Artemis

America has entered a new era of exploration. NASA's Artemis program will lead humanity forward to the Moon and prepare us for the next giant leap, the exploration of Mars. It has been almost 50 years since astronauts last walked on the lunar surface during the Apollo program, and since then the robotic exploration of deep space has seen decades of technological advancement and scientific discoveries. For the last 20 years, humans have continuously lived and worked aboard the International Space Station 250 miles above Earth, preparing for the day we move farther into the solar system.

NASA Publishes Artemis Plan to Land First Woman, Next Man on Moon in 2024

Following a series of critical contract awards and hardware milestones, NASA has shared an update on its Artemis program, including the latest Phase 1 plans to land the first woman and the next man on the surface of the Moon in 2024.

In the 18 months since NASA accepted a bold challenge to accelerate its exploration plans by more than four years and establish sustainable exploration by the end of the decade, the agency has continued to gain momentum toward sending humans to the Moon again for the first time since the last Apollo lunar mission in 1972.

"With bipartisan support from Congress, our 21st century push to the Moon is well within America's reach," said NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine. "As we've solidified more of our exploration plans in recent months, we've continued to refine our budget and architecture. We're going back to the Moon for scientific discovery, economic benefits, and inspiration for a new a generation of explorers. As we build up a sustainable presence, we're also building momentum toward those first human steps on the Red Planet."

In its formal plan, NASA captures Artemis progress to date, identifying the key science, technology and human missions, as well as the commercial and international partnerships that will ensure we continue to lead in exploration and achieve our ambitious goal to land astronauts on the Moon.

The agency's powerful new rocket, the Space Launch System (SLS), and the Orion spacecraft are closer than ever to their first integrated launch. The spacecraft is complete while the core stage and its attached four engines are undergoing a final series of tests that will culminate in a critical hot fire test this fall.

Early Artemis Missions

Following a successful hot fire test, the core stage will be shipped to the agency's Kennedy Space Center in Florida for integration with the spacecraft. NASA will launch an SLS and an Orion together on two flight tests around the Moon to check performance, life support, and communication capabilities. The first mission – known as Artemis I – is on track for 2021 without astronauts, and Artemis II will fly with crew in 2023.

In the Phase 1 plan, NASA notes additional details about conducting a new test during the Artemis II mission – a proximity operations demonstration. Shortly after Orion separates from the interim cryogenic propulsion stage, astronauts will manually pilot Orion as they approach and back away from the stage. This demonstration will assess Orion's handling qualities and related hardware and software to provide performance data and operational experience that cannot be readily gained on the ground in preparation for rendezvous, proximity operations, and docking, as well as undocking operations in lunar orbit beginning on Artemis III.

While preparing for and carrying out these flight test missions, NASA already will be back on the Moon robotically – using commercial delivery services to send dozens of new science investigations and technology demonstrations to the Moon twice per year beginning in 2021.

In 2024, Artemis III will be humanity's return to the surface of the Moon - landing the first astronauts on the lunar South Pole. After launching on SLS, astronauts will travel about 240,000 miles to lunar orbit aboard Orion, at which point they will directly board one of the new commercial human landing systems, or dock to the Gateway to inspect it and gather supplies before boarding the landing system for their expedition to the surface.

Wearing modern spacesuits that allow for greater flexibility and movement than those of their Apollo predecessors, astronauts will collect samples and conduct a range of science experiments over the course of nearly seven days. Using the lander, they will return to lunar orbit before ultimately heading home to Earth aboard Orion.

Work is progressing rapidly on the Gateway. NASA will integrate the first two components to launch – the power and propulsion element and the habitation and logistics outpost – in 2023. This foundation for the Gateway will be able to operate autonomously, conducting remote science experiments when astronauts are not aboard. NASA has selected the first two science instrument suites to conduct space weather investigations in lunar orbit before crew visits.

While NASA has not made a final decision to use the Gateway for Artemis III, Artemis IV and beyond will send crew aboard Orion to dock to the Gateway, where two crew members can stay aboard the spaceship in orbit while two go to the surface. Over time, the outpost will evolve, with new modules added by international partners, allowing crew members to conduct increasingly longer lunar missions.

As detailed in the agency's concept for surface sustainability earlier this year, an incremental buildup of infrastructure on the surface will follow later this decade, allowing for longer surface expeditions with more crew. That concept calls for an Artemis Base Camp that would include new rovers, power systems, habitats, and more on the surface for long-term exploration of the Moon.

