NASA's Mars Perseverance Rover Passes Flight Readiness Review

NASA's Mars 2020 Perseverance rover mission cleared its Flight Readiness Review Wednesday, an important milestone on its way to the launch pad. The meeting was an opportunity for the Mars 2020 team and launch vehicle provider United Launch Alliance to report on the readiness of the spacecraft, along with the Atlas V rocket, flight and ground hardware, software, personnel, and procedures. The daily launch window on Thursday, July 30, opens at 7:50 a.m. EDT.

"Our deepest thanks go to the many teams who have worked so hard to get Perseverance ready to fly during these challenging times," said NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine. "This mission is emblematic of our nation's spirit of meeting problems head-on and finding solutions together. The incredible science Perseverance will enable and the bold human missions it will help make possible are going to be inspirations for us all."

"We're pleased to be passing another milestone with the completion of the Flight Readiness Review," said Matt Wallace, deputy project manager for the mission at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Southern California. "But we'll keep our heads down through the final prelaunch activities and the opening of the launch window next week, until we're certain this spacecraft is safely on its way. Mars is a tough customer, and we don't take anything for granted."

With all the connections between the spacecraft and Atlas V launch vehicle complete, the majority of business remaining for Mars 2020's Assembly, Test, and Launch Operations (ATLO) team involves checking out every one of the multitude of systems and subsystems onboard the rover, aeroshell, cruise stage, and descent stage.

"NASA can't wait to take the next steps on the surface of Mars with Perseverance," said Lori Glaze, director of the Planetary Science Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "The science and technology of this mission are going to help us address major questions about the geologic and astrobiologic history of Mars that we've been working on for decades, and we're excited to take the whole word with us on this journey."

"At this point, the spacecraft has been powered on and will remain so around the clock," said Dave Gruel, ATLO manager for Mars 2020. "The launch operations team will continue to monitor the health of the spacecraft to ensure it's 'Go' for launch – nothing glamorous, but an important part of the job."

The spacecraft and launch teams have one more major review to complete. Scheduled Monday, July 27, the Launch Readiness Review is the last significant checkup before the mission receives final approval to proceed with launch.

"At present, everything is green across the board," said Wallace. "Everyone involved with this endeavor, from the spacecraft team to the launch vehicle team to those working the range, are looking forward to seeing Perseverance begin its long-awaited flight to Mars."

Around 1 p.m. EDT on July 27, or approximately one hour after the Launch Readiness Review ends, the agency will hold a preflight news conference that will air live on NASA Television and the agency's website.

The Perseverance rover's astrobiology mission will search for signs of ancient microbial life. It will also characterize the planet's climate and geology, pave the way for human exploration of the Red Planet, and be the first planetary mission to collect and cache selected samples of Martian rock and regolith (broken rock and dust). Subsequent missions, currently under consideration by NASA in cooperation with ESA (European Space Agency), would send spacecraft to Mars to collect these cached samples from the surface and return them to Earth for in-depth analysis.

JPL, which is managed by Caltech in Pasadena, is building and will manage operations of Perseverance for NASA. The agency's Launch Services Program, based at the agency's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, is responsible for launch management. The Mars 2020 mission with its Perseverance rover are part of America's larger Moon to Mars exploration approach that includes missions to the Moon as a way to prepare for human exploration of the Red Planet. Charged with sending the first woman and next man to the Moon by 2024, NASA will establish a sustained human presence on and around the Moon by 2028 through NASA's Artemis program.

Об этом в четверг сообщила пресс-служба Лаборатории реактивного движения NASA (JPL).

"Мы очень рады, что нам удалось преодолеть очередной барьер к запуску и пройти все предполетные проверки. При этом мы не собираемся расслабляться и будем продолжать работу в том же ключе и ритме до того момента, когда марсоход будет запущен в космос. Марс - крайне суровая планета и мы не собираемся оставлять что-то на волю случая", - заявил Мэтт Уоллас, заместитель руководителя проекта Perseverance, чьи слова передает пресс-служба JPL.

Первоначально планировалось отправить марсоход на Красную планету на борту ракеты-носителя Atlas V с космодрома на мысе Канаверал (штат Флорида) 17 июля. Но дату старта перенесли сначала на 20 и 22 июля, а потом - на 30 июля. Переносы были связаны со сложностями, возникшими при стыковке капсулы с марсоходом и ракетой. Они были окончательно решены только в середине текущего месяца.

Как отмечается в сообщении JPL, пятый ровер NASA официально завершил прохождение всех предполетных тестов, запланированных до вывода ракеты Atlas V на стартовую площадку и перевода марсохода на бортовое питание. Окончательное решение о готовности к запуску будет принято в понедельник, 27 июля, когда специалисты NASA завершат последние тесты всех систем ракеты-носителя и капсулы с марсоходом.

Поиски марсианской жизни

В декабре 2012 года представители NASA объявили, что инженеры агентства создадут еще один марсоход, пятый по счету. Он станет своеобразным наследником ровера Curiosity, который совершил посадку на Марс в августе 2012 года. Новый аппарат, получивший неофициальное имя "Марс-2020", будет выведен в космос в середине лета 2020 года и осуществит посадку в кратере Йезеро на экваторе Марса в феврале 2021 года.

С технической точки зрения пятый марсоход NASA будет полным наследником Curiosity, что заметно удешевило и ускорило сборку ровера, чья стоимость оценивается космическим агентством в $2,46 млрд. Главной задачей "Марса-2020" будут не поиски следов пресноводных водоемов, как у его предшественника, а оценка обитаемости Марса в прошлом и поиски возможных следов жизни.

