ЦитироватьJason-3 is the fourth mission in U.S.-European series of satellite missions that measure the height of the ocean surface. Scheduled to launch in 2015, the mission will extend the time series of ocean surface topography measurements (the hills and valleys of the ocean surface) begun by the TOPEX/Poseidon satellite mission in 1992 and continuing through the currently operating Jason-1 (launched in 2001) and OSTM/Jason-2 (launched in 200 8)  missions. These measurements provide scientists with critical information about circulation patterns in the ocean and about both global and regional changes in sea level and the climate implications of a warming world.

The primary instrument on Jason-3 is a radar altimeter. The altimeter will measure sea-level variations over the global ocean with very high accuracy (as 1.3 inches or 3.3 centimeters, with a goal of achieving 1 inch or 2.5 centimeters). Continual, long-term, reliable data of changes in ocean surface topography will be generated and will be used by scientists and operational agencies (NOAA, European weather agencies, marine operators, etc.) for scientific research and operational oceanography for the benefit of society.

Launch of the Jason-3 satellite delayed. New launch date will be announced after more spacecraft testing.

ЦитироватьThe launch of the Jason-3 mission will not occur July 22, as announced previously. During spacecraft testing, engineers located contamination in one of the four thrusters on the spacecraft. The problem thruster has been replaced. An investigation into the contamination will continue during the next two weeks, as the new thruster is tested.

Jason-3 Launch Delayed Due To Thruster Contamination
02-Jun-2015
Launch of the U.S.-European Jason-3 ocean altimetry satellite has been postponed because contamination was found in one of the spacecraft's four thrusters. Launch was scheduled for July 22.  A new launch date was not  announced.
Jason-3 is the first operational ocean altimetry mission and will be used to track global sea level rise.  NOAA and the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) are the lead agencies, with NASA and its French counterpart, CNES, as partners.
NASA and CNES built and launched three predecessors: Topex/Poseidon, launched in 1992; Jason-1 (2001); and Jason-2 (2008 ), which is still operating.   NOAA and EUMETSAT were partners with NASA and CNES on Jason-2 and took over as the leads for Jason-3 as this type of observation transitioned from research to operations.
Jason-3's problem thruster has been replaced and is undergoing testing, NOAA says.  Meanwhile, the investigation into how it became contaminated continues.
Thales Alenia Space was chosen by CNES as the spacecraft contractor in 2010.  At the time, launch was anticipated in July 2013.  They also are providing the spacecraft's primary instrument, the Poseidon-3B altimeter.   The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) built Jason-3's microwave radiometer, GPS and laser ranging reflector and procured the launch, which will be from Vandenberg Air Force Base, CA.   JPL selected SpaceX to launch Jason-3.

ЦитироватьAccording to Mr. Musk, officials have asked for "repeated, successful" demonstrations of a first stage landing on the drone ship before a landing attempt will be allowed at the Cape.
ЦитироватьAlthough no announcement has been made of her expected operational date, the upcoming Jason-3 mission from Vandenberg would be her first opportunity to attempt a stage recovery.
SpaceX has said they hoped to be permitted to attempt a return-to-launch-site landing of the first stage at Vandenberg, but to date it appears that permission may not yet have been granted, and the landing pad that would be used for such an attempt at SLC-4W was shown in a recent photo to consist only of graded earth with the concrete pad not yet poured.

Похоже шансов на то что в этом пуске будет попытка посадки на сушу не так уж много.

An international oceanography satellite arrived at its California launch base fr om a factory in France on Thursday for fueling, testing and other final preps before its scheduled Aug. 8 blastoff on a Falcon 9 rocket.
Packed inside a specialized shipping container, the Jason 3 spacecraft journeyed from a Thales Alenia Space assembly plant in Cannes, France, to Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, the prime U.S. launch site for Earth observing satellites.
The craft touched down on Vandenberg's runway aboard a Boeing 747F freighter at 1734 GMT (1:34 p.m. EDT; 10:34 a.m. PDT), according to an upd ate posted on NASA's website.
Ground crews planned to transport the satellite to SpaceX's payload processing facility at Space Launch Complex 4-East after offloading the spacecraft from the cargo plane.
Technicians from Thales and SpaceX will prepare the satellite for launch. Inspections, fueling and mating with the Falcon 9 booster are scheduled over the next six weeks.
The shipment of Jason 3 from France to California was delayed to complete an investigation into salt contamination discovered in one of the four rocket thrusters on the spacecraft.
The technical issue has been resolved, according to NOAA, which leads the U.S. contribution to the joint mission. The problem triggered a launch delay from July 22.
Liftoff of the Falcon 9 rocket with Jason 3 is se t for 0347 GMT on Aug. 9 (11:47 p.m. EDT; 8:47 p.m. PDT on Aug. 8), a NASA spokesperson said.

Eumetsat, the operator of Europe's weather satellites, is NOAA's partner on the Jason 3 mission. The French space agency — CNES — contracted with Thales Alenia Space to build the Jason 3 satellite platform, and NASA managed the purchase of instruments and launch services for the $350 million mission.
The Falcon 9 rocket will deploy Jason 3 into orbit 830 miles above Earth, wh ere the 1,124-pound spacecraft will measure the ocean roughness, sea level and wave heights around the world.
The data will contribute to climate change predictions, hurricane forecasting, tide prediction, and the development of long-range El Nino and La Nina outlooks. Marine biologists, emergency responders and maritime companies could also use Jason 3 measurements, scientists said.
The mission is the fourth in a line of sea surface topography satellites launched since 1992. It will replace the Jason 2 satellite launched in 2008.
Jason 3 marks SpaceX's first flight under the management of NASA's Launch Services Program, the agency's rocket procurement division which conducts engineering oversight for launches of Earth science observatories, astronomy missions and interplanetary probes.
The launch experts provide an extra layer of oversight, helping allow NASA to self-insure launches of its research spacecraft. Commercial satellite operators normally purchase insurance coverage ahead of their launches.
The launch of Jason 3 will be SpaceX's second flight from Vandenberg. The company's first launch from the West Coast launch facility occurred in September 2013.
