Alpha Flight 2: To The Black is Firefly's second technology demonstration flight that will attempt to launch multiple satellites to low Earth orbit (LEO) from our launch site (SLC-2) at Vandenberg Space Force Base. Alpha will first insert into an elliptical transfer orbit, coast to apogee, and perform a circularization burn.
Timing: Launch window opens on September 11th, 2022, at 3:00 PM PST
Location: Firefly SLC-2, Vandenberg Space Force Base, CA
Altitude: 300 km
Inclination: 137 deg

- Class: 3U CubeSat
- Dimensions: 32cm x 10cm x 10cm
- Mass: 1.67Kg
Mission: To collect flight data during the mission and make it available to the educational community for analysis and comparison to data collected on other flights and vehicles. Typical data collected: Atmospheric pressure, Temperature, and Radiation via a matched pair of Geiger counters, one wrapped in experimental radiation protection material, one unwrapped |

- Mass: 4.15kg
Mission: The TechEdSat-15 (TES-15) mission is a NASA-owned, in coordination with San Jose State, 3U CubeSat. It is equipped with a deployable exo-brake, an exo-atmospheric braking device. The TES-15 design is a 'hot,' articulated exo-brake that allows for de-orbit targeting through drag-modulation and deeper penetration into the atmosphere to validate COM systems for future Entry Design Landing (EDL) system flights. The exo-brake will deploy after the CubeSat is ejected from its dispenser to deorbit the CubeSat. In addition, other experiments include the Beacon And Memory Board Interface (BAMBI), which optimizes internal and external data transfer from the nano-sat. |

During Alpha's debut flight last September, one of the rocket's four Reaver engines stopped firing after an electrical connector failed, closing one of the engine's main propellant valves. This sent a signal to the Reaver engine to shut down.
After the flight, Firefly engineers found that pins inside the electrical conductor had been subjected to higher than anticipated vibrations and sheared off. "Because this was a unique vibrational environment, this is probably a phenomenon we could only see in flight," Markusic said.
He explained that the engines on Alpha were some of the first Reavers the company had built, and they "ran a little rougher" than recent engines the company has built. Because the newer flight engines operate with fewer vibrations, he does not think the problem of the electrical pins shearing off will recur.
Nevertheless, the company has taken the precaution of moving the electrical conductor higher on the vehicle, where there are fewer vibrations, and also given it a dedicated mounting bracket to further isolate it. "That problem is not going to happen again," Markusic said.

Mission update: 5 days in & we're really pleased with the data we've received so far. Our primary objective for Alpha FLTA002 was to achieve a pre-defined elliptical orbit following the second stage burn. This was 100% successful.
·
As a secondary objective, we performed a 2nd stage re-light test and successfully deployed the demonstration payloads. The re-light beat our expectations for the mission, primarily serving as an opportunity to collect data for our next flight.
·
Preliminary reviews show we will only require minor tweaks for our next mission, all while providing valuable scientific and technical data to our demonstration customers.
