The launch campaign began Friday, Sept. 11, when the first stage was delivered to the Vertical Integration Facility (VIF) and hoisted upright for the Launch Vehicle on Stand (LVOS) milestone.<br /><br />Crane operators lifted the 107-foot (33-meter) long rocket off its over-the-road transportation gear, then rotated the bronze-colored stage 90 degrees for delicate maneuvering onto the Mobile Launch Platform (MLP) pedestals.

The following days featured the first attachment of GEM 63 solid-propellant motors to an Atlas V. The NROL-101 launch incorporates three strap-on boosters to augment the lifting capacity of rocket's first stage.

The Graphite Epoxy Motors (GEMs) are a lower-cost alternative to the AJ60 solid rocket boosters used by Atlas V since 2003. Northrop Grumman, a strategic partner of ULA, produced more than a thousand GEMs for Delta rockets over the past three decades and will now supply GEM 63s for Atlas as a stepping-stone for using GEM 63XLs on ULA's next-generation Vulcan Centaur rocket.

The boosters are named for their diameter, which is 63 inches (1.6 meters). They will provide the same level of power as the previous Atlas V solids, but are more affordable, offer a streamlined installation process and compile flight experience in preparation for Vulcan Centaur's first flight next year.

GEM 63s will be added to future Atlas V missions throughout 2021 using a pre-defined schedule to complete a full transition in the near future.

Each of the GEMs, weighing nearly 100,000 pounds (45,000 kg), were trucked to the VIF on flatbed trailers and hoisted by crane into the building for connection to Atlas. Two were mounted to the south-side of the first stage and the third was attached to the north-side.

How can a such a seemingly unbalanced launch vehicle fly properly? The answer starts with the solid rocket boosters' stationary nozzles. They align with the overall rocket's center of gravity, and the Atlas V's dual-nozzle main engine provides ample control authority to steer the rocket smoothly through the sky.

Initial build up of the NROL-101 launch vehicle was achieved on Friday, Sept. 18 when technicians raised and attached a pre-assembled structure featuring the interstage, Centaur upper stage and lower halves of the payload fairing.

The rocket is known as the Atlas V 531 configuration. It includes a five-meter-diameter (17.7-foot) payload fairing, three solid rocket boosters and one engine on the high-performance Centaur.

Comprehensive testing of the rocket will be performed for the next few weeks to ensure all systems are ready before the payload to be mounted atop the Atlas V. The fully stacked rocket and payload, standing 206 feet (63 meters) tall, will ride the MLP from the VIF to Space Launch Complex-41 the day prior to the countdown and launch.

Liftoff is planned for later this year. This will be our 30th mission for the NRO.

An Atlas V rocket spent two days at the launch pad this week for a practice countdown to test flight and ground systems in preparation for the upcoming NROL-101 mission for the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO).

Known as a Wet Dress Rehearsal (WDR), the joint ULA, Space Force and NRO team successfully completed the test that demonstrated the rocket's rollout and day-of-launch countdown operations.

The assembled rocket -- without the payload attached -- rode the Mobile Launch Platform (MLP) from the Vertical Integration Facility (VIF) to Space Launch Complex-41 (SLC-41) on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

After reaching the pad, the first stage was loaded with its flight supply of 25,000 gallons of RP-1, a highly refined kerosene. That fuel will remain inside the rocket through launch day, a standard practice for Atlas rockets that undergo a WDR.

The countdown, on Wednesday, Oct. 21, was initiated just before dawn by the team of console operators stationed in the Launch Control Center at the Atlas Spaceflight Operations Center.

The rocket stages were powered up, guidance system testing conducted and final preps to ground systems accomplished, enabling approval for cryogenic tanking. About 66,000 gallons of liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen filled the rocket's tanks using the same procedures that will be executed on the actual launch day.

During the standard built-in hold at T-minus 4 minutes, readiness polls of the engineering support team, mission managers and the launch team culminated with a "go" to enter terminal count.

The final phase of the countdown progressed smoothly as the rocket's propellant tanks were topped off and pressurized, the stages placed on internal power, systems armed, and the traditional "Go Atlas," "Go Centaur," "Go NROL-101" declared in the final status check at T-minus 25 seconds. All planned activities were completed through the scheduled cutoff point just prior to ignition.

The rocket was safed and cryogenic tanks drained to conclude the test. The rocket returned to the VIF on Thursday, Oct. 22 after the hardware warmed up and the MLP could be disconnected from the pad facility.

WDRs are milestones meant to mitigate any issues before the actual launch day arrives. ULA performs WDRs for all planetary launches and select missions when requested by the customer.

The next event in the launch processing campaign will be NROL-101 payload's arrival at the VIF for hoisting atop the Atlas V.

Tory Bruno says the launch of Atlas V with NROL-101 will "likely" occur before the next Delta IV Heavy/NROL-44 launch attempt.

Atlas V will fly in the 531 configuration, using the new Northrop Grumman GEM-63 solid rocket boosters for the first time.

The encapsulated payload was delivered to the Vertical Integration Facility (VIF) at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station today. ULA's payload transport vehicle positioned its cargo beneath the VIF crane that hoisted NROL-101 through the doorway and atop the Atlas V.

The completed launch vehicle now stands 206 feet (63 meters) tall. Once fully fueled during the countdown, Atlas V will weigh nearly one million pounds (453,600 kg).

The NROL-101 launch furthers ULA's steadfast partnership with the NRO for U.S. national security. This space asset will support the NRO's overall national security mission to provide intelligence data to the United States' senior policy makers, the Intelligence Community and Department of Defense.

More than half of Atlas V launches to date -- 56 percent -- have successfully deployed national security space payloads into orbit.

For the NROL-101 mission, ULA is using the Atlas V 531 variant that features a five-meter-diameter payload fairing, three side-mounted solid rocket boosters and a single RL10 engine on the Centaur upper stage. This will be the inaugural use of Graphite Epoxy Motors (GEM 63) solid-fuel boosters on an Atlas V.

This will be ULA's 141st mission and our 29th for the NRO. It also marks the 86th flight of Atlas V and fourth in the 531 configuration.

Liftoff on Nov. 3 is scheduled during a period of 5:30 to 8:10 p.m. EST.

Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla., (Oct. 30, 2020) – A United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V rocket is in final preparations to launch the NROL-101 mission for the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO). The launch is on track for Nov. 3 from Space Launch Complex-41 from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Launch is planned for 5:58 p.m. EST. The live launch broadcast begins at 5:38 p.m. EST on Nov. 3 at www.ulalaunch.com (http://www.ulalaunch.com/).

"ULA is proud to play a pivotal role in support of our mission partners and national security by keeping our country safe one launch at a time," said Gary Wentz, ULA vice president of Government and Commercial Programs. "We thank our mission partners for their continued trust and teamwork. The NROL-101 mission will be ULA's 29th mission launched for the National Reconnaissance Office and the 17th NRO mission launched on an Atlas V."

The mission will launch on an Atlas V 531, a rocket that delivers unique capacity and the performance required for a range of mission types. The 531 configuration launched the first three Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF) satellites for the United States Space Force and will loft a pair of C-band satellites for SES in 2022.

The NROL-101 mission will be the first ULA launch flying the new Northrop Grumman Graphite Epoxy Motors (GEM) 63 solid rocket boosters that burn solid propellant and augment the lifting capacity of rocket's first stage. The GEM 63s measure 63 in. (1.6 meters) in diameter and 66 ft. (20.11 meters) in length. They will be ignited at the launch pad and burn for 94 seconds, each consuming 97,500 pounds (44,225.2 kg) of propellant to produce 371,550 pounds (1.6 mega-Newtons) of max thrust to augment the 860,200 pounds (3.83 mega-Newtons) of thrust produced by the RD-180 main engine to power the Atlas V rocket skyward. At liftoff, the combined thrust will be nearly 1.8 million pounds or 8 million mega-Newtons.

The Atlas V 531 configuration includes a 17 ft. (5 meter) payload fairing and stands 206 ft. (63 meters) tall. The Atlas booster for this mission is powered by the RD AMROSS RD-180 engine. Aerojet Rocketdyne provided the RL10C-1 engine for the Centaur upper stage.

This will be the 86th launch of the Atlas V rocket and the 71st Atlas V to launch from Space Launch Complex-41 in Florida. To date ULA has launched 140 times with 100 percent mission success.

In am a bit puzzled by this launch. Launch azimuth is for  a 56-degree orbit. Molniya would require a dog-leg then (certainly possible). The last hazard area (one of four, so one would expect this to be for the Centaur) is in an odd location.

Some Lacrosse/Onyx radar satellites were launched into 57° orbits.  While the next gen. Topaz Block 1 satellites all went to retrograde orbits, phps this is Topaz Block2 satellite, reverting to the old 57° orbit. Topaz Bl 1 also used the medium 5m fairing, but an Atlas V-501

Weather 80% GO for Tuesday's Launch

Launch Weather Officer Jessica Williams' initial forecast for Tuesday's 5:58 p.m. EST (2258 UTC) launch of Atlas V and the NROL-101 mission indicates an 80 percent chance of favorable conditions. Ground winds are the only concern.

"For launch day Tuesday, strong high pressure over the northern Gulf states weakens and moves east into the Carolina's. In response, winds are forecast to be sustained near 18 knots with gusts to 25 knots from the northeast through early evening on Tuesday. The onshore winds will bring stable scattered stratocumulus clouds with little to no threat of cloud violations," the launch weather team says.

The operations forecast includes scattered low-level clouds, good visibility, northeasterly winds 18 to 25 knots and a temperature near 74 degrees F.

If the launch is delayed to Wednesday for some reason, there is a 70 percent chance of good conditions.

"For backup day Wednesday, continued onshore flow and winds from the east bring increased cloud cover with a spotty light rain shower moving onshore possible. Therefore the primary concerns for backup day are the Cumulus Cloud Rule and Ground Winds," forecasters report.

Launch Readiness Review Completed

Leadership from United Launch Alliance (ULA), the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) and the Space Force held the Launch Readiness Review (LRR) today for the Atlas V rocket on the NROL-101 mission and gave a "go" to continue preparations for liftoff Tuesday at 5:58 p.m. EST (2258 UTC). The mission will originate from Space Launch Complex-41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

The LRR, led by ULA Launch Director Tom Heter III, took place in the Atlas Spaceflight Operations Center (ASOC) at the Cape and virtually via teleconferencing to assess the readiness of the rocket and mission assets, the status of pre-flight processing work and previewed the weather forecast that has improved to a 90 percent chance of acceptable conditions.

At the conclusion of the meeting, senior leaders were polled and gave a unanimous ready status for launch, then signed the Launch Readiness Certificate.

The NRO is an Intelligence Community element and Department of Defense organization responsible for developing, acquiring, launching and operating America's reconnaissance satellites, as well as operating associated data processing facilities in support of national security. Using NRO data, the National Security Agency, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, and other NRO mission partners produce intelligence products for the President, Congress, national policymakers, warfighters and civil users.

ULA will offer live reports from the ASOC in our automatically-refreshing blog during the Atlas V's rollout to the launch pad on Monday, plus provide comprehensive countdown coverage beginning Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. EST (1600 UTC), with continuing commentary all the way to liftoff.

The latest forecast from the 45th Weather Squadron indicates a 90 percent chance of favorable conditions for liftoff, according to Launch Weather Officer Jessica Williams. An exceedance of the ground wind limit is the only concern.

"For launch day Tuesday, strong high pressure over the northern Gulf states weakens and moves east into the Carolinas. In response, winds will be from the northeast and decrease to 15-20 knots. The onshore winds will bring scattered stable stratocumulus clouds with no threat of Range Weather Lightning Launch Commit Criteria violations," the launch weather team says.

The operations forecast includes scattered low-level clouds at 4,000 feet, good visibility, northeasterly winds 15 to 20 knots and a temperature near 71 degrees F.

If the launch is delayed to Wednesday for some reason, there is a 70 percent chance of good conditions.

"For backup day Wednesday, the pressure gradient tightens and winds increase from the east-northeast, with gusts near 26 knots likely into the evening. Continued onshore flow will bring the potential for a few Cumulus Clouds. The primary concerns for backup day are Ground Winds and the Cumulus Cloud Rule," forecasters report.

Building on the legacy of over a thousand Graphite Epoxy Motors (GEMs) that powered Delta rockets for 30 years, ULA has taken delivery of its first GEM 63 boosters from strategic partner Northrop Grumman to introduce a new era of solid motor propulsion into the Atlas V rocket system and prepare for Vulcan Centaur.

