SES Selects Arianespace to Launch EAGLE-1 Satellite for Europe's Quantum Cryptography
EAGLE-1 satellite for ESA's end-to-end Quantum Key Distribution system to launch on the Vega-C rocket from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana in 2024.

Paris/Luxembourg – The EAGLE-1 satellite, which will support the end-to-end secure Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) system for Europe, will be launched for SES by Arianespace on a Vega C rocket from French Guiana as early as Q4 2024. The satellite will be placed into Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The EAGLE-1 project comprising satellite and ground infrastructure, is developed by SES and its consortium of 20 European partners, with the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Commission support.
Arianespace and SES logosUnder the recently-signed agreement with ESA, SES and its partners will design, develop, launch and operate a satellite-based end-to-end QKD system for the purpose of testing and validating space-based secure transmission of cryptographic keys. The first European sovereign space-based QKD system will include the dedicated low earth orbit (LEO) EAGLE-1 satellite and state-of-the-art QKD operations centre in Luxembourg. In the scope of EuroQCI, the EAGLE-1 satellite will enable early access, validation, and integration of space-based QKD for EU Member States.
"Building the EAGLE-1 end-to-end system for secure data transmission and validating the long-distance Quantum Key Distribution technology is an innovative project that will benefit the EU Member States," said Ruy Pinto, Chief Technology Officer at SES. "We have been working with Arianespace for decades to deliver our satellites into space and are delighted for them to be onboard to launch the EAGLE-1 satellite into orbit."

Following the launch, the EAGLE-1 satellite will complete three years of in-orbit mission supported by the European Commission. During this operational phase, the satellite will allow European Union governments and institutions, as well as critical business sectors, early access to long-distance QKD that would path the way towards an EU constellation enabling ultra-secure data transmissions.
The EAGLE-1 project is co-funded by the ESA contribution of Germany, Luxembourg, Austria, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, and the Czech Republic under ARTES, as well as the European Commission through Horizon Europe.
Vega C, the new European light launcher, successfully passed its inaugural flight on July 13 and now enters its operational phase under the responsibility of Arianespace. With this contract, Vega C backlog includes over 40 satellites contracts.
Vega C development program has been managed by ESA with 12 Member States of the Agency. Avio Spa (Colleferro, Italy) is the industrial prime of the Vega launch system. Vega C has been upgraded with more powerful first and second stage Solid Rocket Motors and with a larger fairing, which significantly increases payload mass and double allowable volume as compared to Vega. The launcher also better meets the specific needs of small spacecraft, thanks to its improved SSMS dispenser and to its AVUM+ that allows seven re-ignitions instead of five. Vega C can thus deliver to three different separation orbits for its multiple payloads within the same mission, instead of the two previously possible with Vega.

Due to a defective equipment that needs to be replaced on the launcher, Flight #VV22 is being postponed.
The #VegaC launch vehicle and the two #PléiadesNeo satellites are in safe conditions.
A new launch date, in December, will be shared as soon as possible.

Целью миссии является выведение на орбиту метеорологического спутника MTG-I1 для Европейской организации спутниковой метеорологии и двух геостационарных спутников связи Galaxy 35 и Galaxy 36
ПАРИЖ, 13 декабря. /ТАСС/. Ракета-носитель Ariane 5 с одним научным и двумя телекоммуникационными спутниками на борту стартовала с космодрома Куру. Трансляция ведется на сайте компании - оператора запусков Arianespace.
В ходе миссии VA259 на орбиту будут выведены метеорологический спутник нового поколения MTG-I1 для Европейской организации спутниковой метеорологии и два геостационарных спутника связи Galaxy 35 и Galaxy 36 компании Intelsat.
По словам специалистов, аппарат MTG-I1 должен способствовать "быстрому выявлению и прогнозированию опасных погодных явлений". Он также будет использоваться для точного мониторинга лесных пожаров, для помощи воздушным судам обходить грозовые фронты или же для раннего предсказания наводнений. Первые данные спутник MTG-I1 начнет предоставлять через шесть месяцев. Как отмечают эксперты, MTG-I1 стал первым европейским космическим аппаратом, оснащенным детектором молний.
Спутники Galaxy 35 и Galaxy 36 будут обеспечивать связь над Северной Америкой, в том числе использоваться для трансляции крупных спортивных и развлекательных событий.

