ЦитироватьIsro to launch three satellites this year

BS Reporter / Chennai/ Hyderabad May 12, 2009, 0:20 IST

The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) would launch three satellites this year including Oceansat, which would be ready in two months, said ISRO chairman G Madhavan Nair.

Oceansat would be launched through a PSLV and would be useful in monitoring the ocean atmosphere to make predictions for the fisherfolk. Another satellite would be launched through the GSLV in the next three months and the third, again through a PSLV, towards the end of the year, he said.

Speaking to the media after delivering the AV Rama Rao Technology Award lecture on Monday at the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology here, he said Isro was working to bring the benefits of the satellites to the rural areas by using them for kharif rice assessment, developing water resources, fisheries, wasteland mapping and studying the composition of atmosphere for weather forecast. "In the long run, we dream to have a rocket system built on the concept of a space shuttle, which would take off from the ground, go to space and return," he said.

Cutting down the costs of access to space was a major challenge. Also, the space industry was in search of new metals that would resist high temperatures in the order of 1,000 degree centigrade.

Though solar energy was abundant, solar cells were not efficient yet and the cost of setting up solar farms was prohibitive.

"It would be ideal if the efficiency of a solar cell increased from the present below 30 per cent to about 50 per cent," he said adding that nanotechnology could provide an answer in producing the right kind of material to increase the efficiency.

7 May 2009, 2124 hrs IST, Abhinav Malhotra, TNN

KANPUR: IIT-Kanpur which is soon going to enter into its jubilee year is ready to set  new highs in the field of space research with its much
coveted space project -- the development and the launch of the nano satellite `Jugnu'.

A team of students, working under the guidance of faculty members of the institute have been working on this project prior to the launch of Jugnu. Its launch is expected in the month of September or December, 2009. The satellite has been termed as India's first indigenously made satellite and it is expected that it will be launched by the scientists of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

Head of mechanical department, Dr N S Vyas informed that the nano satellite, Jugnu will be launched from Satish Dhawan Space Centre (also known as SHAR, located in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh) by ISRO's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV). "It is extremely cost effective and reliable launch vehicle. After its launch, Jugnu will be continuously monitored and controlled by ground station located at the campus," said Dr N S Vyas.

Weighing less than 3 kg and with most functional qualities of a normal satellite on a small platform, the payload of the satellite will include an indigenously designed camera for near remote sensing and a GPS receiver. Jugnu will transmit blinking signal, at all times, all over the earth. The designed life span of the satellite is proposed to be one year. Jugnu's design will have to overcome many challenges as it will have to face high vibrations even before its ejection. The satellite will also have to survive high doses of radiation that can cause damage to the system memory. There are many other functionality constraints on the satellite hardware due to the limited power availability.

The nano satellite project of the IIT-K is going on in the mechanical engineering department, the department which has to its credit many successful projects. One such project is the `derailment prevention project' under Dr Vyas of the mechanical engineering department, in association with RDSO, Lucknow, for enhancing the safety of the passengers.

On further exploring about the satellite, a member of the team Jugnu informed, "The images collected will also be useful in studying the vegetation and the water bodies. The satellite design is mostly indigenous. In view of the high cost associated with the launch special efforts are being made to keep the weight to the lowest minimum."

"Most of the performance tests for the sub-systems of satellite will be carried out in the institute itself, using existing infrastructure. However, launch critical tests will be carried out at ISRO centres," added the team member.

The aim of the making and launching of Jugnu is to develop a long term infrastructure and human resources in the IIT-K for future space research programs in the institute in collaboration with ISRO. The efforts of the team Jugnu were appreciated even by Dr David Morrison, director, NASA Lunar Science Institute who had visited the IIT-K campus at the time of IIT's annual technical fest, Techkriti.

GPS' India equivalent in three years
S. Anandan

Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System will cover the Indian Ocean region

Kochi: The Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS), similar to the Global Positioning System (GPS) of the U.S., will be operational in three years' time, K. Radhakrishnan, Director, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), has said.