GEMs are strap-on motors that burn solid propellant and augment the lifting capacity of rocket's first stage. The original design, called GEM 40s because of their 40-inch diameter, began flying on the Delta II rocket in 1990. A second generation of 46-inch GEMs yielded the Delta II Heavy. A third generation, called GEM 60, was successfully used by Delta IV Medium+ rockets.

Now, the GEM 63s are ready to debut aboard the Atlas V rocket starting with the NROL-101 mission later this year. The three motors for that mission recently arrived at Cape Canaveral to await integration onto the rocket's first stage.

This fourth generation of GEMs is a direct evolution of the boosters used by Delta, rooted in the knowledge, manufacturing processes and materials of the earlier motors.

The GEM 63s measure 63 inches in diameter and 66 feet in length. They will be ignited at the launch pad and burn for 94 seconds, each consuming 97,500 pounds of propellant to produce 373,800 pounds of max thrust to augment the 860,200 pounds of thrust produced by the RD-180 main engine to power the Atlas V rocket skyward.

They have undergone successful qualification test-firings on the ground at the Northrop Grumman facility in Utah and the factory is in full production.

GEM 63s are a lower-cost alternative to the solid rocket boosters that have been used by Atlas V since 2003, yet deliver the same level of thrust and lift-capacity to enable replacement. They also offer a streamlined process for attaching them to the launch vehicle at the Vertical Integration Facility.

What's more, the upcoming Atlas V launches with the new motors will build flight experience in preparation for using GEM 63XLs on Vulcan Centaur's first flight.

The XL variant will stand 72 feet tall, contain 105,800 pounds of propellant and generate 455,400 pounds of thrust each. They will be the longest single-segment solid rocket motors ever built.

Atlas V can be fitted with as many as five GEM 63s, the Vulcan Centaur can incorporate up to six GEM 63XLs, depending on the weight of the payload and its orbital destination. All motors will have stationary nozzles.

They are manufactured using state-of-the-art automation and robotics. The cases are filament wound by computer-controlled winding machines using high-strength graphite fiber and durable epoxy resin.

ULA entered a long-term strategic partnership with Northrop Grumman in 2015 to become the sole provider of solid rocket boosters for Atlas V and Vulcan Centaur.

Weather Acceptable for Rollout

Final preparations are underway for this morning's rollout of the United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket from its assembly building to the pad at Cape Canaveral's Space Launch Complex-41. 

The transfer will cover a distance of one-third-of-a-mile and position the rocket on the launch pad for Tuesday's countdown and liftoff on the NROL-101 mission for the National Reconnaissance Office.

A weather briefing from Launch Weather Officer Jessica Williams of the 45th Weather Squadron has verified conditions are acceptable for the move, which is expected to begin shortly. Skies are mostly clear with just some scattered clouds, winds are brisk but within allowable limits and there's no threat of heavy rain or lightning today.

A readiness check of systems' status by ULA Launch Conductor Scott Barney has been completed satisfactorily, and ULA Launch Director Tom Heter III has authorized the rollout to begin.

Pre-roll preps are complete and the weather is acceptable to move the 206-foot-tall rocket on its Mobile Launch Platform to the launch pad.

"Stand Engineer, proceed with MLP transport to pad," Barney radioed to Issac Spence at the VIF.

We are standing by to initiate the roll.

Rollout Underway

Rollout of the Atlas V rocket to launch NROL-101 is underway with first motion of the Mobile Launch Platform (MLP) departing the Vertical Integration Facility (VIF).

The VIF is a 30-story building where the rocket stages and payload were put together for this mission aboard the Mobile Launch Platform. The MLP will travel to the pad with the help of undercarriage railcars and trackmobile machines that push the entire 1.7-million-pound platform and Atlas V 531 rocket along tracks up the hill to the pad.

Now the vehicle is at the launch pad automatic couplers will connect the Atlas 5 to ground systems, and the Atlas 5 team will complete inspections, checkouts and other activities.

Liquid oxygen will be loaded in the first stage during the countdown Tuesday afternoon, along with liquid hydrogen and liquid hydrogen for the Atlas 5's Centaur upper stage. RP-1 fuel for the first stage was loaded last month during a countdown dress rehearsal.

The latest forecast issued this morning indicates an 90% chance of favorable weather conditions for launch at 5:58 p.m. EST (2258 GMT). The primary weather concern is with ground winds at Cape Canaveral.

Forecasters predict northeast surface winds of around 15 to 20 knots at launch time, with scattered clouds at 4,000 feet. The temperature at launch time should be around 71 degrees Fahrenheit.

If the launch is pushed back to Wednesday, there is a 70% chance of acceptable weather.

The United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket stands atop its Cape Canaveral pad for Tuesday's NROL-101 launch in support of U.S. national security.

The Atlas V rollout today completed the rocket's first 1,800 feet on its journey into space, traveling by rail from the Vertical Integration Facility to the Space Launch Complex-41 pad.

The Mobile Launch Platform traveled to the pad with the help of undercarriage railcars and trackmobile machines that push the entire 1.7-million-pound MLP and Atlas V 531 rocket along tracks up the hill to the pad.

The MLP convoy was led by two boxcars, called the PVan and GVan. The payload support van houses spacecraft ground equipment such as the electrical and communication interfaces between the spacecraft systems and the launch pad throughout the countdown. The ground van supports the launch vehicle with a dedicated set of control electronics.
 
Bringing up the rear were two portable environmental control system (ECS) trailers that supply conditioned air to the rocket's compartments during rollout.

This afternoon, umbilical connections will be made with launch pad systems and the ECS feeding conditioned air to the rocket and payload will be switched to facility supplies to allow the portable trailers used during rollout to be unplugged and moved away.

The seven-hour launch countdown will begin Tuesday morning, leading to a liftoff of the Atlas V rocket at 5:58 p.m. EST (2258 UTC).

The 206-foot-tall (63-meter) Atlas 5 sits on top of a mobile launch platform pushed by locomotives along rail tracks leading to the launch pad. The transfer should take less than an hour to complete.

The launch will mark the 86th flight of an Atlas 5 rocket. The rocket will fly in its "531" configuration with a five-meter-diameter payload shroud, three solid rocket boosters, and a single-engine Centaur upper stage. This version of the Atlas 5 has flown three times before, all with AEHF communications satellites for the U.S. military.

