Rocket Lab To Launch Commercial Earth-Imaging Rideshare Mission For Planet, Canon Electronics
This rideshare mission will be Electron's 15th launch overall and fifth in 2020, making Electron the second most-frequently launched U.S. rocket this year.
Long Beach, California. 21 September, 2020 – Leading space systems company, Rocket Lab, has today announced its next Electron launch will be a rideshare mission to low Earth orbit for Planet and Spaceflight Inc.'s customer Canon Electronics.
The mission – named 'In Focus' in a nod to the Earth-imaging satellites onboard – will lift-off in October from Rocket Lab's private orbital launch site, Launch Complex 1, in New Zealand. The mission will deploy a total of 10 satellites to precise and individual orbits. The mission will be Rocket Lab's 15th launch overall and fifth mission of 2020, making Electron the second most-frequently launched United States orbital rocket this year.
Earth-imaging company Planet has nine of their latest generation SuperDove satellites booked on the mission for deployment to a 500km morning-crossing Sun Synchronous Orbit (SSO). Each of the nine SuperDoves will be integrated with and deployed from Rocket Lab's Maxwell dispensers, the industry's lightest CubeSat dispenser in its class. Planet's Flock 4e' of SuperDoves will join the company's constellation of Earth-observation satellites already on orbit providing medium-resolution global coverage and near-daily revisit.
The 10th and final payload aboard this mission, Canon Electronics Inc.'s CE-SAT-IIB, was arranged by satellite rideshare and mission management provider Spaceflight Inc. CE-SAT-IIB is a technical demonstration microsatellite developed by Canon Electronics Inc. It has a middle-size telescope equipped with an ultra-high sensitivity camera to take night images of the Earth and small size telescopes which are suitable for CubeSat use.
Rocket Lab's founder and CEO, Peter Beck, says the mission demonstrates the industry-leading flexibility Electron provides to small satellite operators by deploying multiple spacecraft to their various target destinations even when flying as part of a rideshare.
"With Electron, we designed a launch system that makes access to space easy and puts our customers in the driver's seat of their missions, and we're proud to be delivering on that even through times of global disruption."
Rocket Lab has multiple missions scheduled for the remainder of 2020, including an upcoming launch in Q4 earmarked for the company's first Electron first stage recovery attempt. The Electron's first stage will be equipped with new hardware, including a reaction control system and an in-house designed parachute system, to orient the booster during its re-entry descent and slow down the first stage before a soft landing in the ocean where it will be collected by a ship.

Nine SuperDoves Scheduled for Flight on Rocket Lab's Electron
Planet's next scheduled launch of Flock 4e', a total of 9 SuperDoves on Rocket Lab's Electron, is currently planned for the first half of October and will lift off from Rocket Lab Launch Complex 1 on the Māhia Peninsula in New Zealand. Emerging from the unfortunate launch accident of Flock 4e (https://www.planet.com/pulse/rocket-lab-electron-launch-failure-five-superdoves/)' on Electron in July, this next launch speaks to both Planet and Rocket Lab's resilience and agility to get back on the pad so quickly. These SuperDoves will be deployed into an approximate 500 km morning-crossing Sun Synchronous Orbit (SSO), joining the rest of the flock already providing unprecedented medium-resolution global coverage and revisit.

This will be the 15th flight of Rocket Lab's Electron and the third time they'll be carrying Planet satellites. Rocket Lab named this mission "In Focus" in a nod to the Earth-imaging satellites onboard, and we couldn't be more excited to be launching from New Zealand again.

