ЦитироватьChina launches new Beidou navigation satellite
XICHANG, Sichuan, July 10 (Xinhua) -- China sent a new Beidou navigation satellite into orbit on a Long March-3A rocket from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center, in the southwestern Sichuan Province, at 4:58 a.m. Tuesday.
The satellite is the 32nd of the Beidou navigation system, and one of the Beidou-2 family, which is the second generation of the system.
The launch was the 280th mission of the Long March rocket series.
China started to construct the third-generation of Beidou system in 2017, and eight Beidou-3 satellites are now in space.
So why launch another Beidou-2 satellite?
"The launch of a backup Beidou-2 satellite will ensure the system's continuous and stable operation," said Yang Hui, chief designer of the Beidou-2 series.
Named after the Chinese term for the Big Dipper constellation, Beidou aims to rival the U.S. GPS system, Russia's GLONASS and the European Union's Galileo as a global satellite navigation system. The project was formally launched in 1994. It began serving China in 2000 and the Asia-Pacific region in 2012.
Since then, the system has provided reliable and free, all-weather and all-time positioning, navigation and timing services to customers in the Asia-Pacific region and has never been out of service, according to the China Academy of Space Technology.
However, some of the Beidou-2 satellites are nearing the end of their lives and need to be replaced by backup satellites. China launched two backup satellites on March 30 and June 12, 2016.
This new backup is not a simple repeat of previous satellites, but has been upgraded to improve its reliability, said Yang.
It carries a rubidium clock, which is the key to the accuracy of its positioning and timing.
When China began reform and opening-up 40 years ago, its satellites mainly used costly imported rubidium clocks. After the launch of the Beidou program, the United States banned exports of rubidium clocks to China.
Sun Jiadong, chief designer of the Beidou system and an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, said China must depend on itself.
China's first self-developed rubidium clock was tested on a satellite in September 2006. The performance of China's rubidium clocks was improved on Beidou-2 satellites.
This year will see an intensive launch of Beidou satellites. The system is expected to provide navigation and positioning services to countries along the Belt and Road by late 2018. By around 2020, the Beidou system will go global.
The Beidou-3 satellites can send signals that are compatible with other satellite navigation systems and provide satellite-based augmentation, as well as search and rescue services in accordance with international standards. The positioning accuracy is 2.5 to 5 meters.
The Beidou system will coordinate with other technology, such as remote sensing, the Internet, big data and cloud computing, in future.
In the past five years, the system has helped rescue more than 10,000 fishermen. More than 40,000 fishing vessels and around 4.8 million commercial vehicles in China have been equipped with Beidou, said Beidou spokesperson Ran Chengqi.
China has sold more than 50 million domestically manufactured chips connected to the Beidou navigation and positioning system in the past five years.
By 2020, the value of China's satellite navigation business is expected to surpass 400 billion yuan (about 58 billion U.S. dollars), of which 240 billion to 320 billion yuan will go to the Beidou system, Ran said.

ЦитироватьFeature: Love navigated by Beidou
by Xinhua writers Yu Fei, Qu Ting
BEIJING, July 11 (Xinhua) -- They provide positioning and navigation to vehicles, ships, shared bicycles and drones, as well as tracking wild animals, and China's Beidou satellites have also guided a young couple to love.
Ten years ago, Cui Bo, a designer for the Beidou power system, wrote a poem lauding those dedicated to space exploration to mark the 40th anniversary of the founding of the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST). He met his colleague Wang Lu, who recited his poem at the anniversary ceremony.
Wang, a designer for the Beidou payloads, was just like the people in his poem: dedicating all her knowledge and efforts to the development of China's own satellites. They fell in love.
They had, in fact, both graduated from Beihang University, which specializes in aeronautical and astronautical education and research, but they hadn't known each other then.
Named after the Chinese term for the Big Dipper constellation, Beidou is a rival to the U.S. GPS system, Russia's GLONASS and the European Union's Galileo as a global satellite navigation system.
When China launched its first Beidou satellite in 2000, Wang and Cui watched the live broadcast of the liftoff on television at the university.
After graduation, they both had offers of high-paying jobs, but they both chose CAST.
"We chose to work here because we share a space dream," Wang said.
"We watched the launch of the first Beidou satellite at the same time, and now we are participating in the development of more Beidou satellites," Cui said. "It's our destiny."
Engaging in the development of the second generation of Beidou satellites, they worked together in the production of the first inclined geosynchronous orbit satellite, which was key to global coverage.
The pressure of work brought out the best in each other.
"He is enthusiastic about his work. He often dugs into a problem for a long time. He is also warm-hearted, sometimes he would design a simple program to share with his team to improve efficiency," Wang recalled. "He's cool."
"She is very smart," said Cui. "Once I took a long time solving a geometric problem, but she took just 30 seconds to show me a simpler and ingenious solution. She's even cooler than me!"
The pursuit of the same dream binds them.
The second generation of Beidou satellites began operating at the end of 2012. The system, then with 14 satellites, provided navigation, positioning and timing services to the Asia-Pacific region. The same year, Wang and Cui married.
The research team is responsible for the development of the satellites as well as in-orbit tests. If a satellite has a problem, they must resolve it quickly.
In September 2015, Cui was sent to Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi Province some 1,000 km southwest of Beijing, to work on the flight controls of a newly launched satellite. He couldn't return home for their baby's 100-day celebration, which is an important occasion in Chinese tradition. Wang, instead, took their baby to Xi'an, so that the three of them could celebrate together.
"I will never forget the moment I saw her coming, with our baby sleeping in her arm, dragging heavy luggage with the other," Cui said.
Since 2017, China has sent eight Beidou-3 satellites into space. By the end of 2018, the Beidou system will service countries along the Belt and Road route.
Young space engineers like Wang and Cui are the backbone of the system. The average age of the Beidou team in CAST is 36.
Over the past five years, the system has helped rescue more than 10,000 fishermen. More than 40,000 fishing vessels and around 4.8 million commercial vehicles in China are equipped with Beidou.
The system has lifted the output of precision agriculture by 5 percent, and curbed oil consumption by 10 percent. Beidou is also helping monitor the structural integrity of highways, pipelines, dams and bridges.
It is also part of the daily life. More than 300 million mobile phones, 40 percent of all smart phones in China, can connect to Beidou.
The system now covers more than 50 countries with a total population of more than 3 billion. By 2020, Beidou will have more than 30 satellites, providing first-class services around the globe.