ЦитироватьПАРИЖ, 21 декабря. /ТАСС/. Запуск европейской легкой ракеты-носителя Vega-C, который был осуществлен с космодрома Куру во французской Гвиане, завершился неудачей. Об этом сообщила в среду компания - оператор запусков Arianespace в Twitter.
"Примерно через 2 минуты 27 секунд после старта произошел сбой [работы двигателя] Zefiro 40, что положило конец миссии Vega-C, - говорится в сообщении. - В настоящее время проводится анализ данных, чтобы установить причины".
Ракета должна была вывести на орбиту спутники дистанционного зондирования Земли Pleiades Neo 5 и Pleiades Neo 6.
Vega-C является новой версией ракеты легкого класса Vega, которая используется с 2012 года. Новая ракета высотой 35 м (на 5 м выше предыдущей версии) способна вывести около 2,2 т груза на полярную орбиту высотой 700 км.

Daniel Neuenschwander, ESA director of space transportation, says that because the Vega C failure involves it second stage, it may be possible to return to flight first with Vega (which uses a different second stage) before Vega C.

CAS, ESA, Arianespace & Airbus recently completed the integration test of SMILE with Vega-C rocket adapter. More tests with European payloads planned in the year & the Mission-Critical Design Review in June. If everything goes well, the launch will happen in April of 2025

ЦитироватьПАРИЖ, 3 марта. /ТАСС/. Европейское космическое агентство (ЕКА) планирует возобновить приостановленные после аварии в декабре пуски космической ракеты Vega-C в конце текущего года. Об этом проинформировала в пятницу пресс-служба ведомства.
Цитировать"Рабочая группа ЕКА и компании Arianespace приступила к реализации дорожной карты, предложенной комиссией по расследованию причин аварии 21 декабря <...> для надежного обеспечения возвращения к полетам ракет Vega-C. Ориентировочное время пуска - конец 2023 года", - отмечается в сообщении.
В ЕКА уточнили, что причиной аварии, произошедшей в конце прошлого года, стало повреждение горловины сопла. В компании отметили, что эта деталь "была закуплена итальянской компанией Avio на Украине".
Как подчеркнул генеральный директор ЕКА Йозеф Ашбахер, "независимая комиссия поддержала приверженность ЕКА высочайшим стандартам безопасности и предложила программу мер, которые позволят обеспечить надежное возвращение в эксплуатацию ракет Vega-C".

ЦитироватьПАРИЖ, 6 марта. /ТАСС/. Компания - оператор космических запусков Arianespace рассчитывает к 2025 году осуществлять ежегодно до 15 запусков с использованием новых ракет Ariane 6 и Vega C. Об этом сообщил генеральный директор предприятия Стефан Исраэль.
"Наши приоритеты четко определены: мы хотим как можно скорее осуществить запуски Ariane 6 и Vega C в полной надежности, <...> важно добиться стабильности производства. К 2025-2026 годам ежегодно придется запускать с десяток Ariane 6 и не менее четырех Vega C. Это вызов, тем более что может потребоваться увеличение темпов работы с учетом растущего спроса", - написал он в колонке для газеты Les Echos, опубликованной в понедельник.
Исраэль отметил, что в настоящее время компания получила 28 заказов на запуски Ariane 6, в том числе 18 - от компании Amazon для ее собственной группировки спутников Project Kuiper. Для Vega C уже сейчас имеется очередь из 13 заказов.
В то же время Исраэль признал, что переход на европейские модели оказался вынужденным после отмены 11 запусков российских ракет "Союз" с космодрома Куру во Французской Гвиане из-за введенных ЕС санкций. Упомянув колоссальную разницу в объемах финансирования по сравнению с конкурентами, глава европейского оператора выразил надежду на то, что правительства стран ЕС найдут возможность компенсировать гиперинфляцию, с которой сталкиваются компании в отрасли.

Единственный коммерческий запуск Vega C в декабре 2022 года окончился неудачей. Согласно опубликованному 3 марта отчету Европейского космического агентства (ЕКА), причиной стало повреждение горловины сопла двигателя второй ступени Zefiro 40, произведенной на Украине по заказу итальянской компании Avio. Запуски Vega C планируется возобновить только в конце нынешнего года. Последние две миссии с использованием ракеты Ariane 5 должны состояться до конца лета. Запуск Ariane 6, по словам Исраэля, "не состоится до конца этого года".
Однако с учетом уже имеющегося портфеля заказов генеральный директор Arianespace назвал два будущих носителя успешными и выразил надежду на то, что в ближайшее десятилетие компания получит доступ к технологиям двигателей и ступеней многоразового использования. "Развертывание европейской группировки спутников и полет европейского астронавта с космодрома Куру - это новые рубежи для Ariane 6 и последующих ракет-носителей", - добавил он.