Stacking of the Atlas 5 rocket — tail number AV-090 — inside the VIF began Sept. 11 with the hoisting of the first stage vertical on top of the Atlas mobile launch platform. ULA teams later added the three solid rocket boosters, made by Northrop Grumman, and the Centaur upper stage.

The NRO's classified payload inside the Atlas 5's Swiss-made payload fairing was raised atop the rocket Oct. 26 to cap off assembly of the rocket.

The Atlas 5 rocket has arrived at Complex 41 after an unexpected trip back to the Vertical Integration Facility last night to troubleshoot an environmental control system connection on the upper payload section of the launch vehicle.

The rocket originally departed the VIF at around 4:30 p.m. EST (2130 GMT).

Automatic couplers will connect the Atlas 5 to ground systems at pad 41, and the Atlas 5 team will complete inspections, checkouts and other activities.

Liquid oxygen will be loaded in the first stage during the countdown Wednesday afternoon, along with liquid hydrogen and liquid hydrogen for the Atlas 5's Centaur upper stage. RP-1 fuel for the first stage was loaded last month during a countdown dress rehearsal.

Forecasters predict east-northeast surface winds of around 20 to 26 knots at launch time, with broken clouds at 3,000 feet. The temperature at launch time should be around 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

Launch Scheduled for Wednesday

The United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket was rolled out to Space Launch Complex-41 this afternoon for Wednesday's NROL-101 mission for the National Reconnaissance Office.

The rocket was temporarily returned to the Vertical Integration Facility on Monday night to make adjustments to the upper environmental control system duct that supplies conditioned air to the payload fairing. Platforms in the VIF enabled technicians to reach this area at the top of the rocket, which is inaccessible at the launch pad.
 
The work was successfully completed earlier today.

Launch of the Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida is scheduled for 5:54 p.m. EST (2254 UTC).

The weather forecast calls for a 70 percent of acceptable weather. Dry conditions are expected with no rain or lightning, but a tight pressure gradient is causing breezy conditions. The outlook includes a broken deck of low clouds, good visibility, east-northeasterly winds 20-26 knots and a temperature near 75 degrees F. Ground winds are the only concern.

Countdown Begins

T-minus 6 hours, 20 minutes (L-6 hours, 50 minutes) and counting!

We have started the countdown for liftoff of the Atlas V rocket on NROL-101 this evening from Cape Canaveral.

There are two pre-planned, built-in holds, each lasting 15 minutes, scheduled in the count. One pause is reserved prior to fueling at T-minus 2 hours, the other occurs prior to the terminal count at T-minus 4 minutes. That will lead us to a liftoff at 5:54 p.m. EST (2254 UTC).

The Atlas V, designated AV-090, will launch this national security mission using the rocket's 531 configuration that is distinguished by the five-meter-wide composite payload fairing, three GEM 63 solid rocket boosters side-mounted to the first stage and a single RL10C-1 engine on the Centaur upper stage.
It stands 206 feet (63 meters) tall and will weigh one million pounds (453,600 kg) at liftoff.

This will be ULA's 141st flight since the company was formed and our 29th mission for the NRO.

The application of power to the Atlas and Centaur stages is underway at the start of today's countdown procedures. The stages are being powered up to begin launch day testing and final preparations for fueling operations.

Over the next few hours, final preps for the liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen systems will be performed, along with a test of the rocket's guidance system and the first stage propulsion and hydraulic preps, internal battery checks and testing of the GPS Metric Tracking system used to follow the rocket as it flies downrange, plus a test of the S-band telemetry relay system.

The countdown sequence, nearly seven hours long, will include two built-in holds at T-minus 2 hours and T-minus 4 minutes. A final poll during the second built-in hold at T-minus 4 minutes will give authorization to begin the terminal countdown.

Liftoff is set for 5:54 p.m. EST (2254 GMT).

The first tasks for the Atlas 5 launch team will involve powering on the rocket for pre-flight testing. Then the team will move into preparations on the Centaur upper stage's liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen propellant systems. A test of the Atlas 5's guidance system, first stage propulsion and hydraulic checks, internal battery testing, verification of the readiness of the rocket's GPS metric tracking system and a test of the launcher's S-band telemetry transmitters are also planned in the early stages of the countdown.

The launch team will be polled for approval to begin fueling the rocket during a pre-planned hold at T-minus 2 hours. Once the team gives the "go" for fueling, liquid oxygen will be pumped into the Centaur upper stage, followed by liquid oxygen into the Atlas 5 first stage. The step-by-step propellant loading procedure will conclude with super-cold liquid hydrogen fuel flowing into the Centaur.

The Atlas-Centaur rocket has been powered up for its launch.

The flight control operator in the Launch Control Center performed the power up. Soon, she will begin avionics testing while the rocket's Inertial Guidance and Control Assembly (INCA) flight computer is allowed to warm up. Later, the operator will conduct guidance system testing and steering checks of the engine nozzles prior to cryogenic fueling.

The Centaur liquid oxygen system preps have been performed to configure the ground LOX transfer system and ground pneumatic supply systems for filling the Centaur LOX tank and pressurizing the Centaur helium bottles for launch. Also, the Centaur liquid hydrogen system preps have configured the ground hydrogen transfer system for loading the Centaur hydrogen tank later in the countdown.

The initiation of gaseous nitrogen flow to the launch vehicle has started. This changes the environmental control system (ECS) to supply nitrogen gas rather than conditioned air to the internal compartments of the Atlas V and the payload fairing in preparation for fueling and launch.

Weather Remains 70% GO


In the pre-fueling weather briefing to mission management, Launch Weather Officer Jessica Williams reports that conditions remain favorable at Cape Canaveral for a rocket countdown. There are no weather constraints against proceeding into Atlas V fueling operations as scheduled.

The launch forecast remains unchanged at a 70 percent chance of favorable conditions for today's opportunity, with the only concern being ground winds.

Countdown Holding

This is Atlas Launch Control at T-minus 2 hours (L-2 hours, 30 minutes) and holding. The countdown has entered the first of two planned, built-in holds that are scheduled in today's timeline. This first block of time, lasting 15 minutes, gives the countdown some margin to resolve issues or catch up work that could be running late, and the hold provides an opportunity to ensure all is ready before fueling operations begin.

