West.

http://www.ria.ru/science/20120924/758126065.html

Outage Forces GOES-14 Satellite into Service
PARIS — The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA) on Sept. 24 said it has moved a spare geostationary weather satellite, GOES-14, into position to replace the GOES-13 satellite that suffered an unexplained outage Sept. 23 that engineers have been unable to fix.

"GOES-14 will remain the primary GOES satellite over the Atlantic basin and Continental U.S. until the imager and sounder data issues on GOES-13 can be fully diagnosed and hopefully fixed," NOAA said in a statement.

GOES-13, a Boeing BSS-601 model launched in 2006 and operating at 74.6 degrees west in geostationary orbit, suffered a loss of its sounder and imager during separate but apparently related incidents Sept. 23. After initially using the GOES-15 satellite at 135 degrees west to cover at least part of the GOES-13 function, NOAA took GOES-14 out of in-orbit storage at 105.6 degrees west to replace GOES-13 for an undetermined period of time. GOES-14 was launched in June 2009. GOES-15 was launched in March 2010.

GOES-13 was designed to operate for at least 10 years.

Lockheed Martin Space System, Denver, is working under a NASA-administered contract to build the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R series of spacecraft, the first of which is slated to launch in 2015. That satellite will be renamed GOES-16 after it reaches orbit.

NOAA To Relocate Balky Weather Satellite
WASHINGTON — The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is repositioning one of its geostationary-orbiting weather satellites to replace a malfunctioning craft that had been overlooking the U.S. East Coast.

The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-14 has already taken over observations from the GOES-13 satellite, whose sounder and imager instruments were switched off Sept. 23 due to what NOAA characterized as "data quality issues." GOES-14 is now on its way to the balky spacecraft's 75 degrees west longitude orbital slot, where it is expected to arrive in 33 days, NOAA said in an Oct. 1 press release.

Engineers are still assessing what went wrong with GOES-13, which will be moved to an orbital storage spot once GOES-14 arrives, NOAA said.

NOAA typically utilizes two GOES spacecraft, one overlooking the East Coast and one covering the West Coast of the U.S. mainland. The satellites monitor weather conditions across the country and watch for severe storms approaching each coast.

Currently there are four GOES spacecraft on orbit, the newest being GOES-15, which currently overlooks the West Coast. GOES-14 had been serving as a spare until the glitch occurred on GOES-13. The oldest of these craft is GOES-12, which launched in 2001 and is currently observing South America.

NOAA's National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service operates the U.S. government's civilian weather satellites, which include spacecraft in polar low Earth orbit that provide global coverage.

GOES-12 Retired after 10 Years in Orbit
By Dan Leone | Aug. 19, 2013

In April 2003, GOES-12 became GOES-East, but in 2010, GOES-13 (above) took over GOES-East duties and GOES-12, which by then was suffering from thruster problems, was repositioned for coverage of South America. Credit: NASA photo

WASHINGTON — After 10 years of monitoring severe weather along the North and South American coasts, the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-12 was boosted to a graveyard orbit Aug 16 and switched off, a spokesman for the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said.
"That all happened Friday afternoon," NOAA spokesman John Leslie said in an Aug. 19 email.
GOES-12, built by Space Systems/Loral of Palo Alto, Calif., launched in July 2001. In April 2003, it became GOES-East: the constellation's primary observer of extreme weather along the U.S. East Coast. In 2010, GOES-13 took over GOES-East duties and GOES-12, which by then was suffering from thruster problems, was repositioned for coverage of South America. Even discounting the three years over South America, GOES-12 exceeded its design life by about three years, NOAA said in an Aug. 19 post on its website.
Currently, the U.S. geostationary weather constellation consists of GOES-13, -14 and -15, which were built by Boeing Space and Intelligence Systems of El Segundo, Calif., for 10-year missions. These spacecraft launched in 2006, 2009 and 2010, respectively.
GOES-13, now the primary East Coast satellite, is located at 75 degrees west longitude, while GOES-15 provides West Coast coverage at 135 degrees west. GOES-14, stationed at 105 degrees west as an on-orbit backup, has been activated twice since 2012 because of problems with GOES-13's imaging and sounding instruments.
The next four GOES satellites, GOES-R, -S, -T and -U, will be built by Lockheed Martin Space Systems of Denver. They are respectively slated for launch in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2024. Lockheed Martin wrested the GOES contract from incumbent Boeing in 2008, at which time the deal was worth about $1 billion. The contract is now worth about $1.357 billion, including approximately $315.6 million worth of options NOAA picked up in February for GOES-T and -U.

Monday, January 8, 2018

Makes way for next generation of weather imagery! NOAA's GOES-13 satellite has captured some of the most notorious weather events in recent U.S. history – from paralyzing blizzards in the Northeast and Midwest, to destructive hurricanes like Sandy in 2012 and last summer's historic run of Hurricane Harvey, Irma and Maria.

GOES-13 view of Hurricane Sandy intensifying the Caribbean Sea before the storm tracked up the U.S. East Coast in October 2012.

But with the emergence of the next-generation GOES-16 as NOAA's new GOES-East satellite, GOES-13, which held the position since April 2010, was powered down on January 8, 2018. It can be reactivated if one of NOAA's other operational or backup satellites experiences trouble.

At the time it launched on May 24, 2006, GOES-13 was the first of a new generation of geostationary satellites and performed well beyond its original operational design life of two years.

"GOES-13 was a reliable work horse, supplying meteorologists with the crucial imagery and data, which enabled NOAA to provide accurate forecasts and warnings of storms, many of which are in the record books," said retired Navy Rear Adm. Timothy Gallaudet, Ph.D., acting NOAA administrator.

A previous NOAA geostationary satellite, GOES-14, also deactivated, will remain NOAA's primary back-up satellite, and can be activated if either GOES-16 or GOES-15, the current GOES-West satellite, experiences technical difficulties.

The next next-generation satellite, NOAA's GOES-S is scheduled for launch on March 1, and will become the new GOES-West satellite after a checkout and testing phase, which can take up to a year. Forecasters will be able to take advantage of its advanced imagery during that phase-in time. Together, these satellites will enable NOAA to more closely monitor weather systems over North America, South America, and the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans to help protect lives and property.

In addition to the geostationary satellites, NOAA also operates a fleet of polar-orbiting satellites. The first of NOAA's next-generation polar satellites, NOAA-20, launched November 18, 2017. Both types of satellites form the backbone of NOAA's increasingly accurate weather forecasts.
