Rocket Lab to Demonstrate Fastest Launch Turnaround to Date

Rocket Lab to demonstrate rapid launch capability by launching next mission just three weeks after previous launch

Long Beach, California. 15 June 2020 – Satellite manufacturer and global leader in dedicated small satellite launch, Rocket Lab, has today announced its next Electron mission is scheduled to launch just three weeks after its most recent mission in a demonstration of the company's rapid launch capability.

The mission, 'Pics Or It Didn't Happen,' is scheduled to launch from Rocket Lab Launch Complex 1 Pad A on New Zealand's Māhia Peninsula no earlier than 3 July, 2020 UTC— just days after the successful launch of Rocket Lab's most recent mission, 'Don't Stop Me Now,' on 13 June, 2020 UTC. The back-to-back missions will represent Rocket Lab's fastest turnaround between missions to date.

'Pics Or It Didn't Happen' will deploy seven small satellites to a 500km circular low Earth orbit for a range of customers, including Spaceflight Inc.'s customer Canon Electronics (https://en.canon-elec.co.jp/), as well as Planet and In-Space Missions (https://in-space.co.uk/).

The primary payload aboard this mission, Canon Electronics Inc.'s CE-SAT-IB, was procured by satellite rideshare and mission management provider Spaceflight Inc. The mission objective for the CE-SAT-IB satellite is to demonstrate Canon Electronics Inc.'s Earth-imaging technology with high-resolution and wide-angle cameras, as well as test the microsatellite for mass production.

The next five spacecrafts manifested for this mission are the latest generation of SuperDove satellites manufactured by Planet, operator of the world's largest constellation of Earth-observation satellites. Planet's satellites are capable of imaging the Earth's entire landmass on a near-daily basis. This unprecedented dataset helps researchers, students, businesses and governments discover patterns, detect early signals of change, and make timely, informed decisions. These five SuperDoves, Flock 4v, are equipped with new sensors to enable higher image quality with sharper, more vibrant colors and accurate surface reflectance values for advanced algorithms and time-series analysis.

The final spacecraft aboard Electron for this mission has been supplied by British small mission prime, In-Space Missions. The Faraday-1 6U CubeSat is a hosted payload mission providing a low-cost route to orbit for start-ups, institutions, and large corporate R&D groups.  In addition, it provides a first flight demonstration of In-Space's own software-defined payload that will enable uploadable payload capabilities on future missions.  Faraday-1 is the first flight of the Faraday service with four future satellites already under contract.

Peter Beck, Rocket Lab founder and CEO, says launching missions just days apart demonstrates Rocket Lab's unique capability to provide dedicated and responsive space access to small satellite customers.

"Rocket Lab has eliminated the small sat waiting room for orbit. We've focused heavily on shoring up our rapid launch capability in recent years and we're proud to be putting that into practice for the smallsat community with launches just days apart," said Mr. Beck. "We're excited to continue  expanding our responsive space capability with our third launch pad coming online before the end of the year, as well as the continued growth of our Photon satellite program that enables our small sat operators to do more, spend less, and get to orbit faster."

With a new Electron launch vehicle built every 18 days, Rocket Lab remains on target to deliver monthly launches for the remainder of 2020 and into 2021, including the company's first launch from Launch Complex 2 for the U.S. Space Force in Q3 and a mission to the Moon for NASA aboard Electron and Rocket Lab's spacecraft bus platform Photon in 2021.

Pics Or It Didn't Happen: The Rocket Lab Launch Of Five New SuperDoves

Mike Safyan (https://www.planet.com/pulse/author/misha/) | June 15, 2020

This June and July will be busy times for the Launch and Satellite Operations teams at Planet. In addition to the successful launch of three new SkySats (https://www.planet.com/pulse/skysats-16-18-falcon-9-success/) this past Saturday (with three more launching this summer), we have another five SuperDoves (Flock 4e) launching on Rocket Lab's "Pics or It Didn't Happen" Electron launch later this month. It'll be good to see our Doves back on New Zealand soil (at least temporarily), and we plan to have the pics to prove it.