The final hold, also lasting 15 minutes, occurs at T-minus 4 minutes.

At the present time, all activities are on schedule and no problems are being addressed by the launch team.

The next phase of today's launch countdown has started on schedule as we continue to target 5:54 p.m. EST (2254 UTC) for liftoff of the United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket and the NROL-101 mission for the National Reconnaissance Office.

Preparatory steps for fueling are being kicked off, including ground chilldown of the Atlas first stage liquid oxygen system and chilldown of the transfer lines to the Centaur upper stage liquid oxygen system.

A ground valve issue with the liquid oxygen system for the Atlas V first stage has been reported by the launch team. The issue is being referred to Anomaly Chief Dave McFarland for discussion, any troubleshooting steps, then resolution.

The AC position in the control room that directs engineering teams work to resolve technical issues that arise during the count.

Pad re-entry team is heading to pad.  They will have to be cleared through road block and then hold before proceeding to pad to collect gear and protective equipment before going to the liquid oxygen farm to work on the valve.

Запуск был отменен примерно за час до старта из-за проблемы в наземной системе подачи жидкого кислорода, следует из сообщения компании ULA, которая является совместным предприятием корпораций Boeing и Lockheed Martin, осуществляющим запуски в интересах Пентагона и американского разведывательного сообщества.

Первоначально запуск ракеты планировалось осуществить еще 4 ноября по московскому времени, но из-за возникшей утечки в наземной системе кондиционирования полезной нагрузки он был перенесен на сутки. Ракету вернули со стартового стола в цех вертикальной сборки для устранения неполадки.

О целях, орбите, размере и других характеристиках секретного американского спутника NROL-101 официально не сообщается. Миссия и возможности спутников данного типа строго засекречены.

Между тем, по имеющимся данным, тяжелый спутник NROL-101, вес которого достигает трех тонн, предназначен для ведения радиоэлектронной разведки.

ИНТЕРФАКС - Из-за тропического урагана запуск тяжелой ракеты-носителя Atlas V с секретным спутником NROL-101 Национального управления военно-космической разведки США (NRO) перенесен на ближайший четверг (по московскому времени), сообщила компания-оператор United Launch Alliance (ULA).

Запуск предполагается провести 11 ноября в 17:22 по времени Восточного побережья США (12 ноября в 021:22 мск), следует из сообщения компании ULA, которая является совместным предприятием корпораций Boeing и Lockheed Martin, осуществляющим запуски в интересах Пентагона и американского разведывательного сообщества.

Ракета возвращена со стартового стола в цех вертикальной сборки для укрытия.

Запуск тяжелого американского разведывательного спутника уже неоднократно переносился.

Rollout Day for NROL-101


The United Launch Alliance Atlas V is poised to depart the Vertical Integration Facility (VIF) this afternoon for rollout to the Space Launch Complex-41 pad in readiness to perform the NROL-101 mission Friday evening.

Liftoff is scheduled for 5:13 p.m. EST (2213 UTC) in service to the National Reconnaissance Office and U.S. Space Force.

Technicians are finished with rollout preparations, switching systems from the VIF to portable elements used during the transfer that will cover one-third-of-a-mile distance. That includes generator power, communication lines and transitioning the environmental control system (ECS) to the portable trailers connected to the Mobile Launch Platform (MLP). Also, the transport system has hydraulically raised the MLP off the VIF pedestals for the roll.

A weather briefing from Launch Weather Officer Jessica Williams of the 45th Weather Squadron is wrapping up. She verified conditions are acceptable for the move, which is expected to begin shortly.

Skies remain cloudy from Tropical Storm Eta, but winds are within allowable limits and there is no threat of heavy rain or lightning this afternoon.

Rollout Begins

Rollout of the 206-foot-tall Atlas V rocket to launch NROL-101 is underway with first motion of the Mobile Launch Platform (MLP) departing the Vertical Integration Facility (VIF), where the rocket stages and payload were joined together for this mission.

A few minutes ago, the rollout preparations checklist was verified complete, a readiness poll was performed by ULA Launch Conductor Scott Barney and ULA Launch Director Tom Heter III authorized the rollout to begin.

Friday's launch is scheduled for 5:13 p.m. EST (2213 UTC), a few minutes before sunset along Florida's Space Coast. The launch weather forecast calls for a 90 percent chance of favorable conditions.

Atlas V Arrives at the Pad

The United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket rolled out today to Cape Canaveral's Space Launch Complex-41 for Friday's NROL-101 launch in support of U.S. national security.

The Atlas V was transported from the Vertical Integration Facility to the launch pad today to begin final preparations for the National Reconnaissance Office mission.

The Mobile Launch Platform traveled to the pad with the help of undercarriage railcars and trackmobile machines that push the entire 1.7-million-pound MLP and Atlas V 531 rocket along tracks up the hill to the pad. The trip began with first motion at 1:55 p.m. and concluded once the MLP was secured to the pad pedestals at 3:07 p.m. EST.

The MLP convoy was led by two boxcars, called the PVan and GVan. The payload support van houses spacecraft ground equipment such as the electrical and communication interfaces between the spacecraft systems and the launch pad throughout the countdown. The ground van supports the launch vehicle with a dedicated set of control electronics. 

Bringing up the rear were two portable environmental control system (ECS) trailers that supply conditioned air to the rocket's compartments during rollout.

The seven-hour launch countdown will begin Friday morning, leading to a liftoff of the Atlas V rocket at 5:13 p.m. EST (2213 UTC).

The weather forecast calls for a 90 percent of acceptable weather. The outlook includes a few scattered clouds, good visibility, northerly winds 10 to 15 knots and a temperature near 75 degrees F. The Cumulus Cloud Rule is the only concern.

Our nearly seven-hour countdown includes two pre-planned, built-in holds, each lasting 15 minutes. One pause is reserved prior to fueling at T-minus 2 hours, the other occurs prior to the terminal count at T-minus 4 minutes. That will lead us to the liftoff time.

The countdown is being controlling from the Atlas Spaceflight Operations Center, or ASOC, located about four miles from the launch pad, in conjunction with a team of personnel performing hands-on tasks at Space Launch Complex-41. The Cape also has assistance from design teams at ULA's Denver Operations Support Center, or DOSC.

Powered Up


The Atlas and Centaur stages have been powered up to begin launch day testing and final preparations for fueling operations for today's mission. This activity was kicked off at the start of the countdown.

