Planet's First Launch Of 2020: 26 SuperDoves On A Vega
Mike Safyan | February 13, 2020

Planet launches every three to six months to keep its constellation of Earth imaging satellites replenished and flying the latest and greatest technologies. Following on the heels of the successful launch of Flock 4p in November of 2019, Planet's first launch of 2020 will be on Arianespace's European-made Vega rocket, a first for the Doves. The 26 SuperDoves, Flock 4v, are scheduled for lift-off on March 23, 2020 from the Guiana Space Centre in French Guiana.

These 26 Flock 4v SuperDoves will be split into two batches on the same launch: 14 of them will be housed inside and from ISL's QuadPack deployers and the remaining 12 will be deployed from D-Orbit's InOrbit Now (ION) freeflying deployment platform.

Over 200 Dove satellites have successfully deployed from ISL's trusty QuadPack system. This will be the first flight of D-Orbit's ION system, and those satellites will be deployed over a handful of weeks. D-Orbit will also be verifying key technologies on their ION platform that will eventually enable future versions to act as a "space tug," with the capability to perform orbit adjustments or accelerate phasing for the satellites it carries.

Planeteers gather around crates of Flock 4vs before they're sent off to the launch site. © 2020, Planet Labs Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Much like the Falcon 9 SSO-A launch in 2018, this Vega launch is going to be a smallsat party. As Arianespace's official mission name "Small Spacecraft Mission Service—Proof of Concept" suggests, this is the first "dedicated rideshare" on a Vega launch vehicle; rather than a primary satellite customer driving the requirements of the mission, this is a dedicated ride for a few dozen small satellites all looking to go to the same orbit.

We look forward to a successful launch and extend our thanks to our partners at Arianespace, ISISpace, D-Orbit, Spaceflight and SAB Aerospace for all their efforts in making this mission come together. Follow Planet on Twitter to receive the latest updates on our upcoming launches.

By Jodi Sorensen
MARCH 9, 2020

First dedicated rideshare mission on Vega to launch spacecraft for Spaceflight customers, including Satellogic, Planet, and Swarm Technologies

Seattle – March 9, 2020 — Spaceflight Inc. today announced it is providing mission management and rideshare integration services for four organizations on Arianespace's first dedicated rideshare mission on its Vega launch vehicle. The proof of concept rideshare mission, VV16, will launch 53 microsatellites, nanosatellites and cubesats, including 28 payloads from Spaceflight customers Satellogic, Planet, Swarm Technologies, and an undisclosed organization.

Targeted for late March from the Guiana Space Center in Kourou, French Guiana, this launch represents Spaceflight's first mission aboard the Vega.

"This is an important launch for all involved," said Curt Blake, president and CEO, Spaceflight, Inc. "Not only is this our first launch on the Vega, it's Arianespace's first fully dedicated rideshare mission, which is a direct response to the industry's demand for more rideshare options. Our customers are a combination of long-standing, repeat constellation developers as well as microsat organizations opting to work with us for the first time. Our comprehensive rideshare services range from capacity brokering to full integration and logistics services to help everyone achieve their mission goals on time and budget. We're equally excited to partner with Arianespace and play an integral role in their first, of hopefully many, rideshare missions."

This historic rideshare mission to Sun Synchronous low-Earth Orbit of 500km aboard the Vega will transport Spaceflight customer spacecraft including:
    [/li]
  • NewSat-6, a low Earth orbit remote sensing satellite designed and manufactured in South America by Satellogic, a vertically integrated geospatial analytics company that is building the first Earth observation platform with the ability to remap the entire planet at both high-frequency and high-resolution. This is Satellogic's 11th spacecraft in orbit, equipped with multispectral and hyperspectral imaging capabilities and it will be added to the company's growing satellite constellation.
  • Planet's 14 next-generation SuperDove satellites (Flock 4v), which will join its constellation of 150 Earth-imaging spacecraft.
  • Swarm Technologies' 12 (.25U) satellites which provide affordable global connectivity.
  • An undisclosed microsat.
"We are thankful to Spaceflight for coordinating this launch for us," said Emiliano Kargieman, CEO and founder of Satellogic. "As we continue to increase our in-orbit capacity, the Vega launch will demonstrate our capability to adapt our satellites to different rockets and deployment systems. This mission will also allow us to test new imaging technology capable of capturing sub-meter resolution. Through the refinement of sub-meter imaging, we plan to further drive down the cost of high-frequency geospatial analytics."