Here is a SkySat image of the Rocket Lab Launch Complex 1 spaceport, which can be found on New Zealand's North Island at the southern tip of the Māhia Peninsula. The image was collected on June 6, 2020. © 2020, Planet Labs Inc. All Rights Reserved.

The first time we launched with Rocket Lab was with our Dove Pioneer satellite in January of 2018 on their "Still Testing" flight, which was their first launch to orbit. Rocket Lab has had an amazing track record of success since then, with 10 successful flights in a row and a lot of experience delivering customers to space.

The Flock 4e SuperDoves (fun fact: the "e" in "Flock 4e" stands for electron!) will lift off from Rocket Lab's Launch Complex 1 Pad A in New Zealand and will be deployed into an altitude of approximately 500 km, morning-crossing Sun Synchronous Orbit (SSO) to join the rest of the in-orbit SuperDove fleet.

UK SME In-Space launches first in a series of Innovative Smallsat Missions
1st July 2020

Faraday-1 will provide a turnkey service for commercial customers and research organisations

Access to space at a competitive and affordable cost

  • In-Space Missions, a UK SME based in Bordon, Hampshire, is preparing for launch of its pioneering mission Faraday-1, the first in a series of satellites that will provide a turnkey service for commercial customers and research organisations wanting to access to space at a competitive and affordable cost
  • Faraday-1 will be launched from New Zealand on Friday 3rd July 2020, on one of Rocket Lab's Electron Rocket, with the satellite hosting seven payloads from different organisations.

In-Space Missions is a pioneering UK SME, working in the new space arena, providing affordable access to space which historically has been a hurdle for many organisations. The Faraday-1 maiden satellite is set to launch on Friday 3rd July on an Electron Rocket from New Zealand at 21.13.42 UTC, hosting seven payloads from different organisations globally, including Airbus Defence and Space, Kleos Space, Lacuna Space, the Space Environment Research Centre in Canberra, Canadensys Aerospace, Aeternum, and a major industry player.

The payloads will demonstrate a range of applications including the Internet of Things (IoT), on-orbit characterisation of an adaptive optics corrected ground-based laser, 360-degree optical video imaging, and RF spectrum monitoring. In addition, Faraday-1 will prototype the vision system and content processing for SpaceTime Enterprises, an In-Space joint venture providing real-time video from space. It will also de-risk key elements of CubeScale, a plug-and-play low cost scaling product that makes use of CubeSat technology. And finally, DSTL will be using the Faraday-1 mission platform to test satellite operations communications for future knowledge-sharing between nations.

In-Space Missions CEO, Doug Liddle, said: "We have been working on this pioneering mission for nearly two years, from concept to this point, and can't wait for launch. It has been exciting working with such a broad spectrum of commercial customers and we were very encouraged by the diversity of the payloads on our first launch.

"It's been an interesting few years, but once everything was shipped to New Zealand and out of our hands, our fingers have been crossed as the days count down. Faraday-1 is the first of many future Faraday satellites, and these will progress using a range of platforms to further improve the economies of scale, while reducing the cost and time for payloads to reach orbit."

Airbus Defence and Space UK Managing Director, Richard Franklin, explained: "Our payload hosted on the Faraday-1 satellites is part of our Prometheus programme, testing the next generation retaskable software-defined radio payload. Working with In-Space Missions, we're able to take advantage of their specialist capabilities and agility to develop new technologies and services for customers. Once Prometheus 1 is proven in orbit, we will use it to de-risk future services and in-life support solutions, working hand-in-hand with our SME partners."

Graham Peters, Chair of the UKspace, added: "The UK space sector is full of dynamic and burgeoning SMEs with great ideas. In-Space Missions is disrupting the norm in providing access to space which has, to date, been costly and mainly prohibitive, especially for smaller organisations. Their tenacity and creativity to demonstrate affordable access will open the door for many space and non-space organisations with an idea to launch their own satellites."

