Dozens of scientific experiments are scheduled to travel to the International Space Station aboard a Dragon cargo spacecraft in late July. This 18th SpaceX Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) contract  mission for NASA blasts off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida on a Falcon 9 rocket. The springboard to NASA's missions to the Moon and Mars, the space station also provides opportunities for  other U.S. government agencies, private industry, and academic and research institutions to conduct microgravity research. Such research can lead to the development of new technologies, medical  treatments and products that improve life on Earth.

Via @SpaceX: CRS-18 Dragon will not only have two ISS logos (representing it's two previous trips to the station), but also an #Apollo50th logo!

It is launch day at Cape Canaveral, where a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket is being readied for liftoff at 6:24 p.m. EDT (2224 GMT) with a Dragon cargo capsule to resupply the International Space Station.

Overnight, ground teams worked to load time-sensitive cargo into the Dragon spacecraft's pressurized compartment before rotating the Falcon 9 launcher vertical at Cape Canaveral's Complex 40 launch pad.

Weather conditions along Florida's Space Coast are expected to be an issue during today's countdown, with widespread thunderstorms in the forecast. The most recent forecast released by the U.S. Air Force's 45th Weather Squadron suggested a 70 percent probability that weather will prevent a launch today, but an update is expected later this morning when NASA and SpaceX officials hold a pre-launch press conference at 10 a.m. EDT (1400 GMT).

This will be SpaceX's ninth launch of the year, and the company's 18th resupply launch to the space station under a cargo transportation contract signed with NASA in 2008.

Assuming the Falcon 9 gets off the ground during today's instantaneous launch window, the Dragon cargo craft is due to arrive at the space station early Friday.

Equipment awaiting launch inside the Dragon spacecraft include 40 mice, which scientists will use to examine the effects of prolonged weightlessness on muscles and bones, and a host of other biological experiments.

NASA is also launching a spacesuit inside the Dragon cargo capsule, and a new docking adapter is loaded inside the spacecraft's unpressurized aft payload bay for attachment outside the station. The Boeing-built adapter will be used by visiting commercial crew capsules.
