The U.S. Space Force Space and Missile Systems Center successfully delivered the fourth Global Positioning System (GPS) III satellite to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, July 14.

CAPE CANAVERAL AIR FORCE STATION, Fla. -- The U.S. Space Force Space and Missile Systems Center successfully delivered the fourth Global Positioning System (GPS) III satellite to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, July 14.

GPS III Space Vehicle (SV) 04 was safely transported from the Lockheed Martin facility in Waterton, Colorado to Space Coast Regional Airport in Titusville, Florida. The satellite was carried aboard a C-17 Globemaster III originating from Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.

The delivery of GPS III SV04 starts the clock for final testing and checkout prior to launch. The satellite will be processed at the Astrotech Space Operations facility in Florida to ensure the full functionality of the satellite, prepare the satellite for propellant loading, and encapsulate the satellite in its protective fairing. At the completion of these activities, the satellite will be horizontally integrated with the SpaceX Falcon 9 launch vehicle.

"The shipment of the fourth GPS III satellite was successfully conducted just two weeks after the launch of our GPS III-SV03 satellite. This operation is a remarkable achievement and testament to the hard work of the entire GPS team members from all across the country," said Col. Edward Byrne, SMC's Medium Earth Orbit Space Systems Division chief. "The delivery of SV04 marks the start of our third GPS III launch campaign on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and brings us another step closer in advancing the GPS constellation with more capable satellites."

GPS III SV04 is slated to launch in September 2020. Once on-orbit, it will join the operational constellation of 31 GPS satellites, delivering enhanced resiliency, better accuracy, and advanced anti-jam capabilities. GPS delivers the gold standard in positioning, navigation, and timing services supporting vital U.S. and allied operations worldwide, and underpins critical financial institutions, transportation services, and agricultural industries.

SpaceX is tentatively planning the Starlink launch for Sep 27th and a GPS launch for Sep 29th.

Both missions are droneship recoveries that will require OCISLY and JRTI to be underway at the same time.

Tug Finn Falgout should leave with JRTI again later today for Starlink. (1/2)

SpaceX is swapping the droneship for the Starlink mission.

Tug Finn Falgout returned last night with JRTI - following a postponement because of poor weather - but is now preparing to depart Port Canaveral with OCISLY droneship for the revised launch date - NET Sep 27.

[i]CAPE CANAVERAL AIR FORCE STATION, Fla. --[/i] The U.S. Space Force's newest Global Positioning System (GPS) III satellite, Space Vehicle 04 (GPS III SV04) rolled out to Cape Canaveral's Space Launch Complex 40, Sept. 27.

The Lockheed Martin-built GPS III SV04 is scheduled to launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket – the third National Security Space Launch (NSSL) mission on a Falcon 9 rocket, the second U.S. Space Force (USSF) first-stage booster recovery, and the sixth USSF launch on Sept. 30. The 15-minute launch window opens at 9:51 p.m. EDT. A live feed will begin 20 minutes before the launch and conclude approximately 45 minutes afterward. A simulcast of the broadcast can be viewed at www.spacex.com.

"The GPS III program office in partnership with our contract teammates continue to push the envelope on the capabilities they deliver to users, both civil and military around the globe. Our latest GPS III satellites' nearly 70 percent digital payload provides the U. S. Space Force with greater operational flexibility and cutting edge capabilities while continuing to support legacy users," said Cordell DeLaPena, Air Force program executive officer for SMC's Space Production Corps.

GPS III SV04 will be launched to augment the current GPS constellation comprised of 31 operational spacecraft. GPS satellites operate in Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) at an altitude of approximately 20,200 km (12,550 miles) in six orbital planes. Each satellite circles the earth twice per day. GPS is the premier space-based provider of positioning, navigation, and timing services for more than four billion users worldwide. This latest generation of GPS satellite boasts a 15-year design life -- 25 percent longer than the previous generation of GPS satellites on orbit.

GPS III brings new capabilities to users such as the new L1C civilian signal, which opens the window for future interoperability with international satellite navigation systems.

"Our GPS III team is excited to be here once again. Less than 3 months ago, we successfully launched GPS III SV03. Since then, the team has successfully delivered the satellite to its final orbit, performed on-orbit testing and delivered the satellite to operations, while executing a mature satellite production line. I can't be more proud of everyone involved in this mission," said Col. Edward Byrne, Medium Earth Orbit Space Systems Division chief. "The launch of GPS III SV04 will continue to modernize our GPS constellation by increasing our capabilities with advanced features for both our civil and military users across the world."

The official launch weather forecast issued this morning by the 45th Weather Squadron at Cape Canaveral calls for a 70% chance of favorable conditions for launch of a Falcon 9 rocket tonight.