Arianespace CEO, Stéphane Israël, commented, "We are excited to deliver 28 satellites ranging from 0.33 to 140 kg for Spaceflight and its customers. This inaugural SSMS mission onboard Vega shows how our light vehicle is adapted to tackle the booming smallsat market through our rideshare solution. Today with Vega, tomorrow with Vega C and Ariane 6, Arianespace will offer the best solutions to its customers to deploy their ambitious projects."

Since its founding, Spaceflight has launched more than 270 satellites via 29 rocket launches, establishing itself as the leading rideshare service provider. Spaceflight plans to execute more than 10 missions in 2020 across many different launch vehicles, including the Falcon 9, Antares, Electron, Vega, SSLV, PSLV, and LauncherOne.

Spaceflight's parent company, Spaceflight Industries recently announced it has signed an agreement to sell Spaceflight's rideshare business to Japan's Mitsui & Co., Ltd. and Yamasa Co., Ltd. Upon regulatory approval, Spaceflight will continue to operate as an independent U.S.-based company, with a 50/50 joint venture ownership stake by Mitsui & Co. and Yamasa.

COVID-19 / Arianespace to resume its launch campaigns at the Guiana Space Center

Following the measures presented by the French government on April 28 as part of the gradual resumption of activity planned from May 11, and the announcement of a restart of operational activities at the Guiana Space Center, Arianespace confirms its following launch objectives:
    [/li]
  • Flight VV16/SSMS – The first "rideshare" Vega launch, carrying approximately 50 small satellites, in mid-June;

  • Flight VA253 – A dual-payload Ariane 5 mission for two customers, Intelsat and B-SAT, at the end of July.
All of these campaigns will be carried out in strict compliance with the health rules published by the Prefect of French Guiana, as well as the French CNES space agency and the Guiana Space Center. The objective is to preserve the health of launch site workers and those who are deployed to the space center, as well as the local population – all while ensuring the security and safety conditions required for preparation of the planned launches.

After the suspension of launch campaigns that was imposed on March 16, standby measures and security controls for launch vehicles and satellite payloads were handled by the teams of Arianespace, CNES and all the companies involved in the Guiana Space Center, and carried out in accordance with standard procedures.

The launch campaigns for two Soyuz missions – Flights VS24 and VS25 – will resume this summer.

As of April 21, the measures to maintain the launch site in an operational configuration have been carried out with local teams based in French Guiana, applying social distancing measures.

Preparations are underway for Arianespace's upcoming Vega and Ariane 5 missions

A pair of important arrivals this week – one by air, the other by sea – marked an acceleration of preparations at Europe's Spaceport for Arianespace's next two missions, to be performed from French Guiana with its lightweight Vega and heavy-lift Ariane 5 launch vehicles.

These parallel arrivals involved personnel who will conduct the first Vega "rideshare" mission, scheduled for mid-June to orbit 53 small satellite payloads; and Ariane 5 launch vehicle components for a three-passenger flight planned for liftoff this summer.

Team members for the Vega launch campaign were flown in aboard a chartered airliner that touched down at Félix Eboué Airport near the French Guiana capital city of Cayenne. They will be responsible for preparing this mission's liftoff from the Vega Launch Complex (ZLV), located on the Kourou side of the Spaceport.

...

Launch activities in French Guiana had been suspended mid-March because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and were gradually resumed – carried out in strict compliance with health rules published by the Prefect of French Guiana, as well as the French CNES space agency and the Guiana Space Center.

Vega proof-of-concept flight for SSMS

Designated Flight VV16 in Arianespace's numbering system, Vega's mission will be the first of the Small Spacecraft Mission Service (SSMS) – a program initiated by the European Space Agency (ESA) in 2016, with the contribution of the European Commission. For all the European partners involved, its purpose is to perfectly address the burgeoning microsatellite market for institutional and commercial customers alike.

The modular SSMS dispenser was designed to be as market-responsive as possible, able to accommodate a wide combination of payloads – from a main large satellite with smaller companions to multiple smaller satellites, or dozens of individual CubeSats.

Flight VV16 will be Arianespace's fifth launch overall in 2020, and its first this year using the lightweight Vega member of its launch vehicle family – which also includes the heavy-lift Ariane 5 and medium-lift Soyuz.

The satellite passengers on Flight VV16 will be deployed by Vega to Sun-synchronous orbits. They will serve different types of applications, such as Earth observation, telecommunications, science and technology/education.
