Isro was to carry out the first unmanned flight of the human-rated GSLV Mk III and the country's first solar mission, Aditya L1, in December, according to the revised schedule.

The Indian Space Research Organisation's (Isro) big-ticket launches planned towards the end of this year are likely to be delayed after the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic impacted the timeline, people aware of the matter said on Wednesday.
After the first wave of the pandemic last year, a committee of the space agency reviewed all pending missions to reschedule them. Isro was to carry out the first unmanned flight of the human-rated GSLV Mk III and the country's first solar mission, Aditya L1, in December, according to the revised schedule.
"The decision on the new timelines for the missions is awaited," an official from the agency said on condition of anonymity. Another official said the missions were likely to be delayed beyond their schedule.
Last year, the space missions were impacted by the inability to move equipment and parts from across the country during the lockdown necessitated by the pandemic.
The third lunar mission, carrying aboard only a lander and rover, was initially slated for the end of 2020 or beginning of 2021, but has since been pushed to 2022. The government green-lit the third mission soon after the lander-rover of the Chandrayaan 2 mission crashed and lost communication just 2.1km from the surface.
The first unmanned Gaganyaan flight was initially planned for December 2020, the second for July 2021, and the first manned spaceflight was to happen by December 2021 ahead of the Prime Minister's deadline of Independence Day 2022.
Only three PSLV missions have been carried out since the pandemic began last year – the EOS-1 earth observation satellite mission in November, the CMS-1 communication satellite mission in December, and a mission carrying the Brazilian earth observation satellite as the main payload in February.
The launch of GISAT 1, an earth imaging satellite, was postponed in March last year after technical issues following which it was scheduled for March this year but is yet to happen.

ISRO Postpones First Human Rated Test Flight for Gaganyaan Mission Due to COVID-19 Lockdown
By IANS10 hours agoTWC India

The first test flight of Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-Mk III (GSLV Mk III) that is expected to carry the Indian astronauts to space will not happen this year owing to the COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdown.
"Owing to the spread of coronavirus infection and the lockdowns across the countries, vendors are working at a lower capacity or closed which in turn has impacted the supply of components. Even our officials are working from home due to the lockdown," K. Sivan, Chairman, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Secretary, Department of Space told IANS.
He also said most of the design and documentation activities have been completed for the rocket. Pointing out ISRO opening the year 2021 with the successful launch of Brazilian satellite Amazonia-1 and 18 other satellites, he said the spread of COVID-19 and lockdowns curtailed the operations.
The first human-rated unmanned GSLV-Mk III, the first of the two test flights, was scheduled to fly by the end of 2021. Taking the flight results another unmanned rocket would fly while the third rocket will carry the Indian astronauts.
"Major design and documentation activities for the Ganganyaan project have been completed," Sivan added.
An ISRO official had earlier told IANS that the crew module is under development and orders for 80 per cent of the hardware have been placed.
According to the official, the static tests of the rocket's solid-fuel motor are slated this September and liquid fuel engines will also be tested. Meanwhile, the four Indian astronauts returned to India this March after completing their training in Russia and will undergo different space mission-specific training in the country.
Sivan also said ISRO is waiting to launch India's first Geo Imaging Satellite (GISAT-1) to be placed in geostationary orbit.

Queried about launching the satellite using foreign rockets like Ariane of Arianespace as there is an opportunity cost involved with a fully built satellite on the ground Sivan said: "Only China and the US are launching rockets. Others are not. Anyway, we have our own rocket to launch."
He said once the COVID-19 spread comes down, the satellite will be launched.
The satellite and the rocket (Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle - F10 (GSLV-F10) is ready at the rocket launch centre in Sriharikota. The GISAT-1 will be the country's first sky eye or earth observation satellite to be placed in geostationary orbit.
Originally the GISAT-1 was slated for launch on March 5, 2020, but hours before the launch ISRO announced the postponement of the mission owing to some technical glitch.
Soon after the COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdown delayed the mission. The rocket had to be dismantled and cleaned up.
Subsequently, the GISAT-1 launch was slated for March 2021 but due to problems in the satellite's battery side, the flight got delayed and the battery was replaced.
The Indian space agency had earlier said the 2,268 kg GISAT-1 would provide a real-time image of a large area of the region of interest at frequent intervals. It will also enable quick monitoring of natural disasters, episodic events and any short-term events.

Times of India.

Marfa Fedoroa

India's ISRO or Indian Space Research Organization will be launching a Bhutanese satellite in December 2021. The satellite is being built by 4 Bhutanese engineers who are being trained by ISRO, with the first phase already over.
Ambassador of India to Bhutan Ruchira Kamboj said, "Our 2 countries are collaborating to build a satellite...this satellite is going to be launched in 2021 from ISRO's facilities". She highlighted, that it is "only natural that these 2 best friends are cooperating in this final frontier".
She was speaking at an event "Space odyssey: showcasing India's achievements in space technology" organised by the Indian embassy in Bhutan as part of India's 75th year of Independence--Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. The 4 Bhutanese engineers were also present at the occasion. The engineers completed 2 months of training at ISRO's UR Rao Satellite center in February and in the second phase of training will put the finishing touches on the satellite they are building.