The 15-minute launch window opens at 9:43 p.m. EDT (0143 GMT).

The primary weather concern tonight is with a frontal boundary that could bring clouds over the spaceport. The weather rule forecasters expect to monitor most closely is the thick cloud rule.

The weather team expects mostly cloudy skies at launch time tonight, with scattered clouds at 12,000 feet and broken clouds at 24,000 feet. Winds are predicted to be from the north at 12 to 17 mph, and the temperature at launch time should be around 76 degrees Fahrenheit.

More widespread rain showers and thunderstorms are forecast for Saturday evening. If the Falcon 9 launch gets delayed to Saturday night, the forecast calls for just a 20 percent chance of favorable conditions for liftoff.

SpaceX's launch conductor will verify all members of the launch team are ready to proceed with the final 35-minute automated countdown sequence at 9:05 p.m. EDT (0105 GMT), followed by the start of filling the rocket with super-chilled, densified RP-1 kerosene and liquid oxygen propellants at 9:08 p.m. EDT (0108 GMT).

Liquid oxygen loading into the second stage will begin at T-minus 16 minutes, at 9:27 p.m. EDT (0127 GMT), followed by final chilldown of the rocket's nine Merlin first stage engines, a final pre-flight engine steering check, switching of the rocket to internal power, and pressurization of the Falcon 9's propellant tanks leading up to liftoff.

ИНТЕРФАКС - Запуск тяжелой ракеты-носителя Falcon 9 с новейшим спутником системы глобального позиционирования третьего поколения GPS III в интересах ВВС США, планировавшийся в субботу утром по московскому времени, отменен за две секунды до старта, сообщила компания-разработчик носителя SpaceX.

Запуск был отменен по техническим причинам. Его планировалось осуществить 2 октября в 21:43 по американскому времени (3 октября в 04:43 мск) с 40-го стартового комплекса на космодроме на мысе Канаверал (штат Флорида).

В случае устранения технических проблем следующая попытка запуска может быть предпринята через сутки.

Космический аппарат GPS III весом 3,8 тонны должен стать очередным элементом в планируемой орбитальной группировке из 32 спутников глобального позиционирования третьего поколения. Эти аппараты постепенно должны будут заменить собой устаревшие спутники, которые в настоящее время обеспечивают сигнал GPS по всему миру. Стоимость одного аппарата оценивается в $577 млн.

After an aborted launch at T-minus 2 seconds Friday night, SpaceX has lowered the Falcon 9 rocket for the U.S. Space Force's GPS 3 SV04 mission horizontal at Cape Canaveral's Complex 40 launch pad for return to a nearby hangar.

SpaceX engineers in the hangar are expected to inspect the rocket and fix the problem that triggered a hold in the countdown Friday night just as the Falcon 9 rocket began its engine ignition sequence.

Elon Musk, SpaceX's founder and CEO, tweeted that an "unexpected pressure rise in the turbomachinery gas generator" caused the abort, referring to a component in the Falcon 9's Merlin main engines.

SpaceX hasn't set a new target launch date for the mission, which was set to carry a GPS navigation satellite into orbit for the Space Force. The company proceeded with the launch of a different Falcon 9 rocket Tuesday from nearby pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, successfully deploying 60 more Starlink internet satellites.

SpaceX also appears to have recalled its "Just Read The Instructions" drone ship back to Florida's Space Coast from its position in the Atlantic Ocean northeast of Cape Canaveral. The vessel was on station for landing of the Falcon 9 booster after launching the GPS satellite.

The lowering of the Falcon 9 rocket on its launch pad and return of the drone ship to Port Canaveral suggest, at a minimum, the GPS launch won't happen within the next week.

... Managers of the Crew-1 mission held a media briefing on Oct. 28, to discuss the upcoming launch, including results from recent testing of the Falcon 9 Merlin engines following unexpected data SpaceX noted during a recent non-NASA launch.

"We've been working hand-in-hand with SpaceX to work through this engine anomaly," said Steve Stich, Commercial Crew Program manager. "We have a little bit more work to do, but we see a pretty good path to get to flight."

The unexpected data resulted in an auto-abort during engine ignition caused by early start behavior on two engines. The SpaceX team inspected the engines on the launch pad, but did not find any signs of misconfigurations, so the two engines were removed and sent to the company's facility in McGregor, Texas, for additional testing.

Once in Texas, the team replicated the same early start behavior on the test stand. After additional inspections, the team found blockage in a passage leading to a relief valve on the gas generator caused by a masking lacquer residue that had hardened during the engine build process. Once the blockage was removed, the gas generator performance was restored to normal behavior during subsequent testing.

The team then analyzed data signatures across the Merlin fleet and found similar early start data results on two engines for the Crew-1 booster, which are being replaced.

