September 3, 2020

  • Patented high-resolution instrument will detect even smaller methane leaks
  • 10 additional satellites to be launched by December 2022

3 Sept, Montreal, Canada: GHGSat, the global leader in high resolution greenhouse gas monitoring from space, today announced the successful launch of its latest satellite. 'Iris' cleared the tower at Kourou International Spaceport, Guiana, at 21:51 ET / 1:51 UTC (+01:00), onboard a Vega launcher. She separated from the rocket 40 mins later, at an altitude of 515 km. First radio contact was made with Iris less than 2 hours after launch. Over the course of the next week, GHGSat's team will execute a series of procedures to commission the satellite and make it fully operational.

The launch marks a major milestone for the Canadian company, which revolutionized space-based detection of facility-level greenhouse gas emissions when it put 'Claire', a technology demonstrator, into orbit in 2016.

Iris is the first of a new constellation of satellites that utilizes patented technology to detect emissions from sources 100 times smaller than any other satellite system, and with a resolution 100 times higher. This means GHGSat can image and identify methane emissions from point sources as small as individual oil & gas wells. No other commercial operator or state-funded space organisation can do this.

Methane has c.84 times greater global warming potential than carbon dioxide over 20 years. The main constituent of 'natural gas', it accounts for a quarter of all man-made global warming. However, methane is also a valuable resource that can be harnessed to provide energy: estimates suggest that up to 10m homes could be heated with the gas leaking, largely undetected, from US oil and gas production plants each year1.

GHGSat's data and proprietary analytics enable regulators and operators in sectors such as oil and gas, waste management, mining, energy and agriculture to accurately and cost-effectively track emissions, and take prompt action to fix faulty infrastructure.

This capability will be further enhanced when the company's third satellite, 'Hugo' launches later this year. By the end of 2022, GHGSat plans to have 10 high-resolution spacecraft in orbit, and to be the global reference for greenhouse emissions monitoring from space.

One of the particularities of this launch is the use of two iMDC sequencers developed by ISISPACE especially for this mission, that were responsible for the commanding and telemetry processing of all the deployers with CubeSats. Three of the CubeSats on this launch were designed and built by ISISPACE: SIMBA, DIDO-3, and NAPA-1.

SEPTEMBER 3, 2020 BY ANDREIA

This morning, Arianespace's Vega rocket launch, VV16, successfully launched 7 microsatellites and 46 CubeSats into orbit. We are proud about the fact that out of these CubeSats, 34 were accommodated in ISISPACE deployers with support for integration by ISILAUNCH. Moreover, one of the particularities of this launch is the use of two iMDC sequencers developed by ISISPACE especially for this mission, that were responsible for the commanding and telemetry processing of all the deployers with CubeSats. Three of the CubeSats on this launch were designed and built by ISISPACE: SIMBA, DIDO-3, and NAPA-1.

SIMBA is a 3-unit CubeSat mission designed to measure the Total Solar Irradiance and Earth Radiation Budget climate variables with a miniaturized radiometer instrument. It is sponsored by European Space Agency (ESA) and led by the Royal Meteorological Institute Belgium (RMIB), with ISISPACE as the subcontractor responsible for the design and delivery of the platform in which the miniaturized radiometer instrument built by the Royal Meteorological Institute Belgium, and the ADCS subsystem developed by KU Leuven University, are integrated. ISISPACE will also perform commissioning and mission operations of the satellite after launch on the consortium's behalf.

DIDO-3 is a CubeSat with the objective to study the effect of microgravity and low fluid shear with four different experiments on biological material. The payload is a miniaturized medical laboratory provided by the customer, SpacePharma, which provides end-to-end microgravity services enabling research in the field of medical drugs development in Space.

NAPA-1, meaning Firmament-1 in the Thai language, is the first Earth Observation CubeSat of the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF). ISISPACE has designed, built, and tested the satellite platform and ground segment, and will deliver the satellite "in orbit" to the RTAF after commissioning.

This launch campaign brings the ISILAUNCH's track record of involvement in successfully bringing satellites to orbit to an incredible 414! We are grateful for our customers to launch with us.

Kepler Announces Successful Launch of Third Satellite

TORONTO, ONTARIO, September 3rd, 2020 – Kepler's Low Earth Orbit constellation expanded earlier today with the successful launch of its third satellite.  This satellite, internally referred to as TARS, was launched onboard the Arianespace Vega SSMS (Small Spacecraft Mission Service) from the Guiana Space Centre at approximately 01:51 UTC, with communication established shortly thereafter.
Developed as part of the UK's Satellite Applications Catapult's In-Orbit Demonstration (IOD) programme, IOD-5 TARS is the final pathfinding satellite launched by Kepler ahead of the deployment of their GEN1 satellites set to launch in the coming months.  The satellite bus and integration work was completed in partnership with AAC Clyde Space at their facility in Scotland, with launch services provided by Innovative Space Logistics B.V (ISL).  The satellite joins Kepler's two other satellites, both launched in 2018, and will bring additional capacity to Kepler's Global Data Services (GDS) data backhaul offering.  This capacity will enable Kepler to increase the service level of GDS for existing users as well as add new users who have been awaiting the service.
In addition, TARS will advance the capabilities of Kepler's constellation with the addition of narrowband support for IoT applications.  Kepler became the first to provide Ku service from low earth orbit with the launches in 2018, and with TARS will become the first to provide both Ku and narrowband from a single platform in LEO, a feat made possible by Kepler's proprietary Software Defined Radio technology.  Demand for Kepler's IoT service has been building since the announcement of the Kepler IoT DevKit, which will now be released to early program participants.
"TARS represent another important and incremental step in Kepler's Mission to deliver the Internet in space" said Mina Mitry, Chief Executive Officer at Kepler. "We've seen great demand for our GDS Service, and we have significant pent-up demand for our IoT service.  Based on customer discussions we've heard of the clear need for a global, affordable IoT solution across a range of industries, from monitoring to asset tracking to smart agriculture and beyond.  With TARS and the GEN1 satellites to follow, we'll start to address those needs."

Kepler's TARS Satellite

Jeffrey Osborne, VP of Business Development at Kepler added that "The development and launch of TARS represents a truly successful outcome for the Catapult's IOD program.  Our partnership with SAC contributed not only to the build and launch of TARS, but was also fundamental in our choice to have the UK as the site of our first international expansion and first international hire.  We look forward to continuing to advance our business in the UK and Europe, and further collaboration with the space ecosystem there"
Stuart Martin, CEO, Satellite Applications Catapult said: "We have been delighted to work with Kepler Communications on this mission and to build on our Canada-UK relationship. With LEO satellite communications becoming a necessary and fast-growing sector, we are looking forward to seeing IOD-5 TARS support this growth with its new IoT service capabilities."
Kepler's currently available Global Data Service (GDS) covers every part of the globe, from pole to pole, and allows the movement of Gigabytes of data to and from the user's location at economic rates.  With this launch, Kepler's EverywhereIoT service will offer the same global coverage for IoT applications, with data plans that support a wide range of applications across a wide range of industries and use cases.  Visit kepler.space to learn more and explore how Kepler is enabling communication solutions that enable the movement of all types of data from all points on the globe.