Throughout the Artemis program, robots and humans will search for, and potentially extract, resources such as water that can be converted into other usable resources, including oxygen and fuel. By fine-tuning precision landing technologies as well as developing new mobility capabilities, astronauts will travel farther distances and explore new regions of the Moon.

WASHINGTON — The lunar lander under development by Dynetics for NASA's Artemis program will make use of in-space refueling of cryogenic propellants and require three launches in quick succession, company officials revealed.

In a Sept. 15 webinar held by Dynetics in cooperation with the American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics, the company discussed the overall architecture for the lander it is developing as part of NASA's Human Landing System (HLS) program. Dynetics is one of three companies that received HLS contracts from NASA in April for initial design studies of a lander that can transport astronauts to and from the lunar surface.

The Dynetics lander relies on in-space refueling to be able to carry out its mission. "Our lander is unique in that we need lunar fueling to accomplish our mission," said Kathy Laurini, the HLS payload and commercialization lead at Dynetics, during the webinar. "In the next couple years, we will take in-space cryogenic propellant refueling technologies from the lab to TRL 10 and operational." TRL, or technology readiness level, is a measure the maturity of a technology, and is usually measured on a scale of one to nine.

That refueling will initially be done by additional launches carrying propellant that is transferred to the lander. The lander will be launched on a United Launch Alliance Vulcan Centaur rocket. For the initial 2024 landing mission, Laurini said that launch will be followed by two additional Vulcan launches. Propellant from those rockets' Centaur upper stages will be transferred to the lander.

One challenge with this approach is with "boiloff," or loss of cryogenic propellants as they warm up. To address this, Dynetics plans to carry out the Vulcan Centaur launches on "14 to 20 day centers," or roughly two to three weeks apart, said Kim Doering, vice president of space systems at Dynetics. "We worked closely with NASA on our concept of operations, and the Orion plans, to ensure that our operational scenario is viable and feasible."

NASA makes push for full funding of Artemis human lunar lander program
by Jeff Foust — September 22, 2020

WASHINGTON — NASA used the release of a report on the Artemis program to seek full funding of the effort to return humans to the moon, warning that they had six months to secure its budget to keep a 2024 landing on schedule.

NASA published a report Sept. 21 outlining its lunar exploration plans, including an initial phase to return humans to the lunar surface by 2024 followed by a series of follow-up missions for what the agency calls "sustainable lunar exploration" and as a precursor for later human missions to Mars.

The report largely summarized existing plans, but included in an appendix a table outlining its budget requirements for implementing "Phase 1" of Artemis that goes through the Artemis 3 human lunar landing in 2024. NASA projected spending $28 billion from fiscal year 2021 through 2025 on just that first phase, a total that includes work on the Space Launch System, Orion, Exploration Ground Systems, the Human Landing System (HLS) landing program, and various supporting science and technology development efforts.

HLS is by far the largest program in that total, accounting for nearly $16.2 billion over the five-year period. Its funding is also the most in jeopardy, after the House passed an appropriations bill in July that provided the program with a little more than $600 million for fiscal year 2021, a fraction of the agency's request of more than $3.2 billion.

"It is critically important that we get that $3.2 billion," NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said in a call with reporters to discuss the report. He said he was "exceptionally grateful" that the House included at least some funding for HLS in its bill, but made it clear the agency needed full funding for HLS to keep plans for a human return to the moon by 2024 on track.

A final decision on funding for HLS, as well as the rest of NASA and the overall federal government, may still be months away.
...
The funding table in the report did not explicitly include work on the lunar Gateway. "A rapid return to the Moon requires the agency to minimize the number of systems involved with landing humans on the surface by 2024, so while future lunar landings will use the Gateway as a staging point in lunar orbit for missions to the surface, the agency's procurement for a commercially provided HLS left the door open for proposals that didn't use Gateway on early Artemis missions," the report stated.

Bridenstine said in the call that NASA still expected the first two elements of the Gateway, the Power and Propulsion Element (PPE) and Habitation and Logistics Outpost (HALO), to launch in late 2023 and be available to support the Artemis 3 mission in 2024. "We're not making it a requirement" for that mission, he said.

However, he emphasized the lunar Gateway was still required for the later phase of Artemis. "The Gateway is critically important for the sustainable mission that we have in front of us," he said.

A new suite of lunar landing technologies, called Safe and Precise Landing – Integrated Capabilities Evolution (SPLICE), will enable safer and more accurate lunar landings than ever before. Future Moon missions could use NASA's advanced SPLICE algorithms and sensors to target landing sites that weren't possible during the Apollo missions, such as regions with hazardous boulders and nearby shadowed craters. SPLICE technologies could also help land humans on Mars.