"It was a really great find; it allowed us to fix something that is very subtle but can have some negative impact on the engine operation," said Hans Koenigsmann, SpaceX vice president of build and flight reliability. "We continue to make progress on the Dragon spacecraft. The team is processing ahead of the Nov. 14 launch attempt and everything is going well there."

Liftoff is scheduled for 7:49 p.m. EST on Nov. 14 from Launch Complex 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

"Sitting in this seat, I'm able to look at the phenomenal progress the team has been making as we're moving toward our first full increment launch and crew capability for the International Space Station," said Kathy Lueders, associate administrator for NASA's Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate. "It's a really exciting timeframe for the agency, really exciting timeframe for our partners."

       В частности, 3 ноября компания United Launch Alliance (ULA) готовится осуществить запуск ракеты-носителя Atlas V с секретным спутником NROL-101. По имеющимся данным, он является спутником радиолокационной разведки Topaz Block II.
       Затем компания ULA должна будет запустить ракету Delta IV со спутником NROL-44. По словам бывшего сотрудника NASA Дэвида Бейкера, знакомого с программой NRO, речь идет о запуске американского космического аппарата Orion, также известного как Mentor или Advanced Orion - серии американских спутников, предназначенных для радиоэлектронной разведки.
       ULA является совместным предприятием корпораций Boeing и Lockheed Martin, осуществляющим запуски в интересах Пентагона и американского разведывательного сообщества.
       Стоимость каждого из этих двух многотонных аппаратов оценивается в миллиард долларов.

Из порта Канаверал в район посадки 1-й ступени, в 635 км от места старта, вышла плавучая платформа OCISLY с кораблём обеспечения GO Quest (на нём размещается команда для обслуживания платформы).
Запуск ожидается не ранее 5 ноября в 1:28 МСК (22:28 UTC 4 ноября). После огневого испытания компания должна утвердить официальную дату и время старта миссии.

It's launch day again at Cape Canaveral, where a Falcon 9 rocket is poised for liftoff during a 15-minute window opening at 6:24 p.m. EST (2324 GMT) tonight with the U.S. Space Force's next GPS navigation satellite.

The mission was delayed from last month after an engine problem prompted an automated abort at T-minus seconds during a countdown Oct. 2.

Engineers investigating the Oct. 2 abort found that two of the nine first stage engines on the rocket had a tendency to ignite a split-second earlier than expected. Inspections showed a blocked relief valve in the gas generators of the two engines caused pressures to rise sooner than designed at startup, and sensors on the engines detected the problem and halted the countdown.

SpaceX engineers identified a masking treatment (https://spaceflightnow.com/2020/10/28/spacex-traces-engine-problem-to-blocked-valve-ahead-of-november-crew-launch/) inadvertently left behind in two Merlin engines as the cause of the aborted countdown last month.

A Space Force official said SpaceX replaced two of the engines on the Falcon 9 rocket for the GPS 3 SV04 mission. The two replacement Merlin 1D engines were found not to have the masking lacquer blocking relief valves in the powerplants' gas generators.

The engine issues spilled over to affect several other SpaceX launches, including the launch of the next Crew Dragon mission to the International Space Station with four astronauts on-board.

The Crew Dragon flight is now set for Nov. 14, and NASA officials plan to review data from the GPS launch tonight before formally clearing the Falcon 9 rocket for launch on the Crew Dragon mission.

The official launch weather forecast from the U.S. Space Force's 45th Weather Squadron calls for a 60% chance of favorable conditions for liftoff this evening. The main weather concerns are with cumulus clouds and ground winds at Cape Canaveral.

SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket is set for liftoff from Cape Canaveral on Nov. 5 carrying the U.S. Air Force's next GPS 3-series navigation satellite destined for an orbit more than 12,000 miles above Earth.

The 229-foot-tall (70-meter) rocket is poised for launch from pad 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida at 6:24 p.m. EST Thursday, Nov. 5, at the opening of a 15-minute launch window.

The Lockheed Martin-built GPS 3 SV04 satellite mounted atop the rocket is the fourth member of an upgraded generation of GPS navigation spacecraft, featuring higher-power signals that are more resilient to jamming, and additional broadcast frequencies to make the GPS network more interoperable with other navigation satellite fleets.

The timeline below outlines the launch sequence for the Falcon 9 flight with the GPS 3 SV04 spacecraft.

Вашингтон. 6 ноября. ИНТЕРФАКС - Тяжелая ракета-носитель Falcon 9 в пятницу по московскому временим должна вывести на орбиту очередной новейший спутник системы глобального позиционирования третьего поколения GPS III в интересах ВВС США, сообщила компания-разработчик носителя SpaceX.