A Long March 3B rocket carrying the 26th and 27th Beidou satellites lifts off from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre at 07:18 local time on January 12, 2018. Xinhua

China aims to add another seven satellites to its Beidou navigation and positioning system this year, according to the China Satellite Navigation Office (CNSO), with the aim of completing the 35-satellite network in the first half of 2020.

China has launched 11 Beidou satellites so far in 2018, contributing to an unprecedented launch cadence, and CNSO director Ran Chengqi recently told state media seven more would follow before the end of November.

The latest launch, at the end of August, saw the 35th and 36th Beidou satellites enter orbit, following the launch of the first in 2000.

The next launch is currently understood to be taking place around September 19 from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre in the southwestern province of Sichuan, though the first firm indication of imminent launch may come from airspace closure notices.

That, and two further similar launches, aim to place pairs of Beidou-3 (third phase for global coverage) satellites into medium Earth orbits (MEO). A further satellite will be sent to a geosynchronous orbit.

The completed Beidou system will have 27 satellites in MEO at around 22,000 km altitude, five in geostationary orbit and three more in inclined geosynchronous orbits, at 35,786 km, providing global GNSS coverage with a positioning accuracy of 2.5 metres.

It is being tied to the Belt and Road initiative, a signature project of Chinese president Xi Jinping, which includes a somewhat nebulous constellation of countries.

The Beidou navigation system, which takes its name from the Chinese asterism equivalent to the Plough or Big Dipper, is China's answer to the US Global Positioning System (GPS), Russia's GLONASS and Europe's Galileo GNSS constellations.

GNSS provide civilian applications such as navigation for shipping and road traffic, mapping and surveying, but also assist military forces from space, facilitating targeting, positioning and locating, and the synchronising of operations. The development of Beidou will end previous Chinese military reliance on GPS.

Xinhua last week reported that the industry associated with China's BeiDou navigation system has grown at over 20 percent year-on-year since 2009, and is expected to reach 400 billion yuan ($58.5 billion) by 2020.

A range of Beidou applications according to the China Navigation Satellite Office. CNSO

Beidou-3 medium earth orbit satellites are developed by either the Innovation Academy for Microsatellites of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) or the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST), a spacecraft designer and maker under the main contractor for the Chinese space programme, the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC).

CALT, another CASC institute, is responsible for the Long March 3A, 3B and 3C launch vehicles used for Beidou launches. The Long March 3B stands almost 55 metres high, with a diameter of 3.35 metres on the core stage. The launcher has a mass at liftoff of 458,970 kg, or just over 1 million pounds.

Beidou satellite launches to medium Earth orbits use a Long March 3B with an Yuanzheng-1 upper stage for direct insertion. However, the expended first stages often land near populated areas downrange as the rocket flies from its inland origin.

XICHANG, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday evening successfully sent twin BeiDou-3 navigation satellites into space on a single carrier rocket.

The Long March-3B carrier rocket lifted off from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center at 10:07 p.m. It was the 285th mission of the Long March rocket series.

The twin satellites are the 37th and 38th editions of the BeiDou navigation system. After a series of tests and evaluations, they will work together with 12 BeiDou-3 satellites already in orbit.

The twin satellites will provide danger alerts and navigation services for global users. A basic system with 18 orbiting BeiDou-3 satellites will be in place by the end of the year, which will serve countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative.

The satellites and the rocket for Wednesday's launch were developed by the China Academy of Space Technology and the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology, respectively.

Named after the Chinese term for the Big Dipper, the BeiDou system started serving China in 2000 and the Asia-Pacific region in 2012.
