China progressing with work on new medium, heavy and super-heavy Long March launch vehicles
by Andrew Jones | Oct 17, 2017 12:20 | WENCHANGMOONMARS

China is making progress on two new soon-to-fly rockets and will move on to develop a range of new launch vehicles with various capabilities before 2030, senior space officials have said.

Long Lehao, chief carrier rocket designer at the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALT), said at a 2017 World Space Week conference earlier in October that China will develop 12 types of new-generation Long March carrier rockets by 2030.
This will include a Saturn V-class super-heavy lift rocket that will be capable of launching a human mission to the Moon.

CALT is a subsidiary of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), the main contractor for China's space programme, and has developed a range of Long March rockets to meet various needs.

Professor Huang Jun at the Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, told gbtimes.com that CALT is currently working on two launch vehicles, the Long March 8 and the Long March 5B.

Super-heavy Long March 9

China will soon also officially begin development of the Long March 9, with a launch capacity roughly the same as the Saturn V rocket of the United States, which took the Apollo astronauts to the Moon in the 1960s and 1970s.

According to Huang, the Long March 9 will be near 100 metres in length with maximum core diameter of 10 metres. Its boosters will be 5 meters in diameter - the same as the core of the Long March 5 - China's largest rocket so far.

It will have a carrying capacity of about 140 tonnes to LEO - more than 5 times of the Long March 5B - and 50 tonnes to Lunar Transfer Orbit.

"At present, the technical research and verification work for Long March 9 is going smoothly. The key technologies include the conceptual/preliminary design and optimisation of the heavy rocket, the design, manufacture and test of large 10m diameter rocket structure, the development of a LOX / kerosene engine with 480 tonnes of thrust and hydrogen oxygen engine with 220 tonnes of thrust.

"It can fully meet deep space exploration mission requirements of crewed lunar and Mars sample return missions and exploration of other planets in the solar system," Huang says.

CALT is studying a mission concept for human landings on the Moon which involves both a Long March 9 rocket and a Long March 5B to launch the crewed spacecraft.

In the long run, the Long March 9 could be used in "China's deep space exploration, crewed lunar and Mars missions, space infrastructure construction such as a space-based solar power station and other tasks."

Great Wall Industry.

HELSINKI, Finland — A senior designer with the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology has presented updated details for an upcoming series of new rockets to expand China's launch capabilities, including super-heavy-lift and reusable rockets.

Long Lehao, a chief designer with CALT, a major launch vehicle institute under the main contractor for China's space activities, revealed the details in a lecture at Tsinghua University in Beijing on May 31.

Long gave an overview of the history and progress of Chinese launch vehicles before providing updates on new projects under development, notably the Long March 9.

The Long March 9 will be a Saturn 5-class super-heavy-lift rocket comparable in capacity to the Space Launch System currently being developed under NASA.

According to Long, the Long March 9 will be capable of lifting 140 metric tons to low Earth orbit, 50 tons to Earth-Moon transfer orbit, and 44 tons to Earth-Mars transfer orbit.

The 93-meter-high Long March 9 is expected to have a launch mass of over 4,000 metric tons, producing close to 6,000 tons of thrust.

The core stage will have a diameter of 10 meters while four boosters will each have a diameter of up to 5 meters. This would make the boosters comparable to the Long March 5, China's largest rocket so far, which debuted in 2016 and last July suffered a first stage engine issue that prompted a redesign. A third flight of the rocket is expected around November.

The Long March 9 is slated to be ready for a test flight around 2030, with Long adding that progress on the project includes successful forging of 10-meter-diameter alloy rings and breakthroughs related to 500-ton-thrust kerosene-liquid oxygen and 220-ton-thrust hydrolox engines.

Crewed lunar landings, Mars sample return
The first major mission of the Long March 9 is expected to be a single-launch Mars sample return mission, while the rocket is also being designed to facilitate lunar missions, including crewed landings.

CALT has previously said that it is studying a mission profile which would see the Long March 5B—a variant of the Long March 5 to be used for low-Earth orbit launches, including lofting modules for the country's space station—be used to launch the crewed spacecraft which would then rendezvous in LEO with the lunar spacecraft stack launched by the Long March 9 ahead of trans-lunar injection.

