Ariane 5 continues its track record of success with Arianespace's launch of Sky Muster™ II and GSAT-18

Ariane 5 begins its ascent from the Spaceport in French Guiana, carrying the Sky Muster™ II and GSAT-18 satellites for deployment in geostationary transfer orbit on today's mission.

Arianespace orbited two key telecommunications payloads for Australia and India on the 74th consecutive success for its heavy-lift Ariane 5 – confirming this workhorse vehicle's role as the launch services industry reference in availability, reliability and performance.

Conducted from the Spaceport in French Guiana, the daytime mission delivered an estimated payload lift performance of 10,660 kg. to geostationary transfer orbit. It carried Sky Muster™ II for Australian operator nbn™, and GSAT-18, which will be utilized by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
Sky Muster™ II was deployed first in the flight sequence, separating from Ariane 5 at 28 minutes after liftoff, followed four minutes later by GSAT-18.
Arianespace Chairman and CEO Stéphane Israël offered his congratulations to both customers – and everyone else involved with the successful mission – during post-launch comments from the Spaceport's Jupiter control room.
"It is now the fifth time this year that Ariane 5 has performed flawlessly, and this launch celebrates as well its 74th success in a row, now equaling [that of the predecessor] Ariane 4," Israël said. "Well done!"

Sky Muster™ II: Helping bridge the digital divide

The Ariane 5 for Flight VA231 is shown ready for its daytime liftoff.

Sky Muster™ II is the second satellite entrusted to Arianespace by nbn™ (following Sky Muster™ I, which was orbited in 2015 on an Ariane 5), as well as the eighth payload to be launched by the company for Australia.
Reflecting the country's political commitment to bridging the digital divide, particularly in rural and isolated regions, Sky Muster™ II will help extend high-speed internet across Australia, including the Norfolk, Christmas, Macquarie and Cocos islands. It carries Ka-band transponders and will operate from an orbital position of 135 to 150 deg. East.
The launch of Sky Muster™ II also continues a productive partnership between Arianespace and the satellite's prime contractor, SSL (Space Systems Loral) – marking the 59th SSL-built payload to be lofted on an Arianespace mission.

GSAT-18: Delivering telecommunications services for India
Highlighting another "long-term relationship," GSAT-18 was the 20th satellite orbited by Arianespace for the Indian Space Research Organisation. This cooperation extends back to 1981 with launch of the APPLE experimental satellite, and further underscores the strong collaboration France and India have set up in space.
Overall, Arianespace has won 86 percent of all geostationary launch contracts the country has opened to non-Indian launch systems – including those for GSAT-11 and GSAT-17, to be lofted on future missions from the Spaceport in French Guiana.
Carrying 12 transponders in Ku-band and another 24 in C-band, GSAT-18 will provide telecommunications services for India once in its final orbital position (74 deg. East), strengthening ISRO's current fleet of 14 operational satellites.

Continuing a busy year for Arianespace
Today's mission marked another on-target performance for Ariane 5, with the following estimated orbital parameters at injection:
 – Perigee: 250.2 km. for a target of 250.0 km.
 – Apogee: 35,965 km. for a target of 35,957 km.
 – Inclination: 6.01 deg. for a target of 6.00 deg.
Flight VA231 was Arianespace's eighth of 11 launches targeted in 2016, and follows other heavy-lift Ariane 5 missions performed this year on January 27 (carrying Intelsat 29e as a dedicated single payload), March 9 (EUTELSAT 65 West A), June 18 (EchoStar XVIII and BRIsat) and August 24 (Intelsat 33e and Intelsat 36).
Also conducted earlier in 2016 were medium-lift Soyuz missions on April 25 (with Sentinel-1B as the primary passenger) and May 24 (two Galileo constellation satellites); plus the September 15 light-lift Vega flight with a cluster of four SkySat satellites for U.S.-based operator Terra Bella and the Peruvian PerúSAT-1 spacecraft.
Arianespace's next mission is scheduled for November 17, when Ariane 5 will perform its first flight at the service of Europe's Galileo navigation system – launching a quartet of Full Operational Capability (FOC) satellites.

