Mohit Sharma By ELE Times News
October 4, 2021

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), which has had a negligible year so far as launch missions go, is hoping to launch three Earth Observation Satellites (EOSs) in the last quarter of 2021.
While two of them — EOS-4 (Risat-1A) and EOS-6 (Oceansat-3) — will be launched using Isro's workhorse PSLV, the third one, EOS-2 (Microsat), will be launched in the first developmental flight of the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV), marking the beginning of a new class of launch vehicles in India.
Isro has completed SSLV Payload Fairing (SPLF) functional qualification test successfully and other testing activities are in progress. EOS-4 was to be originally launched in September, sources in Isro said, adding that the review committee had not cleared the satellite, which postponed the launch.
Isro chairman K Sivan told "The plan is to achieve those launches by the end of this year, but since we would be using some key indigenous systems like TR module, TWTA and circulators as part of our endeavour to reduce imports, we will be carrying out extensive tests to find if there are any technical issues. This may take some time."
TR modules refer to transmit and receive modules that help in telemetry and tracking of the satellites, while TWTA (Traveling Wave Tube Amplifiers) are commonly used in satellite communication links, earth observation payloads, scientific missions or probes, inter-spacecraft communications links etc. Isro has been looking at indigenising various technologies aimed at reducing imports.
New Model
Further, Sivan said that the launch of EOS-4 would also mark the beginning of a new model for Isro as intended by the space reforms initiated by the Centre.
"...Earlier, we had a supply driven model. After Isro made a satellite, we offered it to ministries and government agencies. Now, even Isro is looking at a demand-driven model. From the next satellite, we will be doing this," he said.
The three satellites that the space agency is planning to launch are meant for ministries like agriculture, home affairs, earth sciences and environment and forests.
Unlike communication satellites where the entire capacity could be demanded by one customer, a single Earth observation satellite can simultaneously cater to multiple customers as the data generated by these satellites can be analysed for different uses.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), India's space agency, is targeting the launch of first of the two planned uncrewed flights under the Gaganyaan mission before Independence Day this year and the third lunar mission Chandrayaan-3 by "middle of the next year", said the chairperson Dr K Sivan on Monday.

"If you look at the immediate task at hand this year, we have many missions to execute. Some of these are launch of EOS-4 and EOS-6 on board PSLV. Launch of EOS-02 on board maiden flight of SSLV. Many test flights for Crew Escape System of Gaganyaan and Launch of the first unmanned mission of Gaganyaan. In addition, we also have Chandrayaan-03, Aditya Ll, XpoSat, IRNSS and technology demonstration missions with advanced indigenously developed technologies on-board," Sivan said in the letter encouraging the scientists at the organisation, posted on the agency's website.

There is a directive to launch the first unmanned mission before the 75th anniversary of India's independence (August 15, 2022) and all the stake-holders are putting their best effort to meet the schedule. I am sure that we will be able to meet this target, Sivan said in the letter.

The chairperson also gave updates on the most anticipated missions. "Chandrayaan-3 design changes incorporating and testing has seen huge progress. The mission could be launched by middle of next year," he said.

The launch of the three earth observation satellites – EOS-02, EOS-04, and EOS-06 have been delayed for several months now. All big-ticket scientific missions, including India's first solar mission Aditya-L1, which were to take place in 2021 were pushed when the launch schedule was revised after the second wave of the pandemic.

"All indicators point towards the next imminent wave. All of us have to prepared and protect ourselves both at the personnel level as well as at the institutional level to safeguard the ongoing programmes and activities," he said in his message.

ЦитироватьISRO Planning Multiple Missions In 2022 Including Chandrayaan-3 And Aditya-L1: Union Minister Jitendra Singh
by Swarajya Staff - Jan 14, 2022 05:59 AM

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is planning multiple missions in 2022, including India's third lunar mission, Chandrayaan-3, and first solar mission Aditya L1.
Further, the Indian space agency will also launch the several Earth Observation satellites this year.
"ISRO is planning multiple missions in 2022 like Chandrayaan-03, Aditya L1, XpoSaT, IRNSS and technology demonstration missions with advanced indigenously developed technologies EOS-04 & EOS-06 onboard PSLV," said Union Minister of State for Science and Technology and Space Jitendra Singh.