Doug added: "Prior to completing the satellite, we ran a schools competition to design the mission logo. Our maiden satellite is carrying a plaque inscribed with this mission logo, the names of In-Space team, their families and the schools competition winners. In addition, we've included the secret gin recipe from our favourite local distillery, Silent Pool Gin. Not many gin providers can say they've been launched into space."

In-Space Missions has also signed a Public Private Partnership (PPP) programme with the European Space Agency (ESA) worth €10M to develop the Faraday Second Generation capabilities to become a Service Mission Provider (SMP) and fly two microsatellite validation missions in low Earth orbit. The PPP programme is co-funded under the ESA ARTES Pioneer programme, and is part of the Partners Projects.

Watch the livestream of Faraday-1 launching
2nd July 2020

The 13th Rocket Lab Electron launch will take place from Launch Complex 1 on the Mahia peninsula (New Zealand North Island).

Its payload includes Faraday-1, 5 x Super Doves from Planet, and CE-SAT-1B from Canon.

The launch window runs from 3 Jul 2020 to 16 Jul 2020, T0 range is 21:13:58.00 to 22:03:30.00 – these times are given in UTC, all remaining times are given in BST.

As a result of weather conditions, ignition has been delayed slightly, and will now take place on Saturday 4 July at 22:13:58 BST.

There are several ways to access the livestream from Rocket Labs, details of which are below.

(https://www.faradaymission.space/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Rocket-Lab-icon-gold-300x300.png) Livestream

At around T-15  minutes we go live with the mission broadcast, available on RocketLab's website (https://www.rocketlabusa.com/live-stream)Twitter account (https://twitter.com/RocketLab), and YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/rocketlabnz). Depending on onboard camera availability and the available data downlinks, it's not always possible to incorporate live video of payload deployment into the webcast. If this is the case, the webcast will end following Kick Stage separation.

Mission Timeline

EventTime w.r.t. T0
Ignition and Clamp Release+0 s
Kickstage Cut-Off+3125.3 s
Faraday-1 deployment (the main event!)+3320.3 s (if nominal launch time then this will occur at 23:09:18.3 BST)

(https://www.faradaymission.space/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Farday-1-launch-route-2-460x400.png) (https://www.faradaymission.space/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Farday-1-launch-route-2.png) (https://www.faradaymission.space/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Farday-1-launch-route1-460x400.png) (https://www.faradaymission.space/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Farday-1-launch-route1.png)

Faraday-1 deployment will take place west of Ireland, as indicated in the figure above right.
Within 15 minutes of deployment from the Electron upper stage, Faraday-1 will perform a number of automatic operations, including:

  • Turn on of UHF receiver
  • Deploy UHF antenna
  • Deploy solar panels
  • Initiate satellite detumble (NB expected residual rates from deployment should be < 0.5 deg/sec)

Confirmation of Operations

We won't be able to confirm successful performance of these operations until the first ground contact which takes place around 9 hours later.

During this and subsequent ground contacts, we should be able to confirm success of the automatic operations and place the satellite into a safe Sun-pointing mode. At this point, the Launch and Early Operations Phase (LEOP) is considered to be complete and commissioning commences.

In-Space personnel will be broadcasting key updates through our @Heads_InSpace (https://twitter.com/Heads_InSpace) Twitter channel, including details of satellite acquired, satellite now Sun pointing etc.

Rocket Lab Mission Fails to Reach Orbit

Long Beach, Calif. July 4, 2020: Following a successful lift-off, first stage burn, and stage separation, Rocket Lab experienced an anomaly during its 13th Electron mission 'Pics Or It Didn't Happen.'