The Atlas V, designated AV-090, will launch this national security mission using the rocket's 531 configuration that is distinguished by the five-meter-wide composite payload fairing, three GEM 63 solid rocket boosters side-mounted to the first stage and a single RL10C-1 engine on the Centaur upper stage.

It stands 206 feet (63 meters) tall and will weigh one million pounds (453,600 kg) at liftoff.

This will be the 17th Atlas V mission for the NRO.

This is Atlas Launch Control at T-minus 4 hours, 55 minutes (L-5 hours, 25 minutes) and counting. Launch Weather Officer Jessica Williams from the U.S. Space Force just gave the day's first briefing from the 45th Weather Squadron facility inside the Morrell Operations Center here at the Cape.

The forecast for launch time has a 90 percent chance of favorable conditions for the flight of Atlas V and NROL-101. Violation of the Range Lightning Launch Commit Criteria governing cumulus clouds is only a remote concern for this evening's launch opportunity.

The outlook for launch time calls for a few scattered low-level clouds, good visibility, northerly winds of 10 to 16 knots and a temperature near 75 degrees F.
All conditions are GO at the present time.

Guidance System Test Underway


This is Atlas Launch Control at T-minus 4 hours, 19 minutes (L-4 hours, 49 minutes) and counting down to our planned 5:13 p.m. EST (2213 UTC) liftoff time.

Activities are progressing well in today's countdown. A guidance system test of the rocket's Inertial Guidance and Control Assembly (INCA) flight computer is underway. In parallel to that, the flight control operational test has started to verify propulsion system valves cycle properly and engine steering mechanisms gimbal as commanded.

An open-loop test of the S-band system used to relay telemetry from the launch vehicle during flight is upcoming shortly.

Countdown on Schedule


We are now three hours into the countdown and working no significant issues here in the Atlas Spaceflight Operations Center (ASOC) or at the Space Launch Complex-41 pad. Liftoff remains scheduled for 5:13 p.m. EST (2213 UTC).

First stage propulsion and hydraulic preps have been performed, along with Centaur liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen system preps. Checks have verified the GPS Metric Tracking system that will use the orbiting Global Positioning System navigation satellite constellation to track the rocket's flight downrange with position, velocity and timing information.

Three Hours Until Launch


This is Atlas Launch Control at T-minus 2 hours, 30 minutes (L-3 hours) and counting. Countdown activities continue on schedule at the Space Launch Complex-41 pad and inside the Atlas Spaceflight Operations Center for today's liftoff of NROL-101.

Changeover of the environmental control system (ECS) for the Atlas V rocket has occurred. Nitrogen gas rather than conditioned air is flowing to the internal compartments of the launch vehicle and the payload fairing in preparation for fueling and flight.

Out at Space Launch Complex-41, technicians are just about complete with all of the hands-on work before departing the pad.

We are coming up on the pre-fueling weather briefing in about 10 minutes.

This first block of time, lasting 15 minutes, gives the countdown some margin to resolve issues or catch up work that could be running late, and the hold provides an opportunity to ensure all is ready before fueling operations begin.

This is Atlas Launch Control at T-minus 2 hours (L-2 hours, 15 minutes) and counting. The next phase of today's launch countdown has started on schedule as we continue to target 5:13 p.m. EST (2213 UTC) for liftoff of the United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket and the NROL-101 mission for the National Reconnaissance Office.

Preparatory steps for fueling are being kicked off, including ground chilldown of the Atlas first stage liquid oxygen system and chilldown of the transfer lines to the Centaur upper stage liquid oxygen system.

This is the first launch that Centaur is receiving its liquid oxygen from a new storage tank recently installed at Space Launch Complex-41. The upgrade is part of the pad's transformation into a unique facility that will simultaneously support Atlas V and Vulcan Centaur rockets. The 65,000-gallon storage reservoir is much larger than the previous 28,000-gallon tank, an enhancement required to support the more capable Centaur V upper stage on Vulcan.

United Launch Alliance is using the Atlas V 531 rocket, tail number AV-090, with a five-meter-diameter payload fairing and three strap-on solid rocket boosters, to launch the NROL-101 mission.

Leaving the pad on 1.8 million pounds of thrust from the combined power of the kerosene-fueled first stage main engine and three solid boosters, the Atlas V will perform pitch, yaw and roll maneuvers to align with a northeast heading. The vehicle will hit Mach 1, the speed of sound, in 39 seconds and surpass the region of maximum aerodynamic forces, or Max Q, at 51 seconds. 

The solid boosters will burn out and separate in less than two minutes. The payload fairing that protected the spacecraft during atmospheric ascent will be jettisoned at the edge of space three-and-a-half minutes into flight.

At the request of our customer, live coverage will conclude following fairing separation.

This launch — designated NROL-101 — will mark the 86th flight of an Atlas 5 rocket since 2002, and the fifth Atlas 5 mission this year. It will be ULA's 30th mission for the NRO, which owns a fleet of spy satellites supplying optical and radar imagery, signals and communications intercepted from adversaries, and other data to the U.S. government's intelligence agencies.

The NRO has not revealed information about the payload flying on the NROL-101 mission, but warning notices released to pilots and mariners suggest the Atlas 5 rocket will head on a northeasterly track from Cape Canaveral, following a path parallel to the U.S. East Coast before flying near the Canadian maritime provinces.

The trajectory indicates the Atlas 5 will release the NRO payload into a high-inclination orbit.

The NRO owns data relay satellites and several spacecraft designed to intercept communications signals in elliptical Molniya-type orbits that stretch nearly 25,000 miles (40,000 kilometers) above Earth at their highest points. Those orbits are tilted around 63 degrees to the equator, giving satellites regular views of Russia and other parts of the northern hemisphere.

The Atlas 5 scheduled for launch this evening appears to be aiming for a similar Molniya-type orbit, according to multiple independent experts who track spy satellite activity.

This launch uses the 531 version of the Atlas V rocket that will generate the necessary power to launch the NROL-101 mission.

This configuration of the Atlas V is distinguished by two stages, a five-meter-wide nose cone, three side-mounted solid-fuel boosters and a single-engine Centaur upper stage.

The United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket will come off the pad on 1.8 million pounds of thrust produced by the RD-180 main engine and three solids. Today's version stands 206 feet tall.

