Herschel will be the largest space telescope of its kind when launched. Herschel's 3.5-metre diameter mirror will collect long-wavelength infrared radiation from some of the coolest and most distant objects in the Universe. Herschel will be the only space observatory to cover the spectral range from far-infrared to sub-millimetre wavelengths.

Мade from 12 silicоn-cаrbide petals brazed togеther to form a single structure аnd coаted with a lаyer of reflеctive aluminum.

A space telescope that will search for Earth-like planets in the galaxy was mounted atop a Delta 2 rocket at its Cape Canaveral launch pad Saturday.

NASA's Kepler spacecraft is scheduled for launch March 5.

Efforts to hoist the craft into the towering gantry at pad 17B were thwarted by bad weather and high winds on Thursday and Friday mornings.

After leaving the Astrotech satellite processing complex near Titusville and driving into Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on Thursday, managers were forced to put the spacecraft inside a military building for temporary storage due to the unacceptable weather.

Kepler went to the pad Friday morning but couldn't be lifted then either, again returning to a nearby facility to wait out the winds.

But despite the weather's interference to the pre-launch schedule, NASA says the back to back delays are not expected to postpone the March 5 liftoff date. An agency spokesman said there's enough slack in the schedule to make up the lost time.

Kepler was delivered to Florida's Space Coast on January 6 from builder Ball Aerospace & Technologies' factory in Boulder, Colorado. Technicians put the spacecraft through final testing and then loaded storable propellant for the mission.

A solid-fuel Star 48B motor that serves as the Delta 2 rocket's third stage was brought into the cleanroom for attachment beneath the spacecraft. The two were joined together February 16. Two days later, the payload was enclosed in a protective transportation canister and placed aboard a trailer for the trip to launch pad 17B.

The United Launch Alliance Delta 2 rocket to propel Kepler into a solar orbit trailing Earth is known as the 7925-10L configuration. The three-stage vehicle has the added power of nine strap-on solid rocket boosters.

On-pad stacking of the rocket began October 21 with erection of the first stage. The 10-foot-diameter nose cone will be installed around Kepler next week to complete the rocket assembly process.

A pair of three-minute launch windows will be available March 5 for the Delta rocket to lift off. They open at precisely 10:48:43 p.m. and 11:16:34 p.m. EST.

Kepler will stare at stars in a patch of the Milky Way to detect the faint dimming of light indicative of passing planets. The spacecraft is equipped with a 95-megapixel array of charged couple devices, known as CCDs, the largest camera ever flown in space.

"The Kepler vehicle is really a marvel of engineering," said Jim Fanson, the Kepler project manager from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. "In order to find these (planets), we have to be able to measure the brightness changes of the stars down to the 20 part per million level, that's an extremely challenging measurement. It's akin to measuring a flee as it creeps across the headlight of an automobile at night. That's the level of precision we have to achieve."

The observatory is designed to find rocky planets orbiting at the right distance from their parent stars where liquid water, and perhaps life, could exist.

"Kepler's mission is to determine whether Earth-size planets in the habitable zone of other stars are frequent or rare; whether life in our Milky Way galaxy is likely to be frequent or rare," said William Borucki, the Kepler science principal investigator at NASA's Ames Research Center.

Live at the Cape: Kepler Launch a Success
NASA's Kepler spacecraft separated from the Delta II rocket's third stage just over an hour after blasting off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, marking a successful conclusion to Friday night's launch.

Mission managers received more good news after midnight.

Kepler communicated with a tracking station in California at 12:11 a.m. EST Saturday, and a short time later confirmed that its solar panels were producing power.

All systems appear to be operating properly as the spacecraft coasts toward an orbit trailing Earth around the sun.

It took several minutes to confirm separation from the United Launch Alliance vehicle through a tracking station in Australia, adding some suspense to the outcome.

Launch managers said they were trying to figure out what caused the delay, but the desired result was achieved.

"It was a very smooth countdown," said Omar Baez, launch director for NASA's Launch Services Program, which is based at Kennedy Space Center.

The program rebounded from a setback last month, when a NASA climate satellite failed to reach orbit after launching from California.

Friday marked the 139th successful launch by a Delta II in the program's 20-year history.

Kepler now begins a 60-day commissioning phase before it officially begins hunting for planets.

