:wink:

proposed that the close Mars flyby be followed by a Venus flyby to bend the craft's course toward Earth.
The Venus flyby would be an exploration bonus, Crocco wrote, allowing the crew to glimpse "the riddle which is
concealed by her thick atmosphere." Crocco calculated that an opportunity to begin an Earth-Mars-Venus-
Earth flight would occur in June 1971. [4]

For the [NASA Future Projects Office owned Early Manned Planetary-
Interplanetary Roundtrip Expeditions (EMPIRE) piloted
flyby/orbiter study.] EMPIRE study, three contractors studied piloted flyby and "capture" (orbiter) expeditions to Mars and
Venus. Aeronutronic studied flybys[7]; Lockheed looked at flybys and, briefly, orbiters [8]; and General Dynamics
focused on orbiter missions.[9]

The [TRW Space Technology Laboratory] study [contracted by NASA's Ames Research Center in 1963,
supervised by Robert Sohn] proposed a new alternative—a Venus swingby
at the cost of a modest increase in trip time. A ship
returning from Mars in 1975 could, the study found, cut its Earth reentry speed to 46,000 feet per second by
passing 3,300 kilometers over Venus's night side. A Venus swingby during flight to Mars in 1973 would allow
the ship to gain speed without using propellant and thus arrive at Mars in time to take advantage of a slower
Mars-Earth return trajectory. According to TRW's calculations, Venus swingby opportunities
occurred at every Mars launch opportunity. [29]

29. William Normyle, "Manned Mars Flights Studied for the 1970s," Aviation Week & Space Technology (27 March 1967): 63.

The 1966 Planetary Joint Action Group study assumed the following steps:
• Piloted Mars/Venus Flybys (1975-80): The first
piloted Mars flyby mission would leave Earthorbit
in September 1975. Mars flyby launch
opportunities would also occur in October 1977
and November 1979. Multiple flyby missions
were possible—a Venus/Mars mission could
start in December 1978, and a Venus/Mars/
Venus mission could launch in February 1977.
These would dispense automated probes based
on Mariner and Voyager technology.
• Piloted Mars Landing and piloted Venus
Capture (orbiter) missions (post-1980) would
see introduction of [Atomic Energy Commission]AEC-NASA nuclear-thermal
rockets.

[The NASA Headquarters Office of Manned Space
Flight] OMSF advanced planner Edward Gray and his deputy
Franklin Dixon first publicly proposed the Planetary
JAG's [Planetary Joint Action Group (JAG)],
Apollo-based piloted Mars flyby as an FY 1969
new start the next month (March 1967) at the AAS
Fifth Goddard Memorial Symposium, where they presented
a paper called "Manned Expeditions to Mars
and Venus." [31]

Expeditions to Mars and Venus,"

1967), pp. 107-35.

Congressman Joseph Karth (Democrat-Minnesota), chair of the House
Subcommittee on Space Science and Applications, saw
it differently. Normally a strong NASA supporter, he
lashed out at the "ostrich-like, head-in-the-sand
approach of some NASA planning," and added, "Very
bluntly, a manned mission to Mars or Venus by 1975 or
1977 is now and always has been out of the question—
and anyone who persists in this kind of misallocation of
resources is going to be stopped." [42]

42 William Normyle, "Priority Shift Blocks Space Plans," Aviation Week & Space Technology (11 September
1967): 27.

In January 1968, Boeing proposed this complex Mars expedition plan using nuclear rockets and an opposition-class
trajectory. Report listed opportunities for nine Venus-swingby, one conjunction-class, and five opposition-
class Mars expeditions between November 1978 and January 1998. The conjunction-class mission would
last 900 days, while the Venus-swingby and opposition class missions would last from 460 to 680 days.

In August 1969, Wernher von Braun presented NASA's vision of a Mars expedition in the 1980s to the
Space Task Group and to Congress. Von Braun told the STG that the twin Mars ships
would fly by Venus on 28 February 1983, to use the planet's gravity to slow their approach to Earth, thereby
reducing the amount of braking propellant needed to enter Earth orbit. During swingby the astronauts
would map Venus' cloud-shrouded surface with radar and deploy four automated probes.

The 1981 Case for Mars conference.  Among the concepts presented was S. Fred Singer's "PH-D Proposal,"
which drew upon Shuttle related technology expected to exist in 1990 Singer's scenario had staying
power—he was still writing about it in the spring of 2000.  The 1990-91 target launch date would allow Singer's
expedition to take advantage of a Venus flyby opportunity to gain speed and change course without using
propellant.

The Bekey task force proposed in summer of 1989 an opposition-class trajectory with a Venus flyby for the initial
Phobos expedition.

Inspiration Mars: Some Thoughts About Their Plan
    Полный текст: http://spaceref.com/news/viewnews.html?id=1700
    [/li][/LIST]

    Несколько фрагментов:
    ... I am not interested in comparing the Inspiration Mars (IM) plan to NASA's plans but to focus on
    !!!  what could be done to improve that mission. !!!
    ... In the engineering world it is always more efficient to see what others have done before you run off to redo the work.

