NASA's Lueders, on certifying SpaceX's Crew Dragon:

"The big chunk of the certification is in the upgrades" following the Demo-2 mission.

@HansKoenigsmann on potentially flying more than four crew members on other missions: Will evaluate in the future after we get more data flying four crew members.

NASA's Bridenstine: The Crew-1 astronauts will be on board the ISS when Boeing's OFT-2 Starliner mission arrives, "so we're going to have two independent companies with very unique solutions that achieve spaceflight and docking at the International Space Station."

Lueders calls the scheduled 2:40 am launch time "early in the morning." [Might be "late in the night" for some.]

Jim Bridenstine says it's still "critically important" to have mixed crews (cosmonauts on commercial crew vehicles, astronauts on Soyuz), but that hasn't happened yet; "we will get there."

Lueders says they should finalize the "last few pieces" of the certification plan in the next week to 10 days, although the "final final" certification will come at the flight readiness review a week before the Crew-1 launch.

@KathyLueders says that the Loss of Crew (LOC) number for Crew Dragon in the Commercial Crew program is 1 out of 276.

Lueders emphasizes that despite the discussion of the heat shield and other issues, everything else with Demo-2 went well.

That ends the first of three briefings; second, on Crew-1 specifically, is in a half-hour.

On to the Crew-1 briefing. Steve Stich, NASA commercial crew manager, notes this mission will set the record for the longest time a US spacecraft has been docked in orbit (current record is the Apollo spacecraft on the final Skylab mission.)

Marcia Smith @SpcPlcyOnline 9 мин. назад

Stitch-spacecraft will be docked 210 days, longest in-space duration for any U.S. crew spacecraft.  84 days was previous record [Apollo spacecraft docked to Skylab].

SpaceX's Benji Reed says SpaceX planning 7 Dragon missions (3 crew, 4 cargo) in next 14 months. Doesn't seem to include any private astronaut missions.

Benji Reed of SpaceX says company is prepared to fly three crew missions over the next year, allowing each Dragon crew to hand off to the next arriving crew. That means Crew-2 likely in spring, 2021, and Crew-3 in the fall.

Chances of getting favorable weather and smooth seas for landing on any given day during Demo-2 were 1-in-7, says @Enterprise_Flt. Thanks to hardware improvements, the favorable weather chances for Crew-1 return is now 1-in-4.

SpaceX's Reed says he's not sure how many Dragon spacecraft will be needed for the 7 crew/cargo missions in next 14 months; some will be reused. As for private astronaut missions, see the first "late next year."

SpaceX and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) join NASA in giving an overview of the Crew-1 mission, the first crew rotational flight of a U.S. commercial spacecraft to the International Space Station. NASA astronauts Victor Glover, Mike Hopkins, and Shannon Walker will launch with JAXA astronaut Soichi Noguchi aboard the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket out of Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Oct. 31 at 2:40 a.m. EDT.

SpaceX training of astronauts that will fly on board Dragon's first operational mission is complete! When the crew arrives for pre-launch preparations at the launch site, they will participate in a run-through of day-of-launch activities with the launch and pad operations teams

I asked NASA astronaut Shannon Walker, the second mission specialist on SpaceX Crew-1, how training with the company differed than when she flew on a Soyuz in 2010:

"The training is done in English."

39 мин. назад

Walker: "But actually, my experiences through my entire career, training to go into space on different spacecraft, is really the same." "It doesn't matter where in the world we're training for which spacecraft ... the basics of training for spaceflight are about the same."

30 мин. назад

NASA astronaut Shannon Walker also noted that a Crew-1 task on the ISS will be a "port relocation" of Crew Dragon, as Boeing's Starliner capsule will need to use the dock that SpaceX's capsule will be in when the latter arrives for OFT-2.
