Launch VA253: new targeted launch date

The progress of operations currently underway at the Final Assembly Building has enabled August 14 to be envisioned as the launch date for Ariane Flight 253 (VA253), with the possibility of an optimization in the process for the mission to be performed one day earlier.

If the flight is on August 14, liftoff will occur as early as possible during the following launch window:

  • Between 5:33 p.m. and 6:20 p.m. Washington, D.C. time,
  • Between 6:33 p.m. and 7:20 p.m. Kourou, French Guiana time,
  • Between 21:33 and 22:20 Universal time (UTC),
  • Between 11:33 p.m. and 12:20 a.m. Paris time, in the night of August 14 to 15,
  • Between 06:33 a.m. and 07:20 a.m. Japan time, in the morning of August 15.

Arianespace is applying its standard procedures to maintain the highest level of reliability for the benefit of its customers. The Ariane 5 launch vehicle and its three spacecraft payloads remain in stable and safe conditions.

Ariane 5 is given the go-ahead for launch on August 14 with a triple satellite payload

Arianespace Flight VA253 – which will utilize an increased-lift Ariane 5 version – is a "go" for launch on August 14 following an additional Launch Readiness Review (LRR) performed today in French Guiana.

This approval clears the way for Ariane 5's return to the Spaceport's ELA-3 launch zone tomorrow, followed by the final countdown leading to an evening liftoff on Friday.

The mission to geostationary transfer orbit will deploy two telecommunications satellites: Galaxy 30 for Intelsat, and BSAT-4b for B-SAT, both of which are long-time Arianespace customers. Also carried by Ariane 5 is the Mission Extension Vehicle-2 (MEV-2) for Northrop Grumman's wholly-owned subsidiary, SpaceLogistics LLC, which is a first-time user of Arianespace launch services.

Galaxy 30 was built by Northrop Grumman for Intelsat and will be the first payload deployed during the Ariane 5 mission. This satellite is to provide Ultra-High-Definition video distribution/broadcast and broadband services that cover North America.

MEV-2 is stacked under Galaxy 30 on Ariane 5, and is to be the second payload released during Flight VA253. The SpaceLogistics LLC-built spacecraft is designed to offer life extension services for in-orbit satellites, and its initial target is the Intelsat 10-02 relay platform, which has been in geostationary orbit since 2004.

Completing Flight VA253's mission sequence will be the deployment of BSAT-4b, configured for Ultra-High-Definition (UHD, 4K and 8K) direct-to-home television broadcasting across Japan. Built by Maxar Technologies, BSAT-4b will be operated by Japan's Broadcasting Satellite System Corporation (B-SAT).

The launcher configuration used for Flight VA253 marks the final step in Ariane 5's latest performance improvement program, which was decided in 2016 and has increased the launch vehicle's total payload capacity by 300 kg. ArianeGroup is production prime contractor for Ariane 5, delivering the launcher to Arianespace for operation.

Liftoff of Flight VA253 is planned as early as possible within the following launch window on August 14:

  • Between 5:33 p.m. and 6:20 p.m. Washington, D.C. time,
  • Between 6:33 p.m. and 7:20 p.m. Kourou, French Guiana time,
  • Between 21:33 and 22:20 Universal time (UTC),
  • Between 11:33 p.m. and 12:20 a.m. Paris time, in the night of August 14 to August 15,
  • Between 06:33 a.m. and 07:20 a.m. Japan time, in the morning of August 15.

Minus-4 hours, 51 minutes. The countdown officially commenced at 1010 GMT (6:10 a.m. EDT), with clocks at the Guiana Space Center timed for a targeted liftoff at 2133 GMT (5:33 p.m. EDT; 6:33 p.m. French Guiana time). The launch window extends for 47 minutes.

Electrical systems checks on the Ariane 5 began at 1100 GMT (7 a.m. EDT).

Workers also put finishing touches on the launch pad, including the closure of doors, removal of safety barriers and configuring fluid lines for fueling. The flight program for today's launch was also expected to be loaded into the rocket's computer.

After a weather status report, the launch team will begin the process to fuel the rocket shortly with super-cold liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen propellants around 1655 GMT (12:55 p.m. EDT). First, ground reservoirs and the rocket's helium tank will be pressurized, then the fuel lines will be chilled down to condition the plumbing for the flow of super-cold liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, which are stored at approximately minus 423 degrees Fahrenheit and minus 298 degrees Fahrenheit, respectively.

It is expected to take approximately two hours to fill the Ariane 5 core stage tanks.

A similar procedure for the Ariane 5's cryogenic upper stage is set to commence at 1805 GMT (2:05 p.m. EDT).

Chilldown conditioning of the Vulcain 2 first stage engine will began at 1815 GMT (2:15 p.m. EDT), and a communications check between the rocket and ground telemetry, tracking and command systems is planned at 2018 GMT (4:18 p.m. EDT).

A final weather briefing will come at T-minus 10 minues, and then the computer-controlled synchronized countdown sequence will begin seven minutes before launch to pressurize propellant tanks, switch to on-board power and take the rocket's guidance system to flight mode.

The Vulcain 2 engine will ignite as the countdown clock reaches zero, followed by a health check and ignition of the Ariane 5's solid rocket boosters seven seconds later to send the 1.7 million-pound launcher skyward.

Five seconds after blastoff, the rocket will begin pitching east from the ELA-3 launch pad, surpassing the speed of sound less than a minute into the mission. The Ariane 5's twin solid rocket boosters will jettison nearly two-and-a-half minutes after liftoff.

Once above the dense atmosphere, the launcher's payload fairing will fall away at an altitude of more than 70 miles — about 112 kilometers -- at Plus+3 minutes, 20 seconds. The Ariane 5's first stage will shut down 8 minutes, 40 seconds, after liftoff, followed moments later by stage separation and ignition of the hydrogen-fueled cryogenic HM7B upper stage engine.

The rocket's upper stage will fire more than 16 minutes, accelerating to a velocity of 21,000 mph, or more than 9.3 kilometers per second, to reach an orbit with a planned high point of 35,738 kilometers (22,206 miles), a targeted low point of 250 kilometers (155 miles) and an inclination of 6 degrees.

The release of the Galaxy 30 communications satellite will come first at Plus+27 minutes, 47 seconds. The MEV-2 satellite servicing vehicle, attached below Galaxy 30, will deploy next at Plus+34 minutes, 22 seconds

Once Galaxy 30 and MEV-2 are deployed, the Ariane 5 rocket's barrel-shaped Sylda 5 dual-payload adapter will be jettisoned at Plus+35 minutes, 52 seconds.

The BSAT-4b television broadcast satellite will separate from the lower portion of the payload stack at Plus+47 minutes, 39 seconds.