Inaugurating a two-day national seminar on "Innovations in electronics technology for futuristic communications," organised by the Institution of Engineers (India) local centre, here on Friday, Mr. Radhakrishnan said a revolution was under way in the field of satellite navigation systems.

"India is going in a major way in this area," he said. The country will have a space-based augmentation of the GPS system Gagan (GPS-aided Geo-augmented Navigation, which the Indian Space Research Organisation [ISRO] has developed with the U.S. defence major Raytheon), to start with. Gagan will be in place in a year and a half, and is primarily meant to aid precise landing of aircraft.

"However, we plan to have our own IRNSS in three years. Covering the Indian Ocean region, this will provide positional accuracy of about 10 metres and is implemented using seven satellites, three in the geostationary transfer orbits and four in non-geostationary orbits," he said.

"Importantly, today we also have an international coordinating group under the United Nations Committee on Peaceful use of Outer Space that worries about interoperability among the GPS, the Russian Glonass, the European Galileo and (as it happens) the IRNSS."

On the major achievements of ISRO, he said by the end of the 11th Five Year Plan, the country would have at least 500 transponders, a quantum jump from the present 210 made available by 10 satellites.

"Besides the present C-band, extended C-band and Ku-band, we are also getting into the higher frequency Ka-band providing ultra small aperture terminal communication that will revolutionise rural communication ... Already, we have been able to connect a large number of hospitals — primary health centres in remote areas — to super-specialty hospitals," he said.

Later, speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Radhakrishnan said that the space agency was all set to test the indigenous cryogenic engine in the next flight of the GSLV (Geo-synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle) in August or September.

"We also have a series of PSLV [Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle] flights lined up and its next flight, scheduled for this July, will put a new Oceansat into the orbit to replace the existing one. This will have new payloads with ocean colour monitor and the scatterometer on board will give wind velocity in the Indian seas. This year will also see the launch of Resourcesat-II, besides the second flight of space recovery capsule. Preparations are also afoot to develop GSLV Mark III that can ferry a 4-tonne satellite into the geostationary transfer orbit. The launch will be in 2010 or 2011," he said.

ЦитироватьBANGALORE: India's premier space institute Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is all set to launch its communication satellite GSAT-4 by August.

GSAT-4, an experimental communications satellite, would be able to connect around one lakh villages through internet.

Though mainly commissioned as an experimental satellite, GSAT-4 would be able to guide precisely all kinds of military and civil aircraft, informed scientists at ISRO.

"GSAT-4 is getting ready and everything has been set to launch it into space in August," said M Krishnaswamy, Programme Director, ISAC, ISRO. When launched, the satellite should be able to provide better internet connectivity in remote areas of the country, he said.

Giving details of the satellite, Krishnaswamy said it was primarily constructed as a technology demonstrator.

"We had been using KU-band technology for our satellites before. With this KA-Band technology, we would be able to upgrade our band communication and navigation payload," he informed.

"It is a very futuristic satellite and will be at par with all the existing communication satellites. It will have a GPS receiver and digital connectivity on board, so that it can help in connecting the remote villages through internet," he said.

Throwing light on the future plans of ISRO, Krishnaswamy said: "Our youth-sat, a dedicated satellite for scientific experiments pursued by undergraduate and post-graduate students from various universities in India, will be launched buy ISRO at the end of this year."

In General Japan News,
Japan and India to launch space algae research
The Japanese and Indian space agencies have announced that they are to collaborate on a new project to research photosynthesis in space.

Noriaki Ishioka, a professor from the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), told AFP that JAXA and the Indian Space Research Organisation will be sending an unmanned satellite into space in October.

The objective of the mission will be to try and grow the algae spirulina aboard the satellite to study how the conditions affect growth, with the ultimate intention of using the data to inform future "space farming" projects.

Professor Ishioka said: "We will retrieve the satellite after a week or so and conduct genetic examinations on how the zero-gravity environment affects photosynthesis."