    There is a 2002 paper from the Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets by Okutsu and Longuski entitled Mars Free Returns via Gravity Assist From Venus. This paper is interesting as it examines the free return trajectory as an abort scenario for a NASA mission to Mars. Using an Earth to Venus to Mars to Earth (EVME) flyby they obtained the following numbers

    *    475 Day Mission + >10 for the Aerocapture/reentry
    *   A delta V excess of 4.43 km sec at departure
    *   Return Velocity of 13.94 km/sec
    *   March 24, 2017 departure
    *   Venus Flyby Date?
    *   March 9, 2018 Mars Arrival
    *   Return Date July 11, 2018

    This scenario saves 26 days over the Patel scenario. It also has a lower outgoing delta V and a slightly lower return delta V. The problem is that it is almost ten months sooner than the 2018 window which may be problematic to keep the cost down. The incoming delta V is a bit lower than the Patel scenario and every little bit helps. The Venus flyby is a major benefit though as it would up the inspiration quotient considerably. Since the Patel scenario also has a Venus distance flyby the thermal considerations in design are the same. This one is well worth trading against the Patel scenario.
    ... A paper by Foster and Daniels titled Mission Opportunities for Human Exploration of Nearby Planetary Bodies discusses flyby missions of several asteroids and Mars including the EVME flybys of the other papers. This is a more recent treatment on the subject and it has some interesting numbers. The first interesting flyby is a EVME flyby with a launch date of April 6, 2017 a month later than the Okutsu and Longuski mission previously mentioned. The relevant numbers are:

    *   493 Day Mission + >10 for the Aerocapture/reentry
    *   A delta V excess of 4.19 km sec at departure
    *   Return Velocity of 13.8 km/sec
    *   April 6, 2017 departure
    *   Venus Flyby Date?
    *   Mars Flyby Date?
    *   Return Date August 22, 2018

    This mission is a bit longer than the Okutsu and Longuski mission but it has a much lower outbound delta V than any of the other missions and a bit lower incoming velocity than either mission. The Foster and Daniels mission deserves a much closer look as the large decrease in outbound delta V, (4.19 vs 4.86) could be huge in reducing launch vehicle cost.

    ... The improvements in trajectories, orbit timing, and flybys have the promise to dramatically improve the possibility of success for the Inspiration Mars mission. Beyond that they bring further flyby opportunities for the Moon, Venus, and Mars all on the same flight! Thus it is strongly urged that the Inspiration Mars team continue to improve their trajectory work as the gains to be had contribute materially to the success of the mission.

    Other thoughts are is that it is clear that a single launch solution is not viable, even with a Falcon heavy. It is also clear that it is pretty much not possible to stuff all the spares, clothes, food, water, thermal protection, and other things that are required either in the Dragon or the inflatable that they showed in their press event in Washington. I thought about an inflatable as well but the problem with an inflatable is that you don't have the volume available until you are already up there and it inflates. Thus some type of hard module is going to be required.

    то, что предложили Тито и его команда можно назвать Version 1.0!
    Но версия 1.0 редко бывает работоспособной, чаще всего это, по сути, демо-версия ...
    Я думаю, вполне возможны версии 1.1, 1.2 и т.д. предложения Тито. Собственно, автор и указал, как к ним идти.
    Но я бы предпочел Version 2! И мне кажется, к ней надо идти от проекта Lin
    Lin, а у вас есть мысли о версии 2.0 своего проекта?

    Сейчас с ностальгией вспоминаю тот романтический настрой, да и ошибки в баллистике вижу (вернее так – есть подозрение, что там присутствует ошибка - на маневр у Венеры топливо не тратится, программа просто выдавала dV грав. маневра).
     Первый вариант комплекса .
    Обратите внимание на надувные модули и сравните с картинкой в проекте Денниса Тито  :)  , да и экипаж в моих фантазиях был тоже из двух человек (мы с женой, конечно  :)  ).
     Ещё один вариант комплекса - он появился в процессе обсуждения.
     Характеристики (на несколько сообщений ниже – правильные ).
    И итоговый вариант + короткий рассказ о проекте .
    Надувные модули убраны, так как возникли сомнения в возможности быстрой отработки.
    Жилой объем значительно больше, чем в проекте Тито.

    В моих фантазиях старт должен был состояться 1 января 2025 года, Тито оказался ещё более оптимистичен.
    Увы, поскольку я не миллиардер (и даже не миллионер), о "венеролёте Лина" СМИ не писали  :D
    Inspiration Mars: Some Thoughts About Their Plan
     Полный текст: http://spaceref.com/news/viewnews.html?id=1700

    Несколько фрагментов:
    ... I am not interested in comparing the Inspiration Mars (IM) plan to NASA's plans but to focus on
    !!! what could be done to improve that mission. !!!
    ... In the engineering world it is always more efficient to see what others have done before you run off to redo the work.

    There is a 2002 paper from the Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets by Okutsu and Longuski entitled Mars Free Returns via Gravity Assist From Venus . This paper is interesting as it examines the free return trajectory as an abort scenario for a NASA mission to Mars. Using an Earth to Venus to Mars to Earth (EVME) flyby they obtained the following numbers

    *    475 Day Mission + >10 for the Aerocapture/reentry
    *   A delta V excess of 4.43 km sec at departure
    *   Return Velocity of 13.94 km/sec
    *   March 24, 2017 departure
    *   Venus Flyby Date?
    *   March 9, 2018 Mars Arrival
    *   Return Date July 11, 2018

    *   493 Day Mission + >10 for the Aerocapture/reentry
    *   A delta V excess of 4.19 km sec at departure
    *   Return Velocity of 13.8 km/sec
    *   April 6, 2017 departure
    *   Venus Flyby Date?
    *   Mars Flyby Date?
    *   Return Date August 22, 2018

    Inspiration Mars: Some Thoughts About Our Plan, Mike Loucks, John Carrico and Dennis Tito
    "Dennis Wingo provided some comments for us in his article Inspiration Mars: Some Thoughts About Their Plan.
    Dennis Wingo is a friend of ours. We welcome input from any source, especially visionaries like Dennis.
    Our IEEE Paper is an attempt to show the feasibility of the simplest possible Mars flyby mission. We chose a simple Mars flyby trajectory (the one from the Patel reference), and will choose a simple ECLSS, heat shield, etc., using existing designs and technologies on a single launch.
    !!! We may eventually deviate from these assumptions, but only when we have proven that we must."