The 531 has flown three times before, including the launches of the AEHF-1, -2 and -3 strategic communications satellites.

The GEM 63 Debut


Today's launch begins a new era of solid motor propulsion in the Atlas V rocket system with the first use of GEM 63 rocket boosters, building on the legacy of over a thousand Graphite Epoxy Motors (GEMs) that powered Delta rockets for 30 years and a stepping-stone to GEM 63XLs powering our Vulcan Centaur.

Produced by ULA's strategic partner Northrop Grumman, GEMs are strap-on motors that burn solid propellant and augment the lifting capacity of rocket's first stage. The original design, called GEM 40s because of their 40-inch diameter, began flying on the Delta II rocket in 1990. A second generation of 46-inch GEMs yielded the Delta II Heavy. A third generation, called GEM 60, was successfully used by Delta IV Medium+ rockets.

Now, the GEM 63s are ready to debut aboard the Atlas V rocket starting with the NROL-101 mission.

This fourth generation of GEMs is a direct evolution of the boosters used by Delta, rooted in the knowledge, manufacturing processes and materials of the earlier motors.

GEM 63s a Bridge to GEM 63XL


The GEM 63s measure 63 inches in diameter and 66 feet in length. They will be ignited at the launch pad and burn for 94 seconds, each consuming 97,500 pounds of propellant to produce 371,550 pounds (1.6 mega-Newtons) of max thrust to augment the 860,200 pounds of thrust produced by the RD-180 main engine to power the Atlas V rocket skyward.

They have undergone successful qualification test-firings on the ground at the Northrop Grumman facility in Utah and the factory is in full production.
GEM 63s are a lower-cost alternative to the solid rocket boosters that have been used by Atlas V since 2003, yet deliver the same level of thrust and lift-capacity to enable replacement. They also offer a streamlined process for attaching them to the launch vehicle at the Vertical Integration Facility.

What's more, the upcoming Atlas V launches with the new motors will build flight experience in preparation for using GEM 63XLs on Vulcan Centaur's first flight.

The XL variant will stand 72 feet tall, contain 105,800 pounds of propellant and generate approximately 450,000 pounds of thrust each. They will be the longest single-segment solid rocket motors ever built.

Atlas V can be fitted with as many as five GEM 63s, the Vulcan Centaur can incorporate up to six GEM 63XLs, depending on the weight of the payload and its orbital destination. All motors will have stationary nozzles.

They are manufactured using state-of-the-art automation and robotics. The cases are filament wound by computer-controlled winding machines using high-strength graphite fiber and durable epoxy resin.

ULA entered a long-term strategic partnership with Northrop Grumman in 2015 to become the sole provider of solid rocket boosters for Atlas V and Vulcan Centaur.

GEM 63s will be added to future Atlas V missions throughout 2021 using a pre-defined schedule to complete a full transition in the near future.

The Automatic Determination and Dissemination of Just Updated Steering Terms, better known as the ADDJUST file, is being loaded into the Atlas V rocket's Inertial Navigation and Control Assembly (INCA) flight computer by the flight control operator here at the Launch Control Center. This is the planned steering parameters for the INCA to use based on today's upper level wind conditions.

A series of weather balloons has been launched throughout the countdown from the Range weather station at Cape Canaveral to collect measurements of wind speeds and directions to determine if conditions aloft violate the controllability or structural loads on the rocket during ascent. The balloon data was transmitted to ULA engineers in Denver to select a steering profile that minimizes launch vehicle responses.

The ULA Launch Director Tom Heter III has confirmed that the Atlas V rocket is ready to fly and NRO Mission Director Col. Chad Davis has given final permission to launch. That concurrence was made following a readiness poll of the launch team by Launch Conductor Scott Barney that verified all systems are "go."

T-minus 1 minute, 55 seconds. The start command has been issued to the launch sequencer. The sequencer will perform independent verifications of systems for the rest of the countdown, control the detachment of umbilicals and release the rocket from the pad at liftoff. 

The first stage RP-1 kerosene fuel and the liquid oxygen tanks have stepped up to proper pressure levels for flight and the Atlas and Centaur stages have switched from ground power to internal batteries. 
In the next few seconds, the liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen propellant topping to the Centaur upper stage will be secured and the tanks go be confirmed stable at flight pressures.

Fairing Separation

The two-halves of the RUAG Space-made composite shroud have separated following after ascent through the atmosphere. Also, the Centaur Forward Load Reactor, a two-piece deck that rings the upper stage to support the fairing during launch, has separated as planned.

To recap, the United launch Alliance rocket departed Space Launch Complex-41 at 5:32 p.m. EST on its mission for the National Reconnaissance Office. The three GEM 63 solid rocket boosters burned for approximately 90 seconds and then separated, and the payload fairing was jettisoned about three-and-a-half minutes into flight.

The seven-hour countdown started at 10:23 a.m. EST under the guidance of ULA Launch Conductor Scott Barney. The pad crew completed final preps at the complex and then cleared the area for fueling. The "go" for cryogenic tanking was given by ULA Launch Director Tom Heter III at 3:03 p.m. Tanking operations were successfully performed as 66,000 gallons of liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen were placed into the rocket.

The clear to launch was given at 5:26 p.m. EST by NRO Mission Director Col. Chad Davis, who serves as the director of the NRO's Office of Space Launch.

Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla., (Nov. 13, 2020) – A United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V rocket carrying the NROL-101 mission for the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) lifted off on Nov. 13 at 5:32 p.m. EST from Space Launch Complex-41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

"Thank you to our mission partners, the NRO and the United States Space Force for their continued confidence and partnership with ULA," said Gary Wentz, ULA vice president of Government and Commercial Programs. "This launch was the inaugural launch of our new GEM 63 solid rocket motors, an instrumental step for ULA to build flight experience in preparation for the Vulcan Centaur, our next generation launch vehicle."

The NROL-101 mission was the first ULA launch flying the new Northrop Grumman Graphite Epoxy Motors (GEM) 63 solid rocket boosters that burn solid propellant and augment the lifting capacity of rocket's first stage. The GEM 63s measure 63 in. (1.6 meters) in diameter and 66 ft. (20.11 meters) in length. Each GEM 63 produced 371,550 pounds (1.6 mega-Newtons) of max thrust to augment the 860,200 pounds (3.83 mega-Newtons) of thrust produced by the RD-180 main engine to power the Atlas V rocket skyward. At liftoff, the combined thrust was nearly 1.8 million pounds or 8 million mega-Newtons.