Earlier this week, another Japanese space project came to a dramatic conclusion when the Kaguya lunar orbiter completed its research mission with a crash-landing on the moon
Значит SRE-II запланирован на середину октября.

ЦитироватьПрограмма российско-индийской лунной миссии готова

 ISRO
15:00 26/06/2009

Google Earth

European flavour to India's Oceansat-2 August launch
Bangalore, PTI:

India's indigenous Oceansat-2 satellite will be launched next month from Sriharikota spaceport on the east coast and will also carry a set of six nano satellites, all of European origin.

Besides Rubin 9.1 and Rubin 9.2 nano satellites from Germany, the four cubesats lined up for the mission on board India's workhorse rocket Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle are: Beesat, built by Technical University Berlin, UWE-2 (University of Wuerzburg Germany), ITU-pSat (Istanbul Technical University Turkey) and SwissCube-1 (Ecole Polytechnique Federal de Lausanne, Switzerland).

Oceansat-2 weighing around 970 kg, is an in-orbit replacement to Oceansat-1, which has completed 10 years of service, ISRO Spokesperson S Satish said.
"It (Oceansat-2) will carry an OCM (Ocean Colour Monitor) and a Ku-band pencil beam Scatterometer. In addition, it will carry Radio Occultation Sounder for Atomospheric studies (ROSA), developed by the Italian Space Agency (ASI)," he said.

Oceansat-2 would help identify potential fishing zones, assist in coastal zone studies and significantly enhance expertise in understanding surface temperature and winds.
"Earlier, we had launched Oceansat (Oceansat-1) which essentially could look at (only) the colour of the ocean. Now, colour alone is not sufficient, we should look at the temperature and surface winds and so on," ISRO Chairman G Madhavan Nair said.

"This Oceansat (Oceansat-2) will have such space for looking at the surface winds and temperature and all those things. It will be a very comprehensive system," Nair said.
ISRO officials said the Scatterometer is an active microwave radar operating at 13.515 GHz in Ku-band with a ground resolution cell of 50 KM x 50 KM. It is expected to provide the wind vector range of four to 24 metres/second with better than 20 per cent accuracy in speed and 20 deg. in wind direction.

The OCM payload with 360 metres spatial resolution and a swath of 1420 KM, with eight narrow spectral bands is similar to Oceansat-1 OCM, but with appropriate spectral bandwidth modifications based on the experience gained. The Spectral bands are modified for Band-6 and Band-7 to improve the reflectance from suspended sediments and to avoid Oxygen absorption. OCM provides a two day repetitivity coverage of the world.
Considering that Oceansat-2 is a continuity mission to the earlier Oceansat-1, the same polar sun-synchronous orbit of 720 KM has been retained.
ROSA payload is a dual channel GPS receiver with two antennas and a receiver package. The Radio-Occultation antenna looking along the satellite velocity vector receives signals from the 'rising' GPS satellites near the earth horizon. These signals get refracted by the atmosphere and from the bending angle, the temperature and humidity profiles are derived, ISRO officials said.

ЦитироватьIndia to launch ocean monitoring satellite in August

(Source: IANS)
Published: Wed, 01 Jul 2009 at 14:05 IST
New Delhi: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is gearing up for the launch of its second ocean monitoring satellite in August, along with six European nano satellites as piggy back luggage.

"The 952 kg OCEANSAT-2 is envisaged as in-orbit replacement to OCEANSAT-1 and will be injected by the stripped down or core alone version of ISRO's workhorse rocket Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C14) in the same polar sun-synchronous orbit of 720 km," S. Satish, ISRO's director (Publications and Public Relations), told IANS from Bangalore over phone.

According to him, the intended orbit, combined with the wide swath of the satellite's footprint, will enable observation of the same area of the ocean every two days.

OCEANSAT-2 will be used for identification of potential fishing zones, sea state forecasting, coastal zone studies, weather forecasting and climate studies.

