium selects Arianespace to launch the fourth satellite in the Skynet 5 constellation.

Jean-Yves Le Gall, Arianespace Chairman and CEO, announced today the launch contract signing of the Skynet 5D satellite with Astrium. Arianespace had already been chosen by Astrium to launch the Skynet 5A, 5B and 5C satellites.

Like the three previous spacecraft in the Skynet 5 family, Skynet 5D will be placed in geostationary transfer orbit by an Ariane 5 launcher from the Guiana Space Center in French Guiana. Launch is scheduled for the first half of 2013.

Skynet 5D, secure broadband communications for armed forces

Skynet 5D will be orbited by Arianespace for Astrium, which is contracted to deliver the satellite in orbit to the company Paradigm Secure Communications, a wholly owned subsidiary of Astrium.

Astrium's Secure SatCom Systems is the prime system integrator and system design authority for Skynet 5 and Paradigm offers secure communications services to the British armed forces, NATO, other European countries, the USA and Australia.

Built by Astrium using a Eurostar E-3000 LX platform, carrying powerful X-band transponders, Skynet 5D will weigh 4,800 kg. at launch. Previously, Arianespace orbited the Skynet 4B, 4C, 4E and 4F satellites for the British Ministry of Defence.

Ariane 5 European defense missions

Skynet 5D is the 35th military payload to have chosen an Ariane launch. This latest contract clearly illustrates the strategic facet of Ariane 5, which guarantees independent access to space for all European governments. The Ariane 5 launcher is one of the keys to the development of a common European security policy, since it plays a pivotal role in the indispensable space segment.

Since the beginning of the year, Arianespace has signed 7 launch contracts for geostationary satellites and 5 dedicated Soyuz launches.

A VNPT (Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Group) official said May 12 that Europe's Arianespace launch consortium had been selected to launch Vinasat 2 in May 2012 aboard either an Ariane 5 heavy-lift rocket or the European version of Russia's Soyuz vehicle. Vinasat 2 is expected to weigh about 3,000 kilograms at launch.

Satellite broadband and ground-terminal provider Hughes Communications has won the approval of France's export-credit agency, Coface, to provide loan guarantees for 85 percent of the cost of launching Hughes' Jupiter all-Ka-band broadband satellite aboard a European Ariane 5 rocket in early 2012, Hughes and Arianespace announced May 5.
Industry officials said the Ariane 5 launch of the 6,100-kilogram Jupiter spacecraft will cost around $110 million.
In a May 5 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Germantown, Md.-based Hughes says the contract with Evry, France-based Arianespace was signed April 30.
Jupiter, which will expand Hughes' U.S. and Canadian consumer broadband business, is under construction by Space Systems/Loral of Palo Alto, Calif., under a contract valued at $252 million. It is expected to have a throughput capacity of more than 100 gigabits per second, or 10 times that of Hughes' current Spaceway 3 Ka-band spacecraft.

June 23, 2010 – Ariane Flight V195

Tonight's dual-payload Ariane 5 mission with the Arabsat-5A and COMS satellite passengers was postponed when a launcher subsystem anomaly occurred during the final countdown.

An investigation has been initiated to identify the anomaly's cause.

The heavy-lift Ariane 5 ECA and its two payloads remain in a safe standby mode on the launch pad.

A new launch date will be announced as soon as possible.

In the two synchronized sequences performed during the launch countdown on Thursday, June 24, an atypical pressure value was observed in the pressurization system of Ariane 5's cryogenic main stage.  After precise analysis of this phenomenon, and complementary checks were carried out, Arianespace has decided to resume final countdown operations for Flight 195 with the Arabsat-5A and COMS satellite payloads.

Liftoff of the Ariane 5 launcher is now set for the night of Saturday, June 26, as early as possible in the following launch window:
From 6:41 p.m. to 7:52 p.m., local time in Kourou, French Guiana
From 5:41 p.m. to 6:52 p.m. in Washington, D.C.
From 9:41 p.m. to 10:52 p.m. UTC.

Arianespace Lands Arsat-1 Launch Contract
By Warren Ferster

WASHINGTON — Arianespace will launch the Arsat-1 satellite for Argentine satellite operator Empresa Argentina de Soluciones Satelitales Sociedad Anonima, or Arsat, in mid-2012 under a contract announced June 28 by the Evry, France-based launch services provider.

Arsat-1, expected to weigh 2,900 kilograms at launch, will be lofted from Europe's Guiana Space Center spaceport in French Guiana either as a co-passenger aboard a European Ariane 5 rocket or as the sole payload aboard a Russian-built Soyuz rocket. Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.

The satellite is under construction by Invap of Argentina, with Astrium and Thales Alenia Space, both of Europe, as major equipment suppliers, Arianespace said in a press release. It will be equipped with 24 Ku-band transponders of various types and provide services including telephone and television transmissions across Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay.

"We are very pleased with our selection of Arianespace to launch the first geostationary satellite built in Argentina," Pablo Tognetti, chairman and chief executive of Arsat, said in a prepared statement. "Our selection is the result of an international bid, in which price, excellence in space transportation and mission success ratios were critical in our decision."