Для этого Perseverance будет не только изучать свойства отложений осадочных пород, но и собирать их образцы в специальный "шкаф", установленный на его борту. Запасенные в нем минералы на Землю вернет специальная совместная миссия Европейского космического агентства (ЕКА) и NASA, которая будет отправлена к Марсу не раньше 2026 года.

A historic mission years in the making is now less than a week from liftoff.

Final preparations are being made for launch of NASA's Mars Perseverance rover, targeted for Thursday, July 30, from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Perseverance will lift off aboard a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V 541 rocket from Space Launch Complex 41. The two-hour window opens at 7:50 a.m. EDT.

"It's hard to describe the feeling of pride and accomplishment — mixed with the excitement and nervous apprehension — that goes with this final stage of the mission," said John Calvert, Mars 2020 Mission Manager for NASA's Launch Services Program (LSP), which is based at Kennedy Space Center in Florida and is managing the launch.

The team has successfully overcome obstacles and challenges along the way, including working through a worldwide pandemic, to remain on schedule for launch.

"Just throw COVID-19 on the pile of unexpected things that NASA and its incredible teams have been able to respond to and deal with for decades," Calvert said. "It's part of our DNA: work hard and solve the problems as they present themselves. Whatever it takes — simple as that."

Live launch coverage will begin at 7 a.m. on NASA Television and the agency's website. The broadcast will capture major milestones as Perseverance starts her seven-month journey to the Red Planet. A postlaunch news conference is planned from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Several events leading up to launch also will be broadcast on NASA Television and the agency's website.

  • Monday, July 27: Prelaunch news conference, from 1 to 2 p.m. NASA Associate Administrator for Communications Bettina Inclán will host the event, featuring NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine, NASA Associate Administrator Thomas Zurbuchen, Launch Director Omar Baez from LSP, and ULA President and CEO Tory Bruno. A Mars 2020 Mission Engineering/Science Briefing will follow, from 3 to 4:30 p.m.
  • Tuesday, July 28: NASA Edge Rollout Show, from 10 to 11 a.m.; Mars 2020 Mars Sample Return Briefing, from 2 to 3 p.m.; and Mars 2020 Mission Tech and Humans to Mars Briefing, from 4 to 5 p.m.
  • Wednesday, July 29: Briefing with NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine, NASA Deputy Administrator Jim Morhard, Kennedy Director Bob Cabana and astronaut Zena Cardman, from noon to 1 p.m.

Perseverance will reach Mars on Feb. 18, 2021, touching down on the surface of Jezero Crater. About the size of a car with dimensions similar to the Curiosity rover, Perseverance will carry seven different scientific instruments. The rover's astrobiology mission, developed under NASA's Mars Exploration Program, will search for signs of past microbial life. It will characterize the planet's climate and geology, collect samples for future return to Earth, and pave the way for human exploration of the Red Planet.

Attached to the belly of the rover and weighing less than four pounds is NASA's Mars Helicopter, Ingenuity. The twin-rotor, solar-powered helicopter will become the first aircraft to fly on another world.

Weather 80% GO for Thursday's launch

The initial forecast from Launch Weather Officer Jessica Williams for Thursday's 7:50 a.m. EDT (1150 UTC) launch of Atlas V and the Mars 2020 mission indicates an 80 percent chance of favorable conditions. The available launch window extends for two hours.

"For launch day Thursday, overall conditions are favorable. However, an isolated shower just offshore and some mid-level clouds along the coast are likely as a weak front off the coast of the southeast sags southward. Therefore, the primary concerns for launch day are the Cumulus Cloud and Thick Cloud Layer Rules," the launch weather team says.

The operations forecast includes a few low-level and scattered mid-level clouds, good visibility, southwesterly winds 8 to 10 knots and a temperature near 80 degrees F.

If the launch is delayed to Friday for some reason, there is a 90 percent chance of good conditions.

"For Friday morning, the front weakens, but an isolated shower could still be just offshore. Therefore the primary concern for the 24hr backup day is the Cumulus Cloud Rule," forecasters report.

Launch Readiness Review completed

The Launch Readiness Review (LRR) has given approval to continue preparations for Thursday's liftoff of the United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket carrying NASA's Mars 2020 mission.

Liftoff is scheduled for 7:50 a.m. EDT (1150 UTC) from Space Launch Complex-41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

The LRR, led by NASA Launch Manager Omar Baez, was completed this morning in the Mission Briefing Room at Kennedy Space Center's Neil Armstrong Operations & Checkout Building and virtually via teleconferencing.

Leadership from ULA, NASA and the Space Force assessed the readiness of the rocket, payload and mission assets, discussed the status of pre-flight processing work, heard technical overviews of the countdown and flight, and previewed the weather forecast that continues to be favorable with an 80 percent chance of acceptable conditions. 

At the conclusion of the meeting, senior leaders were polled and gave a unanimous ready status for launch, then signed the Launch Readiness Certificate. 

The Mars 2020 mission featuring the Perseverance rover and Ingenuity helicopter is headed for Jezero Crater, home to an ancient river delta that could have collected and preserved organic molecules and other potential signs of microbial life from the water and sediments that flowed into the crater billions of years ago.

In addition to Perseverance's astrobiology mission, the rover will characterize the planet's climate and geology, collect samples for future return to Earth and demonstrate the viability of technologies that address the challenges of future human expeditions to Mars.

United Launch Alliance will offer live reports from the Atlas Spaceflight Operations Center in our automatically-refreshing blog during the Atlas V's rollout to the launch pad on Tuesday, plus provide comprehensive countdown coverage beginning Thursday morning at 12:15 a.m. EDT (0415 UTC), with continuing commentary all the way to the spacecraft separation nearly an hour after liftoff.