The mission launched on an Atlas V 531 that included a 17 ft. (5 meter) payload fairing. The Atlas booster for this mission was powered by the RD AMROSS RD-180 engine. Aerojet Rocketdyne provided the RL10C-1 engine for the Centaur upper stage.

This was the 86th launch of the Atlas V rocket and the 71st Atlas V to launch from Space Launch Complex-41 in Florida.

ULA's next launch is the NROL-44 mission for the NRO from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

To date ULA has launched 141 times with 100 percent mission success.

NROL-101 was the agency's fourth launch in 2020. The mission carried a classified national security payload designed, built and operated by the NRO in support of its overhead reconnaissance mission.

"2020 has been an especially challenging year for the launch and space community given the COVID-19 pandemic. I'm continually impressed by our partners and our NRO team members on their ability to find new and innovative ways to collaborate in this environment and ensure we are meeting our mission requirements while prioritizing the safety, security and health of our entire launch team," said Davis.

Data collected by NRO's national security systems is used to provide intelligence to senior policy makers, the Intelligence Community and Department of Defense, as well as U.S. allied partners. Additionally, information collected by NRO systems can be used to assist emergency and disaster relief efforts in the U.S. and around the world.

Раз он был до образования ULA, то не должен. У ULA первый пуск как у оператора запусков был 14.12.2006 (примечательно, что это был NROL-21, который в скором времени вышел из строя и американцы уничтожили его ракетой SM3). А вообще у них был в 2007 году частично аварийный запуск пары спутников NROL-30, аварийный из-за преждевременного отключения двигателя на Центавре (орбита ниже расчётной), но NRO признал пуск успешным

MAGNA, Utah – Nov. 13, 2020 – Three of Northrop Grumman Corporation's (NYSE: NOC) 63-inch-diameter Graphite Epoxy Motors (GEM 63) rocket boosters were used for the first time today to help successfully launch and deploy the National Reconnaissance Office launch 101 (NROL-101) on a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V launch vehicle.

Northrop Grumman's GEM 63 rocket motors propel the launch of United Launch Alliance's Atlas V on Nov. 13.

The GEM 63 strap-on boosters were developed under a cooperative agreement with ULA to provide additional lift capability for the Atlas V launch vehicle. Each motor contributes 371,500 pounds of additional maximum thrust, and up to five GEM 63 motors can support a single Atlas V launch.

"The GEM 63 rocket motors were developed to enhance the performance of the existing Atlas V launch vehicle while incorporating our flight-proven, heritage designs that provide a significantly lower cost for boost propulsion," said Charlie Precourt, vice president, propulsion systems, Northrop Grumman.

Northrop Grumman has been supplying rocket propulsion to ULA and its heritage companies for a variety of launch vehicles since 1964. The GEM family of strap-on motors started in the early 1980s with the GEM 40, which supported 132 Delta II launches with 1,003 motors. The company followed with the GEM 46, which flew 63 motors on seven successful missions on the Delta II Heavy launches, and the GEM 60, which retired in August 2019 with 86 motors flown over 26 Delta IV launches. The GEM family has recently expanded with the development of the GEM 63XL variation to support ULA's Vulcan Centaur launch vehicle.

The company also manufactured the Atlas V rocket's Reaction Control System propellant tanks at its Commerce, California, facility, and eight retro motors at its Elkton, Maryland, facility that will assist first and second stage separation.

На ожидавшейся ВЭО европейскими "радиолюбителями" объект не обнаружен.
Поиск снимков и записей работы "Центавра" и облака от слива остатков топлива навел сообщество наблюдателей на предположение о том, что в действительности КА выведен на средневысотную орбиту.

В предыдущих случаях, когда Титан-Центавром пускали Трампеты с Канаверала на ОТМ, перевод с 57 на 63 градуса происходил таким хитрым финтом что по моему он до сих пор даже не описан, не то что доступен наблюдателям.

This altitude is in the Van Allen radiation belt sweet spot between 10000 and 12000km.  A Goldilocks orbit if you will.  Higher or lower and your in the radiation kill zone for electronics.

Last night I imaged an object that is almost certainly USA 310 (the #NROL101 (https://twitter.com/hashtag/NROL101?src=hashtag_click) payload), or the NROL-101 Centaur upper stage, launched 4 days ago. It is in a ~11000 km altitude, 58.5 degree inclined MEO orbit and steady in brightness.

Надо копать зачем такая орбита была выбрана для ICO. И поему первый прототип Навстара (Таймейшн-3) был на такой же орбите.

Вобще орбита характерная. Ранее (до освоения ГСО) широко рассматривалась для спутников связи. Впервые пытались опробовать с помощью ATS-2. Потом эту орбиту выбрала ICO.

 Правда у него как оказалось 13000. Наклонение эквивалентно 55 градусам.
При 11000 должно быть гдето 4 витка в сутки.

Но ICO — Intermediate Circular Orbit.

Наверное, речь идет о сабже и о его орбите. Но ICO – круговая. Даже давно орбиту выдерживали круговой с точностью до 8 км, имхо. А здесь шаляй-валяй на 38 км. Или это не случайно? Когда выгодно дергать высоту? Может быть более-менее пологий участок снижения и взлета упрощает определение местоположения радиоисточника?

Я имею в виду спутникоавую систему ICO принадлежащую компании ICO Global Communications Ltd единственный спутник которой (на испециально разработанной платформе HS-601MEO) был неудачно запущен 12.3.2000 с Морского старта. 
 Целью системы было заявлено предоставление глобальной индивидуальной телефонной связи.

F2 SAMOS? Видовая разведка, другие орбиты. Подскажите или дайте ссылку на F2. Поиском F2 выдает много спутников NRO. Спасибо!
"ICO F2" означает всего лишь "Второй запуск спутника ICO". Запущен 19.06.01. Это единственный аппарат выведенный на аналогичную орбиту.

NRO? Очень сомнительно. Была бы связь был бы запуск USSF.

They were less than a degree apart in the sky at 1:28 UT this night, when I imaged them. Real distance between objects was ~541 km.
Since launch, the Centaur has made a complete lap on the payload.

Also note the difference in brightness between the two objects. They were at a range of 11312 resp. 10794 km during imaging.