Earlier in December 2021, Singh had informed the Parliament that the Chandrayaan-3, India's third lunar mission, is in the advanced stages of realisation and it is targeted to be launched in the second quarter of financial year 2022-23.
In a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha, Singh had said, "Chandrayaan-3 is in advanced stage of realisation. All the systems in both Propulsion Module and Rover Module have been realized, integrated and tested".
"In the Lander Module, most of the systems have been realised and tests are under progress," Singh said.
"Chandrayaan-3 is targeted to be launched in the second quarter of financial year 2022-2023," the minister added.
Meanwhile, Aditya L1 is India's first space mission to study the sun. The Aditya L1 satellite will be inserted in a halo orbit around the L1, which is 1.5 million km from the Earth. The satellite will carry additional six payloads with enhanced science scope and objectives.
A satellite placed in the halo orbit around the Lagrangian point 1 (L1) of the Sun-Earth system has the major advantage of continuously viewing the Sun without any occultation/eclipses.
Aditya-L1 with its payloads will provide observations of Sun's Corona (soft and hard X-ray, Emission lines in the visible and NIR), Chromosphere (UV) and photosphere (broadband filters).
In addition, the mission's particle payloads will study the particle flux emanating from the Sun and reaching the L1 orbit, and the magnetometer payload will measure the variation in magnetic field strength at the halo orbit around L1, according to the ISRO.

ЦитироватьRecently, ISRO chairman Dr K Sivan highlighted 2022 plans in his New Year statement. Here is a quick look at the missions likely to be launched this year!
Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV): Scheduled for launch in the first quarter of 2022, the SSLV has been built to carry a 500 kg payload to an altitude of 500 km. SSLV is a three-stage, all-solid vehicle to carry multiple satellite-like nano, micro and small ones.
About 160 crores have been sanctioned for the development of this project. SSLV would help to meet the demand of the global launch services market for small satellites.
RISAT-1A (EOS-4): The radar imaging satellite will likely be launched in early 2022. It will be the sixth in the series of RISAT satellites developed by ISRO. The remote sensing satellite has been built to map terrains and study Earth's different land areas and oceans.

Aditya L1: ISRO plans to launch its maiden mission to study the magnificent Sun by the middle of 2022. The solar mission, named Aditya-L1, was earlier slated for the first half of 2020 but was pushed to this new slot due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Announced way back in 2008, this is the first mission designated by ISRO to study the Sun's atmosphere.
ISRO has selected L1, or Lagrangian point 1, between the Earth and the Sun to place the Aditya satellite. The spacecraft will travel a long journey of 1.5 million km from the Earth for this task. It will conduct comprehensive research on the processes that occur in the Sun's atmosphere, which would enable us to decipher the outstanding problems in solar physics.
Chandrayaan 3: The ambitious Moon mission successor will likely be launched during the third quarter of 2022, assuming normal workflow continues. The third lunar mission was also scheduled for the second half of 2020. In its second attempt, the space agency is aiming to achieve a soft landing on the south pole of the lunar surface, which is the least explored region of the Moon to date. Unlike its predecessor, Chandrayaan 3 will not carry an orbiter—but will include a lander and a rover to study the lunar surface.
Gaganyaan: ISRO is also preparing to launch its first unmanned mission under the Gaganyaan mission in 2022. The first crewed Gaganyaan mission is likely to be launched in 2023—thus making India the fourth nation in the world to do so after the US, Russia and China.
Two crewless flights are scheduled before the maiden human spaceflight launch by the Indian space agency. In one of the crewless flights, ISRO has planned to send a humanoid robot named Vyommitra to low-earth orbit. The robot will mimic the space crew activities set for the human flight mission in order to assess all the possible challenges prior to the final mission.
ISRO is also expected to launch other satellites like Oceansat-3 (EOS-6) and Microsat (EOS-2) in 2022. Dr Sivan also announced three new space science missions, which are in the pipeline namely DISHA (a twin aeronomy satellite mission), TRISHNA (for accurate mapping of land surface temperatures), and lastly, a Venus mission.

