The United Arab Emirates has officially entered the global space exploration race. This came after His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahyan, President of the UAE, issued a decree to establish the UAE Space Agency, and began working on sending the first Arab and Islamic probe to Mars, a project named "Hope Probe". This makes the UAE one of only nine countries working to explore Mars. The probe will start its journey in 2020, and is scheduled to arrive to Mars by 2021, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the union of the UAE. The planning, management and implementation of the probe project are implemented by an Emirati team, whose members depend on their skills and diligence to acquire all space exploration-related knowledge and applying it. The program is fully funded and supervised by the UAE Space Agency, while the probe is being developed by the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC), in collaboration with international partners. The objectives of the mission include building Emirati human resources that are highly qualified in space technology, developing knowledge, scientific research and space applications to benefit mankind. Other goals of the mission include establishing a sustainable knowledge-based economy, promoting diversification and encouraging innovation, elevating the UAE's status in the space race and further widen benefits. The mission will help to promote the UAE's efforts in scientific explorations, and to build international partnerships in the sector to promote the position of the UAE. UAE's mission to Mars on schedule for launch despite Covid-19

The Hope probe is due to take off in July from Japan's Tanegashima Space Centre

The UAE's Mars orbiter will launch this July from Japan as planned, despite the affect the coronavirus pandemic is having on the global space industry.

The Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre told The National that the launch date has not been changed and the Hope Probe is still due to leave Earth from the Tanegashima Space Centre mid-July.
The main purpose of this mission was not to reach Mars, but to create a big disruptive change within the UAE to encourage youth to go into the sciences and engineering", - Omran Sharaf, Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre

China and the US also plan to launch orbiters and rovers to Mars in July. The month was chosen to take advantage of a narrow launch window - between July 14 and August 3 — when Earth and Mars align favourably for such missions.

If missed, space officials may have to wait 26 months for another launch opportunity. This would put a major dent in UAE's plan to reach Mars by the country's 50th anniversary in 2021.

Hope will lift off on the H-IIA rocket, a service provided by Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

Dan Lochmann, global marketing communications director for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, told The National he did not expect Covid-19 to affect the launch.

"For the moment we think the impact on our operations will be minimal but will continue to monitor the situation. We are working hard to prepare for this important launch."

The affect of the virus on the space industry has been minimal compared to other industries worldwide, including education and retail, which have suffered from mass closures.

Space launches by Russia's space agency Roscosmos are ongoing in Baikonur, Kazakhstan, with the next manned mission due on April 9. SpaceX is also carrying forward with lift-offs in the United States.

...

The Hope Probe was built by a team of 150 Emirati engineers, scientists and researchers. It was developed in the US in partnership with three universities.

The orbiter was brought to the UAE in February and is currently at the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre in Dubai. Its next destination will be Japan's Tanegashima Island.

"The Arab world's first interplanetary mission! The Emirates Mars Mission 'Hope Probe' will leave for Mars in July 2020, on a mission to find answers to the unsolved mysteries about the red planet," Emirates Mars Mission said on Twitter on Thursday.
As of March 17, Japan has seen 824 cases and 28 deaths related to the coronavirus outbreak, with 712 confirmed cases on the Diamond Princess cruise ship docked at Yokohama port.

Japan's space agency Jaxa has taken precautionary measures to keep staff and tourists safe.

"To prevent the spread of the new coronavirus, all exhibits are closed from February 28 to March 31," the agency's website read.

Field centres, including Tanegashima Space Centre, were temporarily closed from February 28 to March 15.

The Emirates Mars Mission was announced by UAE leaders in 2014. If successful, the UAE will become the first Arab country to reach another planet.

Hope's objective will be to study Mars' upper atmosphere and send back data, helping scientists understand what's causing gases to leak from the atmosphere, what caused the planet to dry out and how to prevent the same from happening to Earth.

"The main purpose of this mission was not to reach Mars, but to create a big disruptive change within the UAE to encourage youth to go into the sciences and engineering," said Omran Sharaf, head of the mission. "Mars was a tool for a bigger objective."

On Monday, Sultan Al Neyadi, who is part of UAE's first astronaut corps, said: "In July 2020, the Hope probe will embark on its eight-month journey to Mars. Setting a precedent in the field of space exploration, the UAE is set to become the first Arab country to launch an interplanetary mission and the seventh country globally to send a probe to Mars."

WASHINGTON — A Mars orbiter developed by the United Arab Emirates will ship to its launch site in Japan this week, its launch preparations affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

The Emirates Mars Mission, an orbiter also known as Hope, is scheduled to launch on an H-2A rocket from Japan during a three-week launch window that opens July 14. The spacecraft will go into orbit around Mars in early 2021 to study the Martian atmosphere.

Preparation for the launch had been going well, Omran Sharaf, project director for the mission, said in an April 17 presentation at an online meeting of NASA's Mars Exploration Program Analysis Group (MEPAG). The spacecraft completed environmental testing in the United States last December and was then transported to Dubai for a final set of tests.

Original plans called for completing those tests in May, then shipping the spacecraft to the Tanegashima Space Center in Japan for final launch preparations. The pandemic, though, led mission management to move up the ship date to April 20.

"The decision was made early on that we need to ship the spacecraft as soon as possible to the launch site given the restrictions that came out with regard to traveling," he said, such as requirements for international travelers to self-quarantine. "We had to start operating under the worst-case scenario."

Those preparations included sending an advance team of engineers to Japan who will be out of quarantine when the spacecraft arrives and can immediately start working on the spacecraft. Those who travel with the spacecraft to Japan, though, will go into quarantine for two weeks before they can participate in launch preparations.

"This added another level of complexity" to a mission that was already challenging, he said. The mission is the first to Mars by the UAE, and a cornerstone of the country's growing space ambitions.

Sharaf said the governments of both the UAE and Japan were supportive of plans to ship the spacecraft despite lockdowns imposed in response to the pandemic. "We got all the necessary approvals, and now the only thing that's left is to ship the spacecraft," he said.

Moving up the ship date, he said, means that some spacecraft tests won't be performed. "We had to focus only on the critical testing and remove the additional testing," he said. "It would have been good to have some of these tests, but we had to focus on completing the critical ones."

Hope is one of three Mars missions expected to launch this summer. NASA's Mars 2020 rover will launch July 17 on a United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 from Cape Canaveral, with NASA taking special measures to keep the mission on schedule amid the pandemic. Huoxing-1, a Chinese Mars mission with an orbiter, lander and rover, is also set to launch in July on a Long March 5, although the Chinese government has provided few recent updates about the mission's status.