The issue occurred approximately four minutes into the flight on July 4, 2020 and resulted in the safe loss of the vehicle. As a result, the payloads onboard Electron were not deployed to orbit. Electron remained within the predicted launch corridors and caused no harm to personnel or the launch site. Rocket Lab is working closely with the FAA to investigate the anomaly and identify its root cause to correct the issue to move forward.

"We are deeply sorry to our customers Spaceflight Inc., Canon Electronics Inc., Planet, and In-Space Missions for the loss of their payloads. We know many people poured their hearts and souls into those spacecraft. Today's anomaly is a reminder that space launch can be unforgiving, but we will identify the issue, rectify it, and be safely back on the pad as soon as possible," said Peter Beck, Rocket Lab founder and CEO. "The launch team operated with professionalism and expertise to implement systems and procedures that ensured the anomaly was managed safely. I'm proud of the way they have responded to a tough day. We're working together as a team to comb through the data, learn from today, and prepare for our next mission."

Today's anomaly occurred after 11 consecutive successful orbital launches of the Electron launch vehicle. Rocket Lab currently has more than eight Electron vehicles in production, ready for a rapid return to flight as soon as investigations are complete and any required corrective actions are in place.

Rocket Lab.

Pics Or It Didn't Happen,

In-Space Missions.

Rocket Lab to Resume Electron Launches in August

Four weeks after experiencing an in-flight anomaly, Rocket Lab has identified the issue and received approval from the Federal Aviation Administration to return to flight

Long Beach, California. July 31, 2020 – Rocket Lab today announced that it has received approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to resume launches this month after identifying an anomalous electrical connection as the cause of an in-flight failure on July 4, 2020. With corrective measures underway, the next Electron launch has been scheduled for August from Launch Complex 1

Over the past month, Rocket Lab has collaborated on an investigation with the support of the FAA, the primary federal licensing body for commercial space launch activity. Rocket Lab's Accident Investigation Board (AIB) worked through an extensive fault tree analysis to examine all potential causes for the anomaly that took place late into Rocket Lab's 13th launch.

On July 4, 2020, the Electron launch vehicle successfully lifted-off from Launch Complex 1 and proceeded through a nominal first stage engine burn, Stage 1-2 separation, Stage 2 ignition, and fairing jettison as planned. Several minutes into the second stage burn, the engine performed a safe shutdown resulting in a failure to reach orbit. Due to the controlled way the engine shut down, Rocket Lab continued to receive telemetry from the vehicle, providing engineers with extensive data to conduct a robust investigation into the issue. After reviewing more than 25,000 channels of data and carrying out extensive testing, Rocket Lab's AIB was able to confidently narrow the issue down to a single anomalous electrical connection. This connection was intermittently secure through flight, creating increasing resistance that caused heating and thermal expansion in the electrical component. This caused the surrounding potting compounds to liquefy, leading to the disconnection of the electrical system and subsequent engine shutdown. The issue evaded pre-flight detection as the electrical connection remained secure during standard environmental acceptance testing including vibration, thermal vacuum, and thermal cycle tests.

Peter Beck, Rocket Lab's founder and CEO, said the issue had never been observed before across the company's previous 12 Electron launches. "The issue occurred under incredibly specific and unique circumstances, causing the connection to fail in a way that we wouldn't detect with standard testing. Our team has now reliably replicated the issue in test and identified that it can be mitigated through additional testing and procedures."

He added that the Rocket Lab team is immensely grateful for the continued support of our customers and the FAA as the company worked meticulously through the flight investigation. "It's a testament to Electron's track record of reliability that the FAA has approved us for return to flight already. Electron was the 4th most frequently launched rocket in the world last year and prior to the anomaly we had deployed 53 customer payloads to orbit without fail. Returning to the pad with an even more reliable vehicle for our mission partners is our top priority."

Rocket Lab is now set to return to the pad in August to launch a dedicated mission from Launch Complex 1 Pad A on New Zealand's Māhia Peninsula. Specific details of the launch window and customer will be provided in the coming days.