Запуск планируется осуществить в 15-минутное временное окно, которое открывается 5 ноября в 18:54 по времени Восточного побережья США (6 ноября в 02:54 мск) с 40-го стартового комплекса на космодроме на мысе Канаверал (штат Флорида). Первоначально он должен был состояться еще 2 октября, но был отменен всего за две секунды до старта из-за обнаруженных технических проблем.

Спутник через полтора часа после запуска будет заброшен на высоту около 1 тыс. км над Землей, а затем размещен на средней околоземной орбите - примерно на высоте 20 тыс. км над планетой.

При этом первая многоразовая ступень ракеты-носителя Falcon 9 должна будет через 8,5 минут после запуска совершить вертикальную посадку на автоматической плавучей платформе Of Course I Still Love You, которая дислоцирована в Атлантике в 635 км от космодрома на мысе Канаверал. Кроме того, специальное спасательное судно Ms. Chief попытается "поймать" в надводные сети или выловить из воды две створки обтекателя головной части ракеты, которые после отделения будут спускаться на парашютах. Повторное использование обтекателя позволяет экономить компании SpaceX до $6 млн при запусках своих ракет.

Это уже четвертый спутник GPS III, выводимый на орбиту с 2018 года. Космический аппарат весом 3,8 тонны должен стать очередным элементом в планируемой орбитальной группировке из 32 спутников глобального позиционирования третьего поколения. Эти аппараты постепенно должны заменить собой устаревшие спутники, которые в настоящее время обеспечивают сигнал GPS по всему миру.

Спутники GPS III имеют большую мощность сигнала, позволяют определять местоположение гражданских объектов в три раза точнее, чем используемые в настоящее время аппараты, у которых она составляет от 3 до 10 метров. Точность определения местоположения военных объектов будет еще выше.

При этом GPS III располагает значительно улучшенными возможностями по борьбе с помехами в сравнении с более ранними аппаратами. Они будут в восемь раз более защищенными от подавления противниками США.

В настоящее время услугами системы GPS, оператором которой являются ВВС США, пользуются более 4 млрд человек.

Производством новых спутников занимается корпорация Lockheed Martin. Стоимость одного спутника составляет $577 млн. Срок эксплуатации спутника нового поколения составляет 15 лет.

Первые 10 аппаратов GPS III в версии Space Vehicle (Block IIIA) запустят до 2023 года включительно, остальные 22 в версии Follow On (Block IIIF) начнут размещать на орбите с 2025 по 2034 годы. One of SpaceX's two fairing recovery ships -- named "Ms. Chief" -- is also in position in the Atlantic Ocean to recover two halves of the Falcon 9's payload shroud around 45 minutes after launch.

The vessels are equipped with giant nets to catch the fairing shells as they descend under parafoils. SpaceX has reused the fairing after retrieving the hardware from the sea, but catching them in the nets prevents the shells from being drenched in salt water. That eases their refurbishment and reuse, SpaceX says.

LOS ANGELES AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. – The U.S. Space Force, Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC) and its mission partners successfully launched the fourth Global Positioning Systems (GPS) III satellite at 6:24 p.m. EST, Nov. 5 from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida. The Lockheed Martin-built satellite was carried to orbit aboard a Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX) Falcon 9 launch vehicle.

GPS III SV04 separated from its upper stage approximately 90 minutes after launch. Engineers and operators at Lockheed Martin's Waterton Facility will now begin on-orbit checkout and tests, which are estimated to complete in approximately one month. Operational use is expected to begin in a few months.

"The GPS III program continues to make strides in modernizing the GPS constellation for the U. S. Space Force while maintaining the gold standard for position, navigation and timing," said Col. Edward Byrne, Medium Earth Orbit Space Systems Division chief.

GPS III SV04 will join the current GPS constellation comprised of 31-operational spacecraft. GPS III, the newest generation of GPS satellites, brings new capabilities to users, including three times greater accuracy and up to eight times improved anti-jamming capabilities.

The U.S. Space Force's Space and Missile Systems Center, located at Los Angeles Air Force Base in El Segundo, California, is the center of excellence for acquiring and developing military space systems. SMC's portfolio includes space launch, global positioning systems, military satellite communications, a defense meteorological satellite control network, range systems, space-based infrared systems and space situational awareness capabilities.

On Thursday, November 5 at 6:24 p.m. EST, Falcon 9 completed its second mission this year for the United States Space Force when it launched the GPS III Space Vehicle 04 from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Following stage separation, SpaceX landed Falcon 9's first stage on the "Of Course I Still Love You" droneship, which was stationed in the Atlantic Ocean. The spacecraft deployed approximately 1 hour and 29 minutes after liftoff.

Hard to tell exactly where OCISLY is based off of the most recent pin but they are between bouy 41013 to the north and 41004 to the south.