ЦитироватьWhile giving the timelines of the new launches to space minister Jitendra Singh in Delhi on Tuesday, the Isro chairman mentioned a RISAT-1A satellite launch with PSLV C52 rocket scheduled for February, OCEANSAT-3, INS2B and ANAND satellite launches by PSLV C-53 in March and SSLV-D1 launching a microSAT in April.
This year, Isro also has the distinction of launching Gsat-21, the first fully-funded satellite of New Space India Ltd (NSIL) that will be owned and operated be owned and operated by the public sector undertaking. This communication satellite will meet direct to home (DTH) application needs of the country.

While Risat-1A is a remote sensing satellite that will boost the country's border security, Oceansat-3 is a ocean-observation satellite and INS2B is a satellite belonging to Bhutan developed by a group of Bhutanese engineers trained by Isro.
ANAND satellite is the first satellite of Indian startup Pixxel's Firefly fleet of earth observation satellites, which will help detect, monitor and predict global phenomena in real-time. MicroSAT to be launched by India's first SSLV will be an experimental imaging satellite.
Somanath also updated Jitendra Singh about the status of the status of the Gaganyaan programme and said there had been a delay in timeline because of Covid and other constraints "but now things have again fallen back on track and all the systems needed for the first unmanned mission are getting realised", a statement from the Department of Space said. Before the final manned mission in 2023, Isro is planning to launch two unmanned missions, the second one will carry a 'vyommitra (humanoid)', before the final mission involving two or three gagannauts to space for seven days.

ЦитироватьAfter several delays due to the coronavirus pandemic and successive lockdowns, the Indian Space & Research Organisation (Isro) is picking up pace as it gets its new chief in Dr S Somnath. The senior rocket scientists said that the space agency will conduct five major satellite launches in the coming three months, as he briefed the Minister of Science & Technology Dr Jitendra Singh.

The Isro chairman presented a brief about the forthcoming missions during the next three months, which include a RICAT-1A PSLV C5-2 launch scheduled for February this year, followed by the launch of OCEANSAT-3 and INS 2B ANAND PSLV C-53 in March, and SSLV-D1 Micro SAT in April 2022.
Meanwhile, Isro will also launch GSAT-21, the first fully funded satellite by the New Space India Limited (NSIL). The communication satellite will be developed and operated by NSIL to meet the Direct to Home (DTH) application needs.
Following the meeting, the minister said that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, space programmes have been given a special impetus and space technology has now been made applicable in different sectors including roads and highways, railways, healthcare, agriculture. "During the next few years, India's ascent to the top will be heralded via the Space route," the minister said.

GAGANYAAN: DELAYED, BUT BACK ON TRACK
Briefing the minister on India's maiden manned mission Gaganyaan, Somnath said that there had been a delay in the timeline because of the Covid-19 and other constraints, but now things have again fallen back on track and all the systems needed for the first unmanned mission are being readied.
Isro is planning to launch the first uncrewed mission under Gaganyaan in 2022, following which the second unmanned mission "Vyommitra" will carry a robot and this will then be followed by the manned mission. The Isro chairman said that the selected Indian astronauts have successfully undergone Generic Space Flight Training in Russia and an ad-hoc astronaut training centre has also been established at Bengaluru.
The Isro chief further said that the preparations for the manned mission involve in-flight demonstration of the Crew Escape System functioning in the lower atmosphere (less than 10 Kms). The exercise recovery of the crew module after impacting the sea is also being worked out.
After being appointed as Isro chief for a term of three years, the senior scientist said that India needed new players in the space sector to make "economically viable programmes". Somanath, who served as the director of Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) in Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram, was instrumental in the development of the GSLV Mk-III launcher and was a team leader for the Integration of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) during the early phases of his career.
"My best wishes to him for taking over a prestigious assignment at an eventful time when India is heading for its first Human Space mission"Gaganyaan" &other historic breakthroughs," Dr Jitendra Singh tweeted after the meeting.
