Mission control in Houston just informed astronaut Alexander Gerst that they currently see a very slow pressure decay of around 0.6 millimeters of mercury (0.8 millibars) per hour.

The pressure loss rate varies, but there's a "constant depress" being monitored by mission control, the spacecraft communicator told Gerst.

Meanwhile, Russian engineers continue examining imagery and video recorded by cosmonauts of the hole inside the Soyuz MS-09 spacecraft. Officials continue assessing options for a permanent repair.

Back on the ISS, the crew is preparing sealant, readying some tape (patches from a medical case). So that's the repair plan. Tape/Patches/Sealant.

Engineers at Russia's mission control center near Moscow have instructed cosmonauts to repressurize the station's atmosphere with some additional air, then begin preparing a more permanent repair for the hole in the Soyuz MS-09 spacecraft docked to the complex.

The crew earlier this morning put tape over the hole causing the tiny pressure leak, but that is only a temporary fix.

NASA astro Drew Feustel is concerned about the Russian sealant plan and wants it passed on to MCC-Moscow. "We've got one shot at this and we don't want to screw it up". He wants a temp solution and then review for a permanent fix. Russians want to go for a permanent fix today.

Cosmonauts Oleg Artemyev and Sergey Prokopyev have repressurized the station with additional air to replace that which leaked out over the last few hours.

Mission controllers in Moscow are recommending the crew repair the damage site in the Soyuz spacecraft -- a hole measuring roughly 2 millimeters (0.08 inches) across -- using sealant applied with medical gauze.

Station commander Drew Feustel, a NASA astronaut, says he prefers to test the Russian repair procedure before applying the sealant to the hole. Flight engineer Alexander Gerst has asked mission control if using a rubber plug cut to fit the hole might be a good solution.

"We sort of feel like we've got one shot at it, and if we screw it up the implication is that that vehicle is going home sooner or later," Feustel radioed mission control in Houston.

While the crew is in no danger due to this tiny air leak, the Soyuz MS-09 capsule may have to return to Earth with its three-person crew -- Prokopyev, Gerst and NASA astronaut Serena Aunon-Chancellor -- if the hole can't be plugged.

The exact location of the hole on the Soyuz spacecraft has not been confirmed. The Soyuz MS-09 capsule arrived at the station in June and is rocked to the lab's Earth-facing Rassvet module.

Managers at the NASA and Roscosmos control centers in Houston and Moscow are discussing repair options at this time. There continues to be some debate about whether to go ahead with sealing the tiny hole on the Soyuz spacecraft, or to wait and assess other options.

Station commander Drew Feustel says he prefers to wait and consider various repair options before proceeding.

"I'm inclined to request that we have more time -- like 24 hours -- to talk about this," Feustel said.

There is no immediate danger on-board the station due to the very slow leak rate.

International Space Station Status
11:20 a.m. EDT Thursday, Aug. 30. 2018

The crew aboard the International Space Station is conducting troubleshooting and repair work today after the discovery of a tiny leak last night traced to the Russian segment of the orbital complex.

The leak, which was detected Wednesday night by flight controllers as the Expedition 56 crew slept, resulted in a small loss of cabin pressure. Flight controllers determined there was no immediate danger to the crew overnight. Upon waking at their normal hour, the crew's first task was to work with flight controllers at Mission Control in Houston and at the Russian Mission Control Center outside Moscow to locate the source of the leak.

The leak has been isolated to a hole about two millimeters in diameter in the orbital compartment, or upper section, of the Soyuz MS-09 spacecraft attached to the Rassvet module of the Russian segment. This is a section of the Soyuz that does not return to Earth.

The rate of the leak was slowed this morning through the temporary application of Kapton tape at the leak site. Flight controllers are working with the crew to develop a more comprehensive long-term repair.

Once the patching is complete, additional leak checks will be performed. All station systems are stable, and the crew is in no danger as the work to develop a long-term repair continues.

Wow! Long conversation about "Our partners have doubts" ends with "OK, we'll prepare the sealant".

And Drew sounds really down. And just asked "So I guess they are going with that plan after all".

MCC-H "We're still asking questions, but yes".

So it's a Russian win now.

The Russian space agency -- Roscosmos -- confirms the tiny hole discovered by the crew is in the orbital compartment of the Soyuz MS-09 spacecraft. The orbital module provides a habitation area for the crew during their trip to the station, and is jettisoned before re-entry to burn up on the atmosphere.

Station crews return to Earth inside a separate compartment of the Soyuz, the landing module.

Russian mission control wants the crew to use a wipe saturated in sealant to plug the tiny, 2-millimeter opening on the hull of the Soyuz spacecraft's orbital module.

Cosmonauts Oleg Artmeyev and Sergey Prokopyev have prepared the sealant in preparation for the repair.