Now less than 90 minutes until liftoff. Launch of Rocket Lab's Electron booster is on track for 5:14 p.m. EDT (2114 GMT; 10:14 a.m. New Zealand time).
The two-stage, nearly 60-foot-tall (18-meter) Electron launcher will power off the launch pad on Mahia Peninsula, located on New Zealand's North Island, with 50,400 pounds of thrust from nine Rutherford main engines. After heading downrange toward the south over the Pacific Ocean, the Electron rocket will shut down and jettison its first stage before igniting a single Rutherford upper stage engine at T+plus 2 minutes, 37 seconds.
The launch vehicle's carbon composite nose fairing will jettison at T+plus 3 minutes, 9 seconds, once the Electron climbs above the dense lower layers of the atmosphere.
A few minutes later, two battery packs that power the Rutherford engine's turbopumps will separate after the rocket completes an in-flight "hot swap" to a new battery set. Shutdown of the Rutherford engine is planned at T+plus 8 minutes, 54 seconds, after placing the Electron in a preliminary transfer orbit.
Eight seconds later, at T+plus 9 minutes, 2 seconds, the Electron's second stage will release a Curie kick stage to begin a coast period lasting more than 40 minutes. The Curie's liquid-fueled thruster -- burning a "green" non-toxic propellant -- will ignite to place the 10 small satellites for Canon and Planet into their targeted 310-mile-high (500-kilometer) orbit inclined 97.5 degrees to the equator.
The Curie stage's burn will last more than two minutes, setting the stage for deployment of the 10 payloads about an hour after liftoff.

T-minus 15 minutes. There are 10 satellites on-board the Electron rocket.
The largest spacecraft on today's mission is CE-SAT-2B, an Earth observation satellite for Canon Electronics of Japan.
The 78-pound (35.5-kilogram) microsatellite is sitting on top of the rocket. CE-SAT-2B is Canon's third microsatellite to launch, following an experimental spacecraft that launched in 2017 on an Indian PSLV rocket and a follow-on satellite that launched in July on a previous Rocket Lab mission.
The CE-SAT 1B satellite that launched in July was destroyed when Rocket Lab's Electron rocket failed before reaching orbit.
According to Canon, CE-SAT-2B carries three types of cameras to be demonstrated in orbit.
"With the newly developed super high sensitivity camera, CE-SAT-2B is capable of observing the Earth during night time," Canon said in a press release. "The satellite is equipped with three types of cameras including Canon's mirrorless camera and compact digital camera.
"CE-SAT-2B will go through a two-year demonstration experiment for forthcoming production of cassegrain reflectors as series," Canon said.
Spaceflight, a Seattle-based launch broker, arranged for the launch of CE-SAT-2B with Rocket Lab.

Nine SuperDove Earth-imaging satellites — each about the size of a large shoebox — are stowed inside Maxwell deployers on top of the Electron rocket. The SuperDove payloads, built and owned by Planet, will replace five similar satellites — collectively known as "Flock 4e"– that were also lost on Rocket Lab's failed mission in July.
"Emerging from the unfortunate launch accident of Flock 4e on Electron in July, this next launch speaks to both Planet and Rocket Lab's resilience and agility to get back on the pad so quickly," Planet wrote in a blog post on its website. "These SuperDoves will be deployed into an approximate 500 km (310-mile-high) morning-crossing sun synchronous orbit (SSO), joining the rest of the flock already providing unprecedented medium-resolution global coverage and revisit."

Rocket Lab
Rocket Lab.

Successful Launch of Flock 4e' on Rocket Lab's Electron
On October 28, 2020 Rocket Lab successfully launched Flock 4e', nine latest-generation SuperDoves, on the Electron rocket from their New Zealand launch site. The Flock 4e' SuperDoves were deployed into an approximately 500 km, morning-crossing Sun Synchronous Orbit (SSO), joining the rest of the constellation providing medium-resolution Earth imagery with unprecedented coverage and frequency of update.
These nine SuperDoves are equipped with 8 spectral bands that provide high image quality and accurate surface reflectance values for advanced algorithms and time-series analysis. Planet's SuperDoves are also interoperable with publicly available imagery, like Copernicus' Sentinel-2, enabling innovative applications and use cases.