R Umamaheswaran, Scientific Secretary, ISRO who was the keynote speaker at the event making a mention of the Bhutanese satellite that is being developed said, it "will fly hopefully by end of this year in PSLV mission, that is what we are planning".
India and Bhutan have engagement in space cooperation with a ground Earth station for South Asia Satellite being inaugurated in Thimphu during PM Modi's August 2019 Bhutan visit. Ground Earth station was built with the help of ISRO. In 2017 India launched the South Asia satellite project with all countries barring Pakistan part of it. Under the project, New Delhi has offered to increase bandwidth on an additional transponder on the satellite for Bhutan as a gift as per the country's requirement.

Four ISRO launches over next 5 months; Gaganyaan delayed, Centre tells LS
The four upcoming launches include three using India's workhorse Polar Satellite Launch Vehicles (PSLV), according to government's reply in the Lok Sabha
By Anonna Dutt
UPDATED ON AUG 05, 2021 01:17 AM IST

New Delhi: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will conduct four launches over the next five months, including the maiden flight of its new small satellite launch vehicle. The much-awaited first uncrewed flight under the Gaganyaan mission, however, is no longer on the cards, the government told the Lok Sabha.
The space agency had to reassess the timelines for all its missions due to the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. Prior to that, India was to conduct the first uncrewed flight under the Gaganyaan mission by December 2021.
The four upcoming launches include three using India's workhorse Polar Satellite Launch Vehicles (PSLV), according to a reply in the Lok Sabha. All the four missions will carry on board earth observation satellites, which are used for monitoring agricultural activities and natural disasters among others.
So far, there has only been one launch this year in February when PSLV C51 carried the Brazilian Earth Observation Satellite Amazonia-1 to space in a commercial launch. The vehicle also carried 18 co-passengers – 13 satellites from the US, one from the defence research and development organisation (DRDO), a three-satellite combination from a university consortium, and an experimental nano-satellite developed by students.

HT had previously reported that the launch of EOS-3 is likely by mid-August. "The dates will be confirmed closer to the launch," said an official from the space agency.
The first development flight of the small satellite launch vehicle (SSLV) is likely to happen in the last quarter of the year. ISRO inducts a launch vehicle in its operation fleet after two successful development flights. The SSLV, which was mainly developed for commercial launch of small satellites, costs only R 30 crore as compared to Rs120 crore for PSLV. It can be assembled by a team of six within seven days in comparison to a team of 600 that takes a couple of months to assemble a PSLV.
Ajay Lele, a senior fellow at Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses, had earlier said that there was a need to carry out the commercial missions such as small satellite launch vehicle demonstration as soon as possible as customer satellites already purchased slots for launch.
"The scientific missions can wait for some time. If India does not provide launch services there is a likelihood that they might go to other launch providers," he said.

INSPIRESat-1 CubeSat, developed under the International Satellite Program in Research and Education (INSPIRE), is ready for launch, the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) has said.
The small satellite that weighs less than 10 kg will be launched aboard an upcoming Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) mission of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
INSPIRESat-1 is a collaborative effort by the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) at the University of Colorado Boulder in the U.S., the National Central University, Taiwan, and the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, apart from the IIST.
The satellite, which will be placed in a low earth orbit, is equipped with a Compact Ionosphere Probe for studying the earth's ionosphere. A constellation of earth and space-weather observation satellites is envisaged under the INSPIRE programme.
IIST role
IIST students were responsible for the design and development of the onboard computer and the electrical power supply for INSPIRESat-1.
S. Somanath, director, IIST, and the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), said on Saturday said that INSPIRESat-1 has been fully integrated, tested and is awaiting launch on a PSLV mission.
''It gave the IIST students hands-on experience in the areas of design, development and also miniaturisation since these are small satellites,'' said Y.V.N. Krishna Murthy, Registrar, IIST. The students also gained valuable experience from the global collaboration.

India's first solar mission, which was pushed from early 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, is likely to be launched in the third quarter of 2022, when the country's second space observatory Xposat, aimed at helping astronomers study cosmic sources such as pulsars and supernova, will also be launched, senior officials from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said.

Talking about the purely scientific missions at a conference this week, director of human spaceflight centre, Dr Unnikrishnan Nair, said, "The solar mission Aditya L1 will be launched in the third quarter of next year (2022) and will provide more insights into the origin of the universe and many other unknowns."
...
Xposat will be the other purely scientific mission that the space agency will undertake next year. It will be launched aboard a small satellite launch vehicle, which is currently in the development phase. The new launch vehicle is likely to have its first development flight by December this year. ISRO qualifies a launch vehicle to be mission-ready after two successful development flights.
"Xposat will allow us to study the polarisation of celestial events. It will be launched by an SSLV which is under development. The first development flight will be by the end of this year. Academicians are looking forward to the data generated from this mission," said Nair.
The SSLV, which is being developed for the commercial launch of small satellites, costs only ₹30 crore as compared to ₹120 crore for a polar satellite launch vehicle (PSLV). The SSLV can be assembled by a team of six scientists within seven days in comparison to a team of 600 that takes a couple of months to assemble a PSLV.
The Covid-19 pandemic severely affected the number of launches ISRO could undertake in 2020 and 2021. There has been a total of just four launches in the two years, of which, one was a purely commercial launch with the main payload being an earth observation satellite from Brazil called Amazonia-1.
Before the pandemic, the space agency had planned for 20 launches in the financial year 2020-21, including the first unmanned flight under the Gaganyaan mission. The Gaganyaan mission is also likely to be undertaken by the end of 2022 or in early 2023.