Toward this goal, two versions of a new generation crewed spacecraft are being developed, with a scale return-capsule test having been carried out in 2016. The debut of the Long March 5B, expected to follow a successful return-to-flight of the Long March 5, will include a new test related to the spacecraft in summer 2019.

Long also stated that the Long March 9 would be able to launch components for a space-based solar power system, a project which has been previously stated by senior Chinese aerospace and military figures to be under consideration.

Move to reusability
Long explained in the lecture that the Long March 8 would be CALT's first rocket to attempt first stage reusability, which will launch for the first time in 2021.

As previously reported, the Long March 8 is based on the existing Long March rockets, using a core very similar to that of the 3.35-meter-diameter Long March 7, a new-generation medium-lift rocket that had its maiden flight in 2016, with the second stage to be based on the 3-meter-diameter liquid hydrogen-liquid oxygen second stage of the older Long March 3A. The rocket will also use two solid propellant boosters, likely based on the Long March 11.

Long stated that both the first stage and boosters will attempt vertical landing.

The Long March 8 was originally intended to be an expendable rocket to increase China's lift capacity for launches to sun-synchronous orbits, but the plans have changed to allow China to experiment with vertical landing and reusability.

China launched its first satellite into space in 1970, with a Long March 1 putting the Dongfanghong-1 satellite into orbit. The country has since developed a series of Long March rockets, which take their name from a mythologized retreat by the Red Army of the Communist Party of China in the 1930s.

The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), which owns CALT, released a long-term space transportation roadmap in fall 2017 which stated 2035 as the target for achieving full reusability for its launch vehicles. Long did not, however, appear to comment on the possible reusability of the Long March 9.

Source: Xinhua| 2018-09-19 01:50:03|Editor: Mu Xuequan

BEIJING, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- China plans to launch the heavy-lift carrier rocket Long March-9 in 2028, said an official of China National Space Administration (CNSA) at the World Conference on Science Literacy 2018 on Tuesday.

Li Guoping, director of the Department of System Engineering of the CNSA, said that the length of the Long March-9 will exceed 90 meters, and the rocket would have a core stage with a diameter of 10 meters.

It would be able to carry a payload of 140 tonnes into low-Earth orbit, five times that of the Long March-5, said Li.

The rocket's capacity would also reach 50 tonnes for Earth-Moon transfer orbit.

China is also developing a medium space rocket, the Long March-8, which is expected to make its maiden flight in 2020.

The Long March rocket series have been launched 284 times, sending more than 400 spacecraft into space.

China completes compatibility test on core parts of rocket engine
Source: Xinhua | 2019-03-28 12:10:58 | Editor: Lu Hui

BEIJING, March 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese engineers have successfully carried out a compatibility test on the turbopump and gas generator of rocket engine on Sunday, according to China Daily on Thursday.

The engine will deliver 500 tonnes of thrust using a combination of liquid oxygen and kerosene, the paper quoted a statement of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp. as saying.

The test, conducted at a facility in Baolongyu area of Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, verified designs of the turbopump and gas generator and paved the way for the engine's overall testing, the statement said, noting that a turbopump is a core part of a rocket engine.

Meanwhile, the gas generator is like a miniature rocket engine inside a larger one and is tasked with igniting the whole engine, experts said.

The engine, which is under development at the Academy of Aerospace Propulsion Technology in Xi'an, will be the biggest and most powerful of its kind in China, the paper said.

It will be used on the Long March 9 super-heavy carrier rocket, which will be key to the country's future space exploration, such as a manned lunar mission, according to China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp.

Liu Zhirang, president of the academy in Xi'an, said the new engine will consume much more propellant than its predecessors and work under higher pressures and temperatures.

"So the materials to build it will be much stronger than those used in existing engines," Liu said. "In addition, the engine will employ newly developed advanced cooling devices. All of these will require state-of-the-art structural designs and outstanding welding techniques."

Russian.News.Cn