Apart from the ISRO-developed Ocean Colour Monitor (OCM) and a Ku-band pencil beam Scatterometer, the satellite will also have a Radio Occultation sounder for Atmospheric Studies (ROSA), developed by the Italian Space Agency.

The Scatterometer with a ground resolution of 50km x 50km is expected to provide accurate information on wind speed and direction.

The eight-band OCM with 360 metres spatial resolution and a swath of 1,420 km will provide information about the same area every two days.

According to Satish, the rocket will blast off from the first launch pad at ISRO's rocket launch centre at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh near here.

The designed life span of OCEANSAT-2 will be five years but the actual usage may go beyond that as happened with OCEANSAT-1, which was launched in 1999 but is still working.

ISRO will not decommission OCEANSAT-1. The satellite will go into oblivion once its components start dying.

Piggy backing on OCEANSAT-2 will be six nano satellites from Europe, together weighing 25 kg.

This will be the second time that ISRO will launch a cluster of nano satellites. In 2008 ISRO - launching its cartography satellite (CARTOSAT-2A) and Indian Mini Satellite (IMS-1) - also sent up eight nano satellites and set a world record of maximum number of satellites sent up in a single launch.

After this ISRO plans to send into orbit a heavier communication satellite GSAT-4 in September or October through another rocket, the Geo Synchronous Launch Vehicle (GSLV).

GSAT-4 will carry a multi-beam Ka-band bent pipe and regenerative transponder and navigation payload in C, L1 and L5 bands. The satellite can guide civil and military aircraft.

GSAT-4 will also carry a scientific payload, TAUVEX, comprising three ultra violet band telescopes developed by Tel Aviv University and Israel space agency (ELOP) for surveying a large part of the sky in the 1400-3200 A wavelengths.

ЦитироватьBangalore, July 29 (IANS) The technology safeguard agreement (TSA) signed recently paves the way for India to launch US-made satellites from its spaceport at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh, a top space agency official said Wednesday.

"Space cooperation with the US has been high on the government agenda. We have negotiated and signed the TSA with the US State Department to enable us launch US-made satellites and satellites carrying US components on commercial terms," Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman G. Madhavan Nair told IANS here.

The TSA was signed July 20 in the presence of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna in New Delhi.

Prior to the agreement, users of non-commercial satellites had to wait for clearance by the US administration case-by-case.

"The TSA will smoothen the arrangement now. The satellites will be brought to India and we will provide the launch services on mutually agreeable commercial terms," Nair said on the margins of a launch event.

Antrix, the Rs. 10-billion commercial and marketing arm of the space agency, will enter into commercial terms with users for launching their satellites.

In the non-commercial satellite space, users in diverse areas will be able to put medium to lightweight satellites in lower orbits for various applications.

ISRO can launch such spacecraft as a piggyback onboard its polar satellite launch vehicle (PSLV) and geo-synchronous satellite vehicle (GSLV).

Though the TSA creates opportunities for the Indian space agency to get more foreign non-commercial satellites for launch from its spaceport, the proposed commercial space launch agreement (CSLA) with the US government will enable India compete in the international market for launching heavy commercial satellites.

"Heavy commercial satellites also could be considered on a case-by-case once we have the CSLA in place," Nair pointed out.

Official sources hinted that the CSLA would be signed during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visit to Washington in November.

The state-run ISRO has two launch pads at Sriharikota, about 90 km north of Chennai, for putting communication and remote-sensing satellites in polar and geo-synchronous orbits on board PSLV or GSLV.

Allaying fears of global meltdown impacting space industry, Nair said the demand for communications, direct-to-home services, earth observation and scientific experiments had remained steady.

"We are finding that demand for communications, broadcasting and remote-sensing satellites or transponders is going (steady) much more than we have anticipated. Our target is how to bridge the demand-supply gap by putting more resources," Nair noted.

ISRO plans to increase the number of launches per year making optimal utilisation of resources available at its spaceport.

"We have increased the number of launches from hardly one to three or four every year. We have already launched two satellites this year and two more, Ocenasat and GSAT-4, are due by this year-end."

