CAPE CANAVERAL — The fifth and final satellite for the U.S. Navy's new mobile network to provide rugged smartphone communications to all branches of the military has arrived at the launch site for blastoff in May.
The Mobile User Objective System satellite No. 5, built to be an on-orbit spare, was flown aboard a C-5 Galaxy aircraft March 3 from its Lockheed Martin factory in Sunnyvale, California to Cape Canaveral, Florida.
Liftoff is targeted for May 5 atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket flying in its mightiest 551 configuration with five strap-on solid-fuel boosters.
The launch will be occur some time during an unclassified period that runs from 11:46 a.m. to 3:46 p.m. EDT.
The mission will complete the MUOS launch series that began in 2012 to form a global communications infrastructure in geosynchronous orbit 22,300 miles up. All the satellites have used the Atlas 5 to get into space.
MUOS 1 — Launched Feb. 24, 2012 (Coverage: Pacific Ocean region)
 MUOS 2 — Launched July 19, 2013 (Coverage: Continental U.S.)
MUOS 3 — Launched Jan. 20, 2015 (Coverage: Atlantic Ocean region)
MUOS 4 — Launched Sept. 2, 2015 (Coverage: Indian Ocean region)
MUOS 5 — Planned for May 5 (Coverage: Indian Ocean region)
"As MUOS-5's launch approaches, MUOS-4 is preparing to begin operations on-station, enabling MUOS' near-global coverage," said Mark Woempner, program director of Lockheed Martin's Narrowband Communications mission area.
"We are proud that we will soon be providing our mobile forces access to the system's enhanced communications capabilities from nearly anywhere, including further into polar regions than ever before."
MUOS is the nation's next-generation narrowband tactical satellite communications system, providing 3G cellphone features to warfighters on the move.

"Mobile forces, equipped with MUOS terminals, will soon be able to communicate with each other – including voice, data and exchanging imagery – real-time, virtually anywhere on the Earth," said Iris Bombelyn, Lockheed Martin's vice president for Narrowband Communications. "This is a tremendous upgrade in communications capabilities over what currently exists for our nation and our allies."
MUOS No. 5 was taken to the commercial Astrotech processing facility in Titusville to be unpacked from its shipping container. It will undergo final testing, the loading of maneuvering fuel and encapsulation in the rocket's 18-foot-diameter composite nose cone.
The Atlas 5 first stage and Centaur upper stage will be brought together starting in mid-April at the Vertical Integration Facility at Cape Canaveral's Complex 41. The satellite will be mounted on top to finish assembling the 206-foot-tall rocket at the end of April.
Atlas rockets have conducted 23 launches with communications satellites for the Navy since 1978.

CAPE CANAVERAL — As the internal investigation continues into the first stage performance trouble on the last Atlas 5 rocket launch, the next mission on the manifest has slipped to May 27.
Originally planned for May 5, the flight of the Navy's fifth and final planned Mobile User Objective System communications satellite has been postponed twice while engineers work to determine the exact cause of the anomaly.
The Atlas 5 rocket that launched the commercial Orbital ATK resupply ship to the International Space Station on March 22 experienced as early cutoff to the first stage by six seconds due to a "fuel system" problem.
The Centaur upper stage burned for a minute longer than scheduled to make up the velocity shortfall, ultimately achieving the correct orbit and deploying Cygnus.
The cargo freighter successfully rendezvoused with the space station and delivered over 7,000 pounds of supplies.
But needing to determine root cause of the premature first stage shutdown and devise any corrective actions on the following rockets led officials to delay the MUOS No. 5 launch, initially to May 12 and now to May 27.
Stacking of the rocket has not yet started the Vertical Integration Facility. The first stage remains at the Atlas Spaceflight Operations Center high bay.
The Lockheed Martin-built MUOS spacecraft remains at the Astrotech processing facility in Titusville.

United Launch Alliance suspends Atlas 5 flights

United Launch Alliance said on Wednesday its Atlas 5 rocket will need to be repaired before flights resume following an early engine shutdown on its last mission.
"There will be corrective action," Tory Bruno, chief executive of the Lockheed Martin-Boeing partnership told Reuters in an interview at the Space Symposium in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
"I'm still confident that we're going to get all the missions off within a year, but there's going to be a little shuffling around," Bruno said.

ЦитироватьCAPE CANAVERAL — The revised Atlas 5 rocket firing order includes two national security missions this summer before launching NASA's daring asteroid sampler mission in September as originally planned.
That's the schedule the United Launch Alliance managers have devised to get their workhorse booster flying again after pausing to review a valve problem on the most recent flight.
Although successfully placing the commercial Cygnus cargo freighter into orbit for the International Space Station and customer Orbital ATK on March 22, an anomaly with the Mixture Ration Control Valve on the first stage reduced the flow of RP-1 kerosene fuel.
Engineers are developing an inspection plan to examine the valve and actuator now that the next rocket has been hoisted vertically atop its mobile launcher platform. The checks will verify the valve assembly meets engineering requirements.
That next launch is targeted for June 24 using the most powerful version of the Atlas 5, known as the 551 configuration, with five side-mounted solid boosters for two-and-a-half million pounds of liftoff thrust.
The payload is the U.S. Navy's Mobile User Objective System satellite No. 5, the final piece of the planned global constellation to provide voice, data and video communications to troops on the move.
Stacking of the vehicle began on April 22 at the Vertical Integration Facility at Cape Canaveral's Complex 41. Last week was spent attaching all five of the solid rocket boosters, and the Centaur upper stage was mated on Monday.

ЦитироватьULA also has confirmed a June 24 date for the next launch of its Atlas V rocket, which will fly from Launch Complex 41 in its most powerful configuration.
Five solid rocket boosters will combine with the rocket's Russian RD-180 main engine to produce about 2.5 million pounds of thrust, lifting a heavy Navy communications satellite on its way to an orbit more 22,300 miles over the equator.
Liftoff is scheduled for 10:30 a.m., at the opening of a 44-minute window.
Once planned for early May, ULA has delayed the mission about seven weeks due to an early engine shutdown during the most recent Atlas V flight on March 22.
The RD-180 shut down six seconds too soon during that launch of International Space Station supplies, but the upper-stage engine burned for an extra minute to successfully complete the mission.
ULA engineers concluded a faulty valve prevented the main engine from burning enough kerosene fuel, and planned to inspect their entire engine inventory for any similar flaws.
Amid that work, the rocket now targeting a June 24 launch has been stacked in its processing tower and awaits delivery of the Navy's fifth Mobile User Objective System satellite.
After the delay, ULA is sorting out the timing of as many as nine more missions it could launch this year from Cape Canaveral and California.