Once it is up and running, around May, Kepler will begin to stare at more than 100,000 stars in the Milky Way, recording minute changes in light caused by crossing, or transiting, planets.

For at least 3.5 years, the $600 million mission will monitor changes in the stars' brightness.

Kepler hopes to determine if rocky planets the size of Earth are common or not, and to estimate how many orbit in habitable zones around their stars - places where liquid water and life could exist.

It takes about a year for Earth-size planets to circle the habitable zone of stars like our sun, and scientists want to see three transits before confirming a planet's existence.

So mission findings that are expected to rewrite textbooks will likely take about four years to announce.

Mission scientists expect to find dozens of Earths in habitable regions, but say the results will be just as profound if they find none.

"Kepler is, frankly, a mission for the ages," said Geoff Marsy, a science co-investigator for the mission from the University of California at Berkeley, before the launch. "It is the first telescope capable of detecting Earth-like planets around other stars. And of course since the time of the Greeks - Aristotle, Democritus - they pondered whether the Earth was unique."

Ground-based telescopes have found more than 300 planets over the last 15 years, mostly gas giants that could not support life.

Orbital To Build New Space Science Satellite To Study X-Ray Polarization
The GEMS satellite will be the first observatory to systematically measure X-ray polarization which encodes information about the structure of cosmic sources, unlocking a previously hidden astrophysical world.

by Staff Writers
Dulles VA (SPX) Jul 09, 2009
Orbital Sciences has announced that it has been selected by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to design, manufacture, integrate and test a new low-Earth orbit (LEO) space science satellite that will study X-ray polarization in space.

Under the $40 million contract, Orbital will provide the spacecraft bus and conduct mission operations for the Goddard Space Flight Center's (GSFC) Gravity and Extreme Magnetism (GEMS) mission. The GEMS contract was awarded to Orbital under the space agency's Small Explorer (SMEX) series of cost efficient and highly productive space science satellites.

Orbital has built several other SMEX satellites for NASA, including the in-orbit GALEX, AIM and IBEX spacecraft, and is currently developing the NuSTAR spacecraft that is scheduled for launch in 2011. The GEMS mission is being led by the project's Principal Investigator Dr. Jean Swank and is being managed by GSFC. It is currently scheduled to launch no later than 2015.

"Orbital is very pleased to be able to continue our support for NASA's SMEX program with our selection by the Goddard Space Flight Center to build and operate the GEMS satellite," said Mr. Mike Miller, Orbital's Senior Vice President for Science and Technology satellite programs.

"With our proven capabilities to build and deploy very reliable satellites to support the nation's space science research, we are looking forward to working with Dr. Swank and her team on another important mission."

The GEMS satellite will be the first observatory to systematically measure X-ray polarization which encodes information about the structure of cosmic sources, unlocking a previously hidden astrophysical world.

Previous space-based X-ray observatories have been insensitive to polarization, which refers to the direction of the electric field of electromagnetic waves. Polarization measurements will allow scientists to study scattering, magnetic fields and strong gravitational fields.

"The collaboration among the GEMS participants during the study phase resulted in a strong team that was selected by NASA from among several other proposed missions to go forward with its important scientific research," said Dr. Swank.

"Over the next several years, we look forward to completing the satellite and flying a mission that will add important and useful new information to the study of astrophysics."

The purpose of the GEMS mission is to help scientists answer fundamental questions about the universe, such as: Where is energy released near black holes? What is the origin of X-ray emissions from pulsars? What is the magnetic field structure in high energy nebulae?

The GEMS team will make the data from the mission readily accessible to the astrophysics community and the general public on NASA's High Energy Astrophysics Science Archive Research Center website.

The GEMS satellite will be based on Orbital's proven LEOStar-2 TM spacecraft bus design. GEMS will be the eighth satellite to be based on the LEOStar-2 platform. Other LEOStar-based satellites that Orbital has built or currently has in development for NASA include the four SMEX satellites mentioned above, plus the Dawn interplanetary spacecraft that was launched in 2007 and the SORCE Earth science satellite that is currently in its seventh year of operation.

In addition to its program management role, NASA's GSFC will provide the X-ray polarimeter instrument and oversee the Science Operations Center, science data processing, systems engineering and education and public outreach. Other program partners include NASA's Ames Research Center, the University of Iowa and ATK, Inc.