Clarifying that there was no end-user agreement with the US in space cooperation, Nair said half of ISRO's centres were not under the US sanctions anymore though some of them are still under the entity list requiring clearance by the US Commerce Department for using technologies and products manufactured by American firms.

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: India's lunar probe Chandrayaan-I, which suffered a set back after its star sensors failed, will be subject to a review in September to analyse the space craft's functioning and its future, G. Madhavan Nair, Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation has said.

The space craft is "doing fine" as is evident from the pictures taken recently by the Terrain Mapping Camera on board, he told reporters on Wednesday after launching an "Integrated GIS and Image Processing Software" (IGIS) developed by ISRO, Antrix corporation and Scanpoint Geomatics Ltd.

TSA

When asked about the benefits of the new Technology Safeguards Agreement (TSA) with the United States, he said that the agreement would smoothen launching of US satellites, or satellites with US components, from India. "Satellites will be brought here and we will provide launch services on mutually agreeable commercial terms." While India earlier needed clearance from the US government case by case, TSA enables ISRO to directly deal with the user, he added.

Final tests are underway for Oceansat II – envisaged to assist in sea state forecasting, coastal zone studies and provide inputs for climatic studies – and the launch is likely to take place in the first week of September. The satellite will be launched by a PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle).

GSLV Mark II

It has taken "longer than expected" to develop the cryogenic phase of launch vehicle GSLV Mark II, which is scheduled to launch communications satellite GSAT 4 later this year, said Mr. Nair. The final tests of the indigenously developed cryogenic engine are taking place now at Mahindragiri in Tamil Nadu and the launch vehicle will go to Sriharikota end of August. GSAT 11 which aims at providing advanced telecom services will be launched in three years, said Mr. Nair.

The IGIS package launched here allows users to visualise and manipulate the spatial data geographically and to create maps and images. It also provides tools needed to place the data on a map, display it in an effective manner and create interactive displays that link reports, graphs, tables, imagery and other elements to the data.

India would, by the second-half of September, launch Oceansat-2 into the space, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman G Madhavan Nair said.

The integration of the spacecraft, Oceansat-2, designed to identify potential fishing zones, assist in sea state forecasting and coastal zone studies and provide inputs for weather forecasting and climate studies, has been completed, Nair told reporters.

"The thermovat test is over and right now, vibration and other tests are progressing. I hope that in next 15 days we would be able to move it to Sriharikota — the spaceport in Andhra Pradesh from where it would be launched, the ISRO chief said adding we hope that by second half of September we should be able to make this launch.

Oceansat-2 is in-orbit replacement to Oceansat-1, launched by the space agency in May 1999 to study physical and biological aspects of oceanography. It would blast off on board India's home grown workhorse Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) from Sriharikota on the East coast.

The spacecraft would carry an Ocean Colour Monitor (OCM) and a Ku-band pencil beam Scatterometer for the first time, besides a Radio Occultation Sounder for Atmospheric Studies (ROSA), developed by the Italian Space Agency - ASI.

The Scatterometer with a ground resolution cell of 50 kms x 50 kms is expected to provide the wind vector range of four to 24 metres/second with better than 20 per cent accuracy in speed and 20 deg in wind direction.

"The Scatterometer is a very good instrument for getting surface wind on the sea. It again requires for sea state forecasting. And for maritime navigation, the wave height and disturbance is also important," Nair said.

The eight-band OCM is similar to the one in Oceansat-I with appropriate spectral bandwidth modifications based on the experience gained. OCM, with 360 metres spatial resolution and a swath of 1,420 kms, would provide a two-day repeativity, he added.

The rocket would also carry six nano satellites from Europe as piggybacks, Nair, also Secretary in the Department of Space, said .

Considering that Oceansat-2 is a continuity mission to Oceansat-I, the same polar sun-synchronous orbit of 720 kms has been retained, he said adding data from Oceansat-1 was very widely used by fishermen.