74th successful launch in a row for Ariane 5, equaling the record set by Ariane 4, and supporting the space ambitions of Australia and India

Arianespace has successfully launched the Sky Muster™ II satellite for Australian operator nbn (National Broadband Network) and the GSAT-18 satellite for the Indian space agency ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation).

The launch took place on October 5 at 5:30 pm (local time) from the Guiana Space Center (CSG) in Kourou, French Guiana.
Today's flight was the eighth of the year for Arianespace and the fifth by an Ariane 5 launcher, which logged its 74th successful mission in a row, equaling the record set by the predecessor Ariane 4 from 1995 to 2003.
With today's successful mission for Australia and India, Arianespace proudly supports two major national space programs.

Ariane 5 equals Ariane 4's record for successful launches in a row
This launch was the 74th success in a row for Ariane 5, equaling the record set by the Ariane 4 launcher from 1995 to 2003. Ariane 5 has carried out 74 consecutive successful missions, launching 145 payloads that weigh a cumulated total of more than 623 metric tons, including:

    [/li]
  • 133 main payloads, weighing 618 metric tons,
  • 12 secondary payloads, weighing 5 metric tons.
During this uninterrupted string of 74 launches, Ariane 5s have orbited 24 more satellites than Ariane 4 during this equivalent series of successes, launching a combined total of 348 metric tons into orbit. This unprecedented series of successful launches in the marketplace once again proves the exceptional availability and reliability of Arianespace's heavy-lift launcher.

Reducing the digital divide in Australia
Sky Muster™ II is the second satellite launched by Arianespace for the Australian operator nbn (National Broadband Network), owned by the Commonwealth of Australia. It is also the eighth satellite that Arianespace has launched for Australia, following Aussat 3, Optus C1/D1/D2/D3 and 10, and Sky Muster™ I, launched in September 2015.
Sky Muster™ II will help extend high-speed internet service to the entire country, including the Norfolk, Christmas, Macquarie and Cocos islands, in conjunction with the services currently delivered by Sky Muster™ I.
With Sky Muster™ II, the operator meets its objectives of developing the digital economy in Australia, bridging the digital divide between urban and rural areas, and enhancing connections between this vast territory and the rest of the world.

Arianespace, partner of ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation)
GSAT-18 is the 20th satellite from ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) to be launched by Arianespace. It will provide telecommunications services for India and bolsters ISRO's current fleet of 14 operational telecom satellites.
GSAT-18 will contribute to ISRO's mission of using space to help develop the Indian subcontinent through the deployment of all types of satellites (including Earth observation, telecommunications, broadcasts of educational programs, science and navigation).
Along with its own launch capacity, ISRO has entrusted Arianespace with its satellites for over 35 years, starting with the launch by Ariane 1 of the APPLE (Ariane Passenger Payload Experiment) experimental satellite in 1981. The current Arianespace order book includes two ISRO satellite launches in 2017: GSAT-11 and GSAT-17.
Shortly after the announcement of the orbital injection of the two satellites, Arianespace Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Stéphane Israël said: "With this fifth Ariane 5 launch in 2016, Arianespace proudly places its excellence at the service of two strategic space programs for Australia and India. We are especially honored to have been chosen by the Australian operator nbn to launch both of its satellites, and by ISRO, with our 20th launch for the Indian space agency today. I would also like to thank our long-standing partner SSL, which produced the Sky Muster™ II satellite.
"This 74th successful launch in a row by Ariane 5 equals the record set by Ariane 4. I would like to congratulate all our partners for this team success: the European Space Agency and the ESA member states participating in the Ariane program; our industrial prime contractor and lead shareholder, Airbus Safran Launchers as well as the entire European industry for Ariane; CNES/CSG along with all companies and staff at the launch base, who support us as we go from success to success. And of course, thanks to everybody at Arianespace for this eighth successful launch of 2016."