Mahia, New Zealand. 29 October 2020 – Rocket Lab, a space systems company and the global leader in dedicated small satellite launch, has successfully launched its 15th Electron mission and deployed Earth-imaging satellites for Planet and Spaceflight Inc. customer Canon Electronics. The mission was Rocket Lab's fifth for this year, making Electron the second-most frequently flown U.S. launch vehicle in 2020.
The 'In Focus' mission launched from Rocket Lab Launch Complex 1 on New Zealand's Māhia Peninsula at 21:21 UTC, 28 October 2020. The Electron launch vehicle successfully deployed ten commercial small satellites to a 500km circular orbit, bringing the total number of payloads deployed by Rocket Lab to 65.
The payloads on 'In Focus' included the latest flock of Planet's Earth-imaging SuperDove small satellites, each integrated with and deployed from Rocket Lab's Maxwell satellite dispensers. Flock 4e' bolsters Planet's constellation of Earth-observation satellites already on orbit providing medium-resolution global coverage and near-daily revisit. Canon Electronic's mission objective with their CE-SAT-IIB microsatellite is to demonstrate the company's Earth-imaging capability with a middle-size telescope equipped with an ultra-high sensitivity camera to take night images of the Earth and small size telescopes suitable for CubeSat use.
"Congratulations to Planet on the addition of their latest SuperDoves to their constellation and to the team at Canon Electronics on the deployment of their latest tech demonstration satellite," said Rocket Lab founder and CEO, Peter Beck. "Electron has once again delivered a smooth ride to orbit and precise deployment for our individual rideshare customers. Continuing to launch in the face of global disruption and adversity, while at the same time becoming the second-most frequently flown U.S. launch vehicle this year, is the latest display our dedication in providing ongoing, easy access to space for our customers.
Details about the customers onboard Rocket Lab's 16th Electron launch will be announced shortly, with the next mission scheduled to take place from Launch Complex 1 in the coming weeks.

Canon Electronics.

We just made in-space transportation even easier. After deploying 10 sats to perfect orbits for our customers on the #InFocus (https://twitter.com/hashtag/InFocus?src=hashtag_click) mission, the Kick Stage had one more trick up its sleeve. For the first time, we demonstrated a plane change maneuver.

Rocket Lab demonstrates flexible in-space transportation with new Kick Stage maneuver
Rocket Lab's Kick Stage successfully completed plane change in orbit for the first time, further demonstrating the Kick Stage's ability to enable custom orbits for small sats
This week Rocket Lab demonstrated an advanced capability of its Kick Stage acting as a space tug during the company's 15th launch, the 'In Focus' mission that launched satellites for Planet and Canon on October 28th UTC.
Shortly after deploying ten customer satellites to orbit, the Kick Stage's Curie engine reignited to maneuver the stage to a new inclination. While Rocket Lab has previously demonstrated orbit-raising maneuvers, this mission was the first time Kick Stage performed an inclination change, a capability increasingly sought by small satellites that require custom and unique orbits even when flying as part of a rideshare. The now flight-proven capability enables more flexibility for small satellite operators and opens up a wider range of inclinations achievable from Rocket Lab's two launch sites, Launch Complex 1 in New Zealand and Launch Complex 2 in Virginia, USA.
The mission was the latest demonstration of the Kick Stage's in-space transportation capabilities, which span deploying satellites to precise orbits as well as orbit raising or lowering, inclination changes, and de-orbit capability. Each of these capabilities have now been demonstrated in-flight across 15 Electron missions. The Kick Stage can also fly on other launch vehicles to deliver standalone in-space transportation as a tug.
"Small satellites have long needed a way to bridge the gap between being dropped off in space by the launch vehicle and that last home stretch to reach the target orbit. The Kick Stage delivers that flexibility, providing in-space transportation to get satellites exactly where they need to go, every time, whether flying on Electron or another vehicle," says Rocket Lab founder and CEO, Peter Beck.

Electron 15's Kick Stage is in a 507 x 524 km x 96.65 deg orbit, while the main payload is in a 507 x 524 km x 97.50 deg orbit, so their burn gave them a 1 degree plane change.
